You regard his response as being "Kind, but also wise" I'm speculating - because you agree with his position. OF COURSE someone you agree with is someone you would regard as Kind, but also wise. The fact is...what he's implicitly suborning is that "the media" should still be accorded license to engage in their "profession" in ways that can be potentially unprofessionally, even inhumanely. There are A LOT of sports reporters...reporters of any stripe, for that matter...who don't do anything to propel the dissemination of sports information in any way that could remotely be regarded as authentically invested in outlaying such information to inform the public. I'm not suggesting that athletes should not have to answer questions posed to them by media types...but some media types are only media types because so much of the public equates behaving like jackals as conducting oneself as a responsible media reporter. The question as to why Osaka withdrew from the tournament is, in such context, almost irrelevant...the fact is that under no circumstance should anyone be compelled to contend with a prodigious faction within the media that trades on exploitative journalism, at the athletes' expense, where the clear agenda is the reporter(s) endeavoring to make their bones...and that happens entirely too frequently.

@@the___truth8038 It IS pretty much required for all sports. But because tennis is an individual sport the athletes are under the microscope much more than a second string football player on a huge team (for example), ya feel?
Mike Greenberg addressed that issue. In the 50s - 90s yes media was necessary to generate interest in sports but in the modern social media world that is so no longer the truth. "Without them, there is no promotion of the sport and there would not be any funding in the first place" - this statement is now false. Athletes themselves have millions of follower that they can reach directly. When was the last time you actually read a sports news article? I totally agree w/your the assessment of the GREAT Rafael Nadal question response. He summed up the fact regarding this matter concerning Osaka's trying 2 reserve her emotional health while under pressure sporting. @ the same time as Rafael so eloquently relayed the sports fans & players do need the reporting of the games via reporters. I understand that Osaka along w/other players do get annoyed when they have reporters that are perhaps racist or looking 2 get under the skin of the players. I believe that is why Osaka is reluctant 2 leave herself vulnerable in their presence. Osaka clearly is a private & shy woman who just wants 2 play the sport w/out the BS!!! Or perhaps the probing of the player's personal business is invasive & that is very disturbing 2 private players' position.

Tennis is a very specific sport. First of all... they are nice (the players) but I think Tennis gets boring if all are acting the same. But thats another story. Tennis is a Solo-Player game mostly. Its very different than football for example. Where a whole team has to fight. If a tennis player plays bad, he knows it and he loses the match directly. So there is not much room for accusations and debate about a players perfromance, so its much easier for the sportsman to deal with fans and the press. There is simply no moment of lots of contraversions. You dont need to respond to another 10 players why you played bad and you dont need to respond to your trainer or even manager or whatever. Tennis is a very single oriented sport. You are practically alyways your own boss and you only have to responds to yourself. That makes it a lot easier than many other sports, when it comes to deal with the media.. your fans or your managment. For example.. in Tennis the players get their OWN trainers that THEY hire and not vice versa.. where the trainer decides who can play. This all makes it much esier to stay calm and relaxed, thats what I wanted to say.
Rafa continues to display proper sportsmanship and maturity: both of which are rare in the top-tier athlete world. I hope Osaka can gain some positive vibes from him.

