    you're right. I've always believed for the most part, that humour is only as funny as the character themselves is real. A realistic character doing something comedic and realistic = funny, a realistic/unrealistic character doing something out of character/out of place just for humorous effect is awkward and uncomfortable and most importantly, falls flat almost 0 if not EVERY time

    i think this is where a lot of horror movies fail, where they'll use a jump scare to get a cheap reaction, but the result, some would argue, is it takes away all the suspenseful tension you've been building up. to me, i have to wonder if a little levity will relieve a little anxiety while still keeping the tension high.
    for me, the best comedy and comic relief comes from the characterization, not the jokes. that's just my preference, of course, but something to mull over, eh? character-based humor adds to the character on a deeper, more satisfying level, imo, whereas almost any character can deliver a one-liner.
    some movies are in such desperate need of just a hint of humor that anything a character says slightly off-beat is grounds for hilarity. even in straight up dramas, writers can forget that there's funny/humorous shit in real life.

    • @TylerMowery
      @TylerMowery  7 лет назад +7

      +ryan barker really good thoughts. Yea you're right humor should come naturally from the characters as much as possible. I think one liners can sometimes pull the audience out of the story depending on the character. And yea. Horror movies like The Shining are on another level because they don't constantly go for cheap jump scares

    A good to the point video.
    I think using humor in a movie (and book) is a dangerous thing to do. That is when it is done with the intention of being funny. Not everyone has the same humor after all.
    Comic relieves I personally rarely find funny, not even in my personal favorite movies.
    If you want to add humor, create a safety net. And with that I mean make the joke only funny if it is catched up by the viewer, and make it just a line in the movie if the viewer doesn't find it funny. That way it simply can't fail.

    • @eliben4066
      @eliben4066 3 года назад +3

      @@thumper8684 In my opinion, comedy shouldn’t be a main genre anymore, but more of a classification.
      The best comedies I’ve seen can be classified in another bigger genre, like Shaun of the Dead being horror, Guardians of the Galaxy being superhero and Kingsman being action. Some of the funniest movies I’ve seen aren’t even comedies, like Back to the Future. All those movies have a strong enough story to catch the jokes that fall flat, and they’re only comedies because of the high density of humor.
      Movies that rely on the humor, aka comedies, usually don’t have that “safety net”, so when the jokes fall flat, it’s noticeable and comes off as cringey. I know a lot of comedies that have a good story, but they usually take a break from all the humor, to leave some space for the emotional moments, like Click, but most comedies don’t do that, so they don’t provide a satisfying experience, instead makes us feel like we watched a feature length RUclips skit

      Misconcecption. A comic relief is a scenic devise, not a character (or so it should be). Thus, Gimli might deliver one (or several) of the greatest comic reliefs, but he cannot be one himself. That would make a bad character, like Jar Jar.

    Dr. Strange was about ancient sorcery and magic in an intercultural modern secret society that has enclaves all over the Earth, with both ubiquitous teleportation and internet access. And even the ancient sorcery and magic is shown as needing to change to meet the times, with "moving on with your life" and "letting go of the past" being major recurring themes in the story.
    And it takes place in the broader MCU, where you have pop culture references from the 70s on out the ass from characters like Star Lord, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Falcon, Ant-Man, and Jane Foster's research assistant, as well as a running gag of Captain America having to bone up on modern pop culture, because that's the society the movies take place in.
    The time period that the movies take place in is really, really, REALLY central to not just the humor of the films, but the stories themselves. It'd be weird for Legolas to Rick Roll someone, but a brilliant American surgeon who memorizes Billboard Charts referencing a modern-era singer who he says is popular and a modern-era, multi-lingual magical researcher/librarian, who also happens to be a monk in an ancient order, looking up and enjoying said singer on the wifi they explicitly have is a pretty great way to showcase the difference between appearance and reality (see also: the scene where Strange meets the Ancient One).

      +lnsflare1 very good rebuttal. I see your point. I think the biggest thing is whether or not a joke brings the audience out of a film. If a five second throwaway meta-gag like that could ruin an entire film for you, I can only hope you never watch Deadpool because you are likely to have some sort of stroke within the first fifteen minutes.
      Somewhat OT, but I just remembered that the Beyonce bit was a subjoke whose punchline was a preamble to the sight gag of Strange grabbing books through portals behind Wong's back; the actual setup in that scene was that Wong wasn't reacting to any of his quips, with a further setup scene being when Strange complained to Wong and Mordu that the warnings should have been at the front of magical spells rather than the end later on, and the actual punchline being Wong cracking up when Strange damned the guys who had previously killed him to eternally suffer the wrath of the cosmic horror that had empowered them and commented that the warnings on the spell they used should have really been at the beginning of the spell.
      Which is in itself entwined with another joke where the setup was that the second scene was caused because Wong and Mordu very seriously explained to him that the time magic that he was doing could have had cosmically disastrous consequences, and the punchline being that Wong encouraging him to keep screwing around with time in the end sequence when Strange was expecting to be chided for violating the natural order again, which cycled back to drama when that willingness to violate the natural order was what caused Mordu to defect from them at the end.
      Jokeception.

    Great video, Tyler. I wonder if this has helped you to try and include jokes successfully in your future scripts.
    I haven't seen Doctor Strange, but even I could tell that joke didn't really fit the character/setting. As far as relevance goes in films, I think a filmmaker has to decide if he's reaching for relevance in the present or timelessness. I don't think one is necessarily better than the other (although I personally lean more towards timelessness). I often think about this decision when a film has a lot of technology involved. I don't like when a movie shows someone's phone constantly or when characters make references to shows and celebrities. It's going to date the film tremendously and it won't have the same effect 20 years from now. But isn't that okay? I still watch Saved by the Bell and I am not really that hindered by their brick antenna phones. I think both can coexist together and I can enjoy both of them.
    Yet your point is still a good one. Jokes that are completely contained within the film are of better quality (in my opinion). Yet, even they may not last a long time. Culture often changes and the things that we used to laugh at in the 1920s are not quite as humorous to us now.
    Looking forward to your new video.

    That Beyoncé line wasn't just a setup, it in itself was a punchline to the setup of other single name singers, which are references completely in character for Strange as established in the very first scene of the film. The follow-up punchline was funny thanks to it's juxtapositioning. Had it taken longer for the payoff, the joke would have fallen flat. That you didn't find it funny doesn't mean it's a bad joke.
