get real. LA Dodgers are a floor mat, they've won only 1 WS in a normal 162 game season in last 57 years (1988)... lol (SF won 3 in 5 year span a few yrs ago...)
As a Dodgers fan at first I was worried about the contract for multiple reasons. 1. 700 million for one player? 2. In 10 years 68 million a year must be paid to a player no longer on the team? But now that I have learned how the league deferral system works I think the Dodgers got a 100 million dollar discount. Turns out the Dodgers are registering his deferrals with the league so that he only cost 46 million a year against the luxury tax. They aren’t allowed to just wait 10 years to start paying him. They must give 46 million to the league at the end of each season. And the league puts the 46 million in a league approved savings fund at 4.5% interest. And in 10 years they pull the 46 million out plus the 22 million in interest and give the 68 million to Ohtani. So basically the Dodgers just give 46 million a year rather than 70 million a year to Ohtani (had they not done deferrals) Which means the Dodgers will pay 10 years 460 million for him NOT 10 years 700 million. That is a very good deal.

To be honest, $700 million payable over the next 30 years in annual (or monthly) installment should be worth no more than $350 million on a present value basis, depending on the discount rate. He receives only 3% down payment in the first year. It was actually an extraordinarily advantageous contract for the Dodgers thanks to Ohtani's magnanimity. He just wanted to play in a team with serious prospect of winning the championship. This arrangement is simply meant to avoid collapsing the current MLB players market by the publicity of "$700 million the biggest pay in MLB history", while minimising the Dodgers' financial burden so that the team can afford the fund to keep paying good salary to the existing team members (and to attract good players from the outside).
