Really good video. One thing though. You don't need to use heat to remove the battery. At the top of the battery where the little slits are is actually a pull tab to remove the battery adhesive.
Suction cup is definitely a good idea it would seem. Other teardowns don't use it. Somehow they cram a pry tool in between the glass and the frame. When I tried that, it scratches the frame.
@@rkgsd Good question. I know Apple shops use special machines with suction cups on the older ones. But those phones are easier to get under the screen.
@@PBKreviews I can confirm the suction cup pulled the screen up just enough to slip in a playing card! I'm surprised you're the only one using suction in the other Pixel teardown videos. Thanks
Tabish Syed I think it's actually a well built phone, replacing the screen isn't too hard, after heating it up and prying it off your able to remove just two screws and you can replace the screen but getting further into the phone gets bit more hard. The mid frame is built well so holds the phone together pretty well and is much harder than most phones to try and separate from the rest of the housing. Once inside, the layout is done well and not cluttered. I'd say it should be a well lasting phone.
I'm not sure exact temp, but would be best to use a hair dryer since there is less chance of damaging anything by overheating it. General rule of thumb, just heat it up so its hot to the touch but not burning hot. You can always apply more heat as needed while your working your way around prying it off.
No, but its fragile you can damage it easily from what I have herd. It didn't seem too fragile when I took it apart. If you apply too much heat you can cause the glass to separate from the screen or cause the glass to shatter.
If I'm not mistaken its held on with adhesive. So you would need to heat it and pry it off but not sure if the parts are available to purchase yet. Best bet would be ebay or to contact htc/google for repairs.
Thanks! I guess I'll wait for a while before doing anything and see if they stock some parts on ebay. Should be easy enough to replace if only held on with adhesive.
Thanks, usually they sell housings for phones with all the small pieces installed like charger port, buttons etc that's left after you remove the main board. Its always easiest to purchase one of those to install instead of a bare skin housing but if you were to do bare skin, all thats left is the battery to remove, charger port and any buttons or connection points you would just need to swap over from the old to the new housing. Since most replaceable housings usually come with the minor stuff installed I didn't go too into detail on how to replace the rest of the pieces.
You can fit a thin flat metal tool from any area on the bottom to lift it out. You basically have to wedge a tool in between the midplate and the frame of the phone.
amazing video thanks! question: i dropped the phone and now the speaker and charger doesn't work but if i flex (bend) the phone diagonally it does work again but needs to be flexed to work or it stops working. what do you think got damaged. it has to do with connection and the speaker and charger port is both affected. thanks
Thanks, it's an old vid and quality isn't that great compared to my videos now lol. But it's possible the flex cable connecting the sub board/charger port to the main board has become disconnected or loose causing that issue. You would need to take it apart and inspect and make sure all the cables are properly connected.
well i had everything working but all of a sudden its not turning on at all. i noticed when i opened it up that the white cable you showed to plug in, the part that plugs in was detached from the rest but still attached to the white cable... any idea how i can get that back on
Hi, well the connector would be to connect the flex cable to the main board, and the tan colored one connects the charger port and loud speaker assembly to the main board giving it connection. So if it broke off only way to fix it would be to re-solder it back on by a professional if even possible.
We put the same screen back on. Ya I don't see why not, as long as your screen is not broken you should be able to use it. Always best to add new adhesive but if your adhesive still holds you can use it as is.
Yea find one that's meant for smartphones, always best to ask the seller that you want a strong quality one. There are many out there that don't hold well.
I wouldn't advise it either, but in the last 14 years, I have never had any issues or damage caused using metal even though it can possibly short something out. So best not to use it if possible. But if you have the battery disconnected, you should be fine :)
oh sucks, ebay already has a screen for sale from Hong Kong, here is the link if you need : www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Google-Pixel-XL-Nexus-M1-LCD-Display-Touch-Screen-Digitizer-Glass-Assembly-/282230830463?hash=item41b644b57f:g:kZUAAOSwal5YDbFS
As we can see from the video, screen panel easily can have the bigger display to completely eliminate any fucking bezels !!! So HTC and Google have no excuses for their bad work. HTC and Google made a very poor job with that pixel phones.
You are definitely one of the first few to teardown the Google Pixel phone!
James Chang Thank you!
Thank you for the tear down. I have the XL coming on Monday so is nice to see this. Thank you again for your time and sharing of this :)
Anytime, glad to be able to do it :)
Really good video. One thing though. You don't need to use heat to remove the battery. At the top of the battery where the little slits are is actually a pull tab to remove the battery adhesive.
Thanks for the heads up. Didn't pay attention to that.
You're welcome and subbed :) Love the channel
:) thanks I appreciate it!
interesting
Suction cup is definitely a good idea it would seem. Other teardowns don't use it. Somehow they cram a pry tool in between the glass and the frame. When I tried that, it scratches the frame.
yea in most cases suction cups come in handy