NAdal has never gone thru wat Osaka has on the court. Serena blowout in her first slam win. Us open final. Then her statements at past us open. Osaka is a great example of racial justice. Funny. The usta could have supported her but she didn’t fit the white mold. She doesnt fit any mold. Which is needed in this super raciest super elitist sport. Country club sports need a superior person. Not another carbon copy. I’m sick of watching deadbeat journalists. They send rookies reporters to tennis events. They play 7 matches. Every other day. Media is biased toward which country they rep. And don’t give me the professional excuse. She brings all of Asia with her and they only watch bc of her in Japan. She makes them added revenue and then cries bc the tournament federation or directors can’t make more free money on her. And u defend the rich federations point of view. Wow. Ever had anything mentally disturbed u. I have. It’s hard to focus when ur thinking bout other ish. Please with ur American bias. Do u Naomi. The Asians will always back u. Why is no one noticing the problem at home with Covid and the Olympics.
The only really Asia is backing her now is because she was winning. Most of Asia dont have consideration for blasians outside of claiming it for sport and entertainment cred let’s be real. The Williams sisters have gone through a lot more and have done more for providing visibility to this sport outside of the elite circles than Naomi ever has. The trouble with this generation is people want to make heroes and champions of people prematurely. The amount of press Naomi has gotten since she won a game against Serena isn’t the picture of someone who is “oppressed”. This is a clear case of opportunism and people trying to make her some e Justice warrior which she never asked for. Rafa breathes a heavy sigh when he goes into these press conferences. He's clearly as bored as hell but gets on with it as his duty. He has lost it with the media on occasion but it is rare. The sport must be promoted and sensationalised or it dies, but maybe these conferences could be reduced. After every match is a bit much. Often players have little more to say than already said in the on court interview.
i agree. A slightly longer on court interview could basically eradicate the need for a press conference at least in the group stage games or whatever. Obviously, QF onwards, you actually want the press conferences to get as much info on the players, their mentality, etc. I think hers is a special case though because she's not dealing with any outright shitty questions or any racist/sexist ones. She's struggling with her OWN anxiety, depression and insecurities. She made the conscious decision to withdraw from RG so that she could really address her issues which is smart of her - not only because she needs to heal - but because, I think she knows that she will have to start doing press interviews since they r too integrated in the sport & financial prospects for players. She needs to overcome her own personal barriers n insecurities and she will be fine.
Time and time again we see this happening, there's a huge campaign about mental health awareness, all the big brands jump behind it and all that, but do they really believe in it? will they put their money where their mouth is? because this happens to be the first opportunity we have to put the stuff we've learnt from those 'campaigns' to work, what is everyone doing instead? they are berating Naomi and asking why she's crying for help, rather than commending her for being brave and coming out publicly to declare that she's not ok mentally. It's not as if she hasn't been doing interviews, she didn't say she was going to stop doing interviews altogether, all she's asking for is help with whatever she's going through right now and to those of you who criticize her, you're just like that friend who will say 'please man up' depression is for wimps. toughen up and crack on with it. Then if it leads to God forbid a fatality, the whole mental health 'campaign' intensifies again and the cycle begins, except that no one actually puts things learned into practice, it's all bullshit. Goodluck to you Mr Rafael Nadal, you're very tough and are able to cope better than Naomi, but for goodness sake, put yourself in someone else's shoes sometimes and show some support, you never know what's round the corner.
Exactly, the guy was put on the spot in front of the press, who were pushing him for an answer on a highly emotive subject. And on top of that he was speaking in his second language. He was under a lot of pressure, so who are we to judge his answer. Maybe on another day under different circumstances he might have said something else, but it's tough to think of the perfect answer on the spot in your second language. I know that I would struggle with that, and he is under a lot more pressure and scrutiny than me. We never know what people are going through, so I'm going to cut him some slack.
When being questioned buy the press ALL are allowed to say “No comment. Next question”. If they continue with the same question, it’s “If there aren’t any other questions, thank you and au revoir”. Done. Leave the studio.

Absolutely spot on. The media have their flaws but without them players like Osaka, Nadal, Djokovic, Federer would not be the stars they are today. The journalists have an obligation to their respective companies to ask questions - sometimes tough ones - in order to generate interest in the sport and bring listeners/readers/watchers to their channel.
Everyone is overlooking the fact that she has done interviews in the past. Right now she is going through something and fans of tennis need to be more understanding. This is a tough environment and everyone is wanting something from her.
When medias want her to show his love for USA, each time they are upset whenever she says she's half Japanese and half Haitian. When Nadal says he understands her, he understand that Sports People are not facing the same level of challenge and pressure from Medias. Nadal knows he's a privileged sports man compared to Naomi in the system. And we all know and feel that. Let us not ignore that.
Naomi obviously needs time to get used to the extra pressure of the media spotlight....and that's ok by me. She's done enough and said enough to show us her impressive talent, commitment and personality. Respect her and, for now, let her tennis speak for itself.
Rafa is so lovable...he not only tries to be respectful of other players, but other people in general. You can sense his kindness. I really don’t think Naomi owes anyone anything, she needs to take care of her mental health first.
Nope . She does owe the people who are going to pay her if she wins . When she participates , she has a responsibility . If she cant follow through with her commitments , dont do the job . Easy . Simple . If you are a policeman , and you feel stressed about going out into the field , will you allow him to continue ? No he will be asked to work on his health . But not allowed to continue . So i agree with you on your line "she needs to take care of her health" . But assuming that she could do what she wants when she was going to go through a tournament where she was well aware that she had media responsibilities , while suffering from mental health (and i am sorry to say it ..but there are an abundance of people who are throwing it around without any substance to it) smacks of downright arrogance and pride . Lets not go with all the "she felt had a responsibility"

