They don't come along very often, but Joe is a TRUE 'living legend'. Even with his status and fame he seems just like a regular down-to-earth guy. I've been listening to his music for over thirty years, and he still manages to keep coming out with music that sounds 'fresh'. It's amazing. ROCK ON, JOE!!!!!!
I've met him a couple of times, and he's just like this interview. Even nice guys can have off days, where they don't feel like being nice to people. I know I certainly have. Does that make them an asshole? I don't think so. People often forget that celebrities, no matter what level of fame - are human.
Most are smart enough not to go into debt. We get to hear this story because Joe got the lucky call and in the end a record company did solve all his problems. Very inspiring. /s
hate to disagree Paul, this guy was never an ordinary musician !! Of course his story by the laws of natural law plus he's natural talent for the instrument led him on the path to illumination and success, many musicians get lost in their own fears, egos and distractions. When I bought surfing with the Alien back in 95 or 96 at local store here in NY, I just couldn't believe my ears. thanks to guitar professor of mine. I knew right away this was something above the rest.
Iron Maiden were THIS close to being out of business before they got a record deal...somehow they had accumulated £50,000 of debt that they didn't have a hope in hell of paying off until EMI took them on.
As a teen, "Surfing with the Alien" was an instrumental album (cassette) that I had on "replay" in my 1979 Chrysler Cordoba's Alpine stereo with Infinity speakers for weeks on end. It gave me a new perspective on guitar and made me think my car was cool.
I ran one of the clubs that Joe played in San Francisco, The Palms Cafe. One evening in the early summer of 1980, The Squares were booked, but I was unable to be there when the show started. Coming in late, while the band was deep into their set, I rounded the corner, heading for the door down to my office when Joe took a solo. At the first phrase, I was stopped dead in my tracks. The sound, the tone, the execution, all were sheer perfection. I've heard most of the great bands of my era, many of them in live concert, but Joe's performance that night on that song on my stage, was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had listing to live music. Hello, Joe, from across the vast expanse of space and time. All the best.
I got an autograph from Joe back in the early 90s when I worked for Walgreens on California and Spruce Street. I helped him find an item and then asked him for a quick autograph. He is a very kind person. By then I already owned his EP-Dreaming#11 which I bought in 1988 containing my favorite song The Crush of Love. Yes, I still have his autograph.
Brilliant when he talks about seeing who he can be and who he thought he was. It's great to listen to guys like Satch, or Gilmore and people like that who are very intelligent and equally articulate. What a breath of fresh air! And very inspiring....natch!
Thomas Elliott yup Randy Rhoads was ahead of his time at that time. Would have definitely been one of the greatest guitar player's today, I think he still is till this day
I've seen Joe three times back in early90,s flying in a blue dream tour ,G_3 ,and last yr at the university of Buffalo, blew me away all three times, phenomenal guitarist and person.
I love Joe been listening to him since my birth in a car 1988 BEST THING THAT MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY LOVING GUITAR AND BEING SOMEWHAT CONSISTENT BUT IM DISTRAUGHT WITH MADNESS AND I NEED HELP
🤘that WE DO.... a bit brief and short of intensity SO I WILL COMPENSATE WITH FREQUENCY!📈📉 Joe is another factor making it a great time to be alive. Then there's SOME THINGS make me ashamed to be a human, unlike Joe's and other greats' contribution via expression, mostly music.. little lyric/vocals. Not this- I WOULDN'T KNOW HOW TO CRANK UP THE VOLUME FOR ROCK N ROLL!
The coolest guy in the music business. It seems. I stood next to him for a picture and the person taking the picture cut my head out of the picture. That was such a high light in my life. A man with so much creativity. Truly amazing talent. Thanks for letting me take a picture with you Joe.
I'm small fry from Cincinnati, OH and I have great respect and admiration for Mr Joe Satriani. Just goes to show you don't need the great powers to be greatly powerful! Thanks Joe!
Joe is still and always will be my go to road trip artist...If I tell you I'm driving from NY to Maine...Joe Satriani, The Complete Studio Recordings will be in my player.
You have took this ridiculously off topic, all you have done is insult me...? like I actually don't understand why you are doing this. If your doing this just to troll me, it hasn't worked. Writing an essay insulting me is pretty hilarious and sad, it would make sense if you are actually in your teens, but if you are an adult that's even worse. Whats even worse is I'm actually 17 and still replying to you. I'm not one for insults usually, but just a fuck you is just fine, no need to get all weird. P.S If you need a friend, lemme know because I'm here for you.
:-) Silly boy, we're only having fun here. This is just a laugh, that's all. Don't take it too seriously petal. What are you boozers like, all bloated opinion, that you simply MUST share with the world, and then all popped bloon, as your ego deflates in defeat. YOU started this by telling me what to do! And now you're squealing like a stuck pig. You know your looking pretty bad here right? I'm just being kind dude. Cont. . .