Do you have to remove all that you removed just to replace the battery in the future?
What are your overall thoughts on the build quality ?
Tabish Syed I think it's actually a well built phone, replacing the screen isn't too hard, after heating it up and prying it off your able to remove just two screws and you can replace the screen but getting further into the phone gets bit more hard. Left out the most important part. Does it still work afterwards?
Yes worked, now a days on my more recent videos I show the phones powering on and so forth after the re assembly.
Bro, what temperature and power of air did we use in the gun so that it came out easily?
I'm not sure exact temp, but would be best to use a hair dryer since there is less chance of damaging anything by overheating it. General rule of thumb, just heat it up so its hot to the touch but not burning hot. You can always apply more heat as needed while your working your way around prying it off.
did you damage your screen as you removed it? Or does the screen get automatically damaged?
No, but its fragile you can damage it easily from what I have herd. It didn't seem too fragile when I took it apart. If you apply too much heat you can cause the glass to separate from the screen or cause the glass to shatter.
十分感谢你的视频,正好我准备更换电池!
hiya, awesome video! Do you know how I can replace the rear glass and where I can buy replacement possibly (mine shattered =/)?
If I'm not mistaken its held on with adhesive. So you would need to heat it and pry it off but not sure if the parts are available to purchase yet. Best bet would be ebay or to contact htc/google for repairs.

Nice video. But what is the procedure if I had wish to change a whole housing ?

this "area" on the bottom left, I'm struggling to see anywhere I can put a tool, can you elaborate please
You can fit a thin flat metal tool from any area on the bottom to lift it out. You basically have to wedge a tool in between the midplate and the frame of the phone.
Do you know if the internals on the regular and XL are the same?
Honestly I am not sure, they look very similar in this model but I can't be 100% sure unless I had both side by side to compare.
Was this your first teardown? You appear to know your way around it very well.
Ya

Thanks for your thoroughness, makes me feel much more comfortable with opening up my phone.
no problem
well i had everything working but all of a sudden its not turning on at all. i noticed when i opened it up that the white cable you showed to plug in, the part that plugs in was detached from the rest but still attached to the white cable... any idea how i can get that back on
Do you mean the connector broke off the board?
@@PBKreviews yes do you happen to know what it is for ?
Well the phone is working again but the in call volume is 0
Hi, well the connector would be to connect the flex cable to the main board, and the tan colored one connects the charger port and loud speaker assembly to the main board giving it connection. So if it broke off only way to fix it would be to re-solder it back on by a professional if even possible.
Great job. Thank you for such a straightforward presentation
Thank you and your welcome!
Did you fit a new screen? I am planning on reusing my old screen, is that possible?
REPLY
We put the same screen back on. Ya I don't see why not, as long as your screen is not broken you should be able to use it. Always best to add new adhesive but if your adhesive still holds you can use it as is.
pwrdbykyank yes, screen is still good. What's the best adhesive to get? I was thinking double sided 3M tape
Yea find one that's meant for smartphones, always best to ask the seller that you want a strong quality one. There are many out there that don't hold well.
Can I replacement the back glass only?
yes. you do not even need to take apart the phone to do that.
Hello where to buy motherboard
Not sure you would need to probably check ebay or somewhere or find a phone which has a broken screen or something else and take the board from it.
who í fixed the microphone?
that screen looks super easy to replace
Yea the screen is fairly easy, the rest is a bit more hard but not too complicated. :)
pwrdbykyank i have changed the screen. but the new screen doesn't stick to the device. is there any recommended glue?
I've heard the XL construction described in as cheap-looking and cheap-feeling for a flagship product. Your thoughts?
So there's absolutely no reason for that big ass bottom chin, except to copy Apple, just like I thought!
Willie D. Washington perhaps for balance.
the question is where to buy motherboard cheap and its difficult to open :::c not
so hard to open i cracked the glass somehow with the guitar pick xD
:(. sometimes if you apply to much heat it causes the glass to get brittle and break easier.
very easy phone to repair
Yea the screen portion is fairly easy, but the rest of the phone was a bit more complicated and took some more time.
I absolutely love everything about the Pixel except for the screen burn issues. It pisses me off more than anything.
ya screen burn is pretty annoying
OMG! Metal tweezers????
I wouldn't advise it either, but in the last 14 years, I have never had any issues or damage caused using metal even though it can possibly short something out. So best not to use it if possible. But if you have the battery disconnected, you should be fine :)
Sir help me please
What do you need help with?
I sell you google pixel do you want?
Thanks, but don't need it.
smashed my screen on second day of having it ... 700quid