"Without them, there is no promotion of the sport and there would not be any funding in the first place" - this statement is now false.

We never know what struggles a person is going through...just leave it at that...pretty simple.
The questions are not necessarily the problem. It's personality (introverted) and the social anxiety that comes with being in the spotlight
It is more the amount of people and questions for her. She literally had to be trained. People told her her mouth barely moves. She just needs to figure out what is best for her.

That was a fuckin quality response. This guy was already my favorite and this is a real person with awareness. Much respect Rafa

Legend of the game.
Something that Osaka will never be.
But she has already won 4 GS on the greatest tennis stages of the world. Definitely on her way to a "tennis legend" status.
@@vladiinsky champion maybe... legend never. You have to have the whole package in order to become legend.

@@joaofernandes2827 we all suffer from anxiety and depression in todays fast paced information world.
@@dave-zm5vx what? Social Anxiety Disorder and Clinical Depression aren't things 'we all suffer from'. It's like telling someone with Dementia that we're all a bit forgetful.
I thought Naomi said Serena was her idol and tennis mom. Well, no player has endured more nonsense from the press than Serena. She's had to take questions after crushing defeats, on-court meltdowns. I don't recall Serena issuing a blanket I'm not talking to press the entire tournament.
I have understood why people do this to others. Because someone else is like this I should be too. They are two different people and maybe Naomi skin isn't as thick.
You can't ignore this great Guy..
My God! His expressions 🙈😂
Truth be told, Osaka has always been treated very politely and respectfully by the media - even more so because journalists take into account her shyness and senstive nature. I doubt there are any other tennis players of her caliber who have been treated as leniently as she has been. And to think that SHE refused to give post-match press conferences is totally mind-boggling to me.
Such an awesome human being! And an amazing athlete. ❤
Of course, Naomi didn’t say it wasn’t an important part. And May I point out that each time a French Federation official made a statement to the press about Naomi’s decision; each of them refused to take questions from the press.
Perhaps we might take a moment to ponder THEIR reasoning…?
Exactly.
Roger, we have missed you. So G R E A T to have you back.

Typical media trying to make the situation worst by asking Nadal to comment on a decision of another athlete, expecting him to spit on Naomi Osaka and putting him in a very uncomfortable situation. Disgusting.

Rafa, always such a gentleman ❤️
Adversity builds character but these days some think when you face adversity you should build a bubble or cancel it lol. Soft as hot butter generation.
Naomi felt harmed by the press conferences and so she chose to not participate in them. Doing what was best for her was not soft, it’s the opposite. Why should she have to suffer from something that she isn’t even there to do
@@stephanie-zq9sz She is an athlete like everyone else. You have to face your losses. If you can’t face up to your failures, you have no right to celebrate when you win.
I think naomi is a bit ‘woke’.
@@tberry79 it’s not really about facing her failures though, more so the unnecessary negativity that the press brings to the athletes
@@stephanie-zq9sz I know that sometimes when we lose we just want to lock ourselves away and be alone but uncomfortable as they may be post-match press conferences are part and parcel of professional sports today. Indeed being able to graciously handle defeat and the subsequent press grilling can do even more for a player’s image than winning can. Running away won’t.
damn I love this guy, he's so honest and real and true
Notice his new face, nose, jaws and eyes. I didn’t recognise him when I saw him on the screen.
The only way for Noami to overcome her anxiety is to be upfront about how she felt when Serena Williams pulled that ugly temper tantrum fiasco at the 2018 US Open and how the media was biased. Once she makes firm remarks about it, it will give her closure.
Very balanced, and truly objective response by Nadal!
