From the clarity of the phrasing to his grasp of the overall architecture of this wild allegro, Kocsis is up there with the greatest masters of this sonata's first movement ever captured live or in a studio with excellent sound. He had an instinctive grasp of Beethoven from his youth - it is a loss for music that he didn't play and record more Beethoven, early, middle and late period works. From the f minor, Op.2/1 & c minor Op.10/1 that he recorded early on, to Op.111 seen and heard here, he had the requisite pulse in his blood - and the necessary febrile technique to realize demanding scores with astonishing brilliance. His gift was refined and at the same time visceral. I also deeply admire his d minor Op.31/2 as being very near the summit of the finest recordings it has received. What a pity we had no Op.110 from him, to say nothing of an Op.106. His loss remains acute; he was a great musician whose Beethoven will endure.
Le sans faute absolu. dynamique, musicalité, sensibilité, tempi, puissance: Tout y est. Sans vouloir être "définitif", je partage l'opinion de MrCapacitors. Maintenant passons à l'Arietta...
One of the very best of all time. His early Beethoven recordings are stupendous.