The man is a musical freak! I mean that with complete respect. His understanding of music theory and the application just makes my head hurt. When he explains something on a video, it's still over my head.
I saw Joe 2nd row in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on his last club tour. It was the most amazing display of guitar virtuosity I have ever seen in my entire life. Absolutely amazing. Sadly, I always worry about his health because he never looks like he's healthy. Is it the lack of hair or the lack of tan? God, he's a damn genius, though.
Jwestcott5000 I've been following Satch since I was about 12-13 and I'm 31 now and I have no idea what you're referring too. He's always looked and seemed very healthy at any point in time I've seen. Full of life, energy, passion and he always exudes a lot of love and happiness. I know he cut his hair so it's not like it fell out or something lol he's not pale either so idk I don't see it. I mean I know he's white too so I don't expect to see a tan either. Different perspectives I guess. However I can see aging in his eyes and skin etc. a[though he still looks good for his age but after watching some old footage right before watching this, it's really apparent that he's aged quite a bit! Can you elaborate and/or refer me to some footage, examples???

This is how it went down for Joe Satriani, seriously? I grew up in a tradition of musical support and excellence but I never dreamed this is how it was for Joe freaking Satriani. Wow, what a beast. So sorry he had to even deal with this sort of shit.
It was a learning curve, the Squares were doing great, fucking rocked, and folks were like " yeah, but..." Joe was just out beyond where anybody's imagination was at that time. I sure felt bad for Joe when I heard he was toiling for Greg Kihn. I didn't know it was working for his master plan, everyone I knew kinda quit seeing the GKB right about the time Dave Carpender left. Darkest before the dawn I reckon.
I first heard Joe Satriani on a demo disc issued with the UK 'Guitar' Magazine back around 95' , I was blown away it was great ! Surfing I think ......

It's official: Joe Satriani is the nicest guy in the world.
+Lesia44 Yeah, very polite.
I concur
+Lesia44 Check out interviews with Brian May. He's an example of British politeness.
I had no ideal about Joe wow guy is just as humble intelligent great human being. A true asset representation to the music industry for sure...

haha soon as I heard the interviewer, whoa, I laughed out loud
Is he being interviewed by Bill or Ted?
I know that you won't see this, Mr. Satriani but when I discovered your music, it made me cry. From appreciation of your genius.
great guy, so utterly down to earth and real.
This is the story of many many musicians, but with a different ending
Most are smart enough not to go into debt. We get to hear this story because Joe got the lucky call and in the end a record company did solve all his problems. Very inspiring. /s
Jim Bordner well that's depressing.

Ray Staar satriani fan .wow. I mean. I was just 13 years old in 1980. That was such a long time ago.
So you missed Bad Attitude's set? They were pretty solid that night as well.
The guy saying wow over and over really killed this for me
Scott Hester wow same for me
Wow
Such a musical genius. Sad that so many people like him has to go through such struggles. Hope he stays healthy and things work out better for him.

There's so many other planets that that's not really saying much.
These comments on this video are so funny - Captain Sunday you made my day :)
Lol imagine him playing on Mars.
Captain Sunday - I know. Which planet?
I like that thing he does when he plays really fast.
Great human being, down to earth guy. Met him in Detroit 1000 years ago.
Joe Satch, a great musician, a great entrepreneur, my mentor... it will be hard for me to see him leaving this world.
