I hadn't really even noticed that a lot of my favorite indie films in the past few years were all distributed by a24
This is the video I never knew I needed until now. A24 is revolutionary in our blockbuster driven film industry. They’re definitely making history by creating some of the best movies of our times (also I can totally see you either producing or directing an A24 feature film in the future!)
I like how A24 doesn’t dumb things down to their audience. Every other movie either has to show the entire movie in the trailer so that the audience knows what they’re getting or they’ll have too much expositional dialogue almost to check that we’ve been listening. Thank you for letting us use our brains A24!
A24, and similar art, reminds me of that T-shirt: "There are two types of people in the world: 1) Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data". A24 is for the first group.
I'm in love with A24, it's come to the point where if I see the logo in the trailer, I'm in. -- I've never really been the "indie movie" type, especially being POC I found them hard to relate to. I think A24 really showed me a whole new world of what storytelling could be in movies. Eighth Grade has a special place in my heart, I wasn't expecting it to hit so close to home. I also love that they're starting to tell Asian-American stories like The Farewell (LOVE) and Minari (super excited for that one!) This week (especially yesterday) I’ve been thinking a lot about a24 and the love I have for it, my favorite movie is LadyBird for sooo many reasons so... you read my mind or something.
I’ve watched lady bird 6 times because it’s just so beautiful. It took a unique perspective to poverty and had too many relatable moments or scenes thatve happened in my own life.
I don't see alot of people talking about this A24 movie but it's called Waves and it was honestly so powerful. One of my favs from them along with Moonlight :))))
this video essay is amazing, and i would like to humbly add my 2 cents. i think that there is also something to be said about the "indie" label for a24, as people are generally a lot keener on supporting indie studios than they are major ones. it's quite easy to forget though, that just because a24 is an independent company doesn't mean that they aren't a company, though for some reason the "indie" label seems to imply that they are more ethical/diverse than companies like Disney, and aren't as in it for the profit, though that may not always be the case. just because a company is small doesn't necessarily make it not for profit, but it does definitely work as a way of getting attention from people who tend to buck more traditional movie studios/companies (like me lol). it does make you wonder at what point a24 will get big enough where it won't be considered indie anymore?
I agree .Even when it gets pretty big ...i will call it indie because of the aesthetics, the shots, the storyline, the acting and the hard work that every single person puts in to make the films amazing etc ...no company is really doing it like them so I guess it will a ways be considered indie. Indie just means independent and it’s a independent film company so it will always be called indie.
Also, I'm sure the rates they expect from streaming services are a lot lower than a major studio, while providing a lot of variety that keeps people on the streaming service showing their content.
I found this video very amusing and great; Because it perfectly encapsulates conversations/ideas my sister and I have about this company. I hope the company continues to go in the same direction. Mostly because it's hard to find films that are original or have different perspectives. I also just wanted to say that I like that you talk about a broad array of subjects. :)
I like that she compared James Franco's character from Spring Breakers to Posty, it means the younger generation don't remember Riff Raff and I'm okay with that.
I'm sad you didn't mention The Farewell! It was my favorite movie of 2019, and it was so amazing to see a poc-centric film that accurately depicted the personal emotions of being an immigrant & figuring out your identity between two cultures
The lighthouse to me is the most unique movie ever created, I watched it and couldn't believe, the film was shot with a vintage 1930's Baltar lens, and the film used a custom short pass filter to achieve that particular black and white effect. From the lighting to the camera work, the aspect ratio, exquisite work. The lighthouse was built from the ground up for the purposes of the move. And then the story, that god damn story, never before did a movie captivate me so much, whit its dialogue, acting the mystery....it was just superb !

I've actually seen every A24 movie since The Witch. I had a feeling it was gonna pump out some dope films lol. so I had to get my friends hooked on their movies too. Now I have made a small local cult following 🤗
i tend not to watch youtube videos longer than 10 minutes cause ✨attention defecit✨ but i watched this entire video. your content is set up in a way that keeps me interested and engaged. i love your topic videos!
This was such a relaxed and gentle video, it felt like a friend just sitting down and kind of randomly but really nicely giving me a crash course on a24
I work in reality tv here in NYC, and i’ve actually tried applying for this company after seeing “Ramy.” Being an immigrant myself, i thought it was completely brilliant! But alas, i’m still waiting for my emails to be replied 😩😂. Thanks so much for posting this video! It seems weird to say, but it’s like you read my mind about A24 haha. Never thought i’d find anyone talking about this production company, and i’m so glad you did! 💖
It's so interesting you chose to talk about this topic! lately i've been watching a lot of movies of this studio (not on purpose, out of pure coincidence, you could say i was a basic indie lover - if it's still considered indie ), last night i watched the lighthouse and it was horryingly pleasing lol
Omg same. I’ve been watching a lot of indie ( anything that’s not part of a huge production company or 100% mainstream I consider indie ) and I noticed they all had A24 on their movie posters! I watched “The Florida Project” and loved it and just found out it was A24. They’re really putting out quality movies
Neon is also a really interesting production company they were behind Ingrid Goes West and distributed Parasite. This video was really interesting and I love your vibe subscribed!
The first time my friend and I watched Midsommar it was in the height of the summer, blazing heat and the theatre we went to see it at had their air-con under maintenance. We were sat down for like 2 mins before we started sweating uncontrollably and contemplated leaving but we stayed because we loved Hereditary/Ari/A24, it became our favourite movie, we even went to London to watch the directors cut because no cinema near us was playing it. A24 has the magic for sure.
Anyone that loves A24 HAS to watch Waves !! It's honestly the best movie I've ever watched. The story and "atmosphere" (there, i said it) is so unique and wonderful and it's a shame that it's so underrated Edit: also it's black lead
Rafeeat Bishi as a black person although I see why it’s so controversial, it’s still really impactful and incredible, especially as its a movie that stars black people but doesn’t necessarily make it about race
@@dreamingofthemoon unfortunately, the struggles were very surface level and a lot of people don't realize how the depictions are harmful. I suggest you read this review. Not saying you need to hate the movie!!! But the racial politics are important to critique letterboxd.com/kevinyang/film/waves-2019/ Edit: black lead movies also don't equal greatness especially if it's told through the lens of a white director. If you search up other reviews for the movie you'd understand why it's an issue!
I'm "over 40" and I didn't know what A24 stood for. After watching your extremely well researched video I now know. Thanks. I've subscribed and hit the bell because I look forward to hearing what else you talk about.
what you said about a24 seeing the universality within specificity and that intuition being the crux of their success was so brilliant and eloquently stated. and spot-on, too - when watching their movies, i've felt the essence of how you explained their impact, but hadn't put it into those words. really nice video
i truly cant remember a time where i watched a "lengthy" video like this the whole way through while having little to no knowledge on or interest in the topic of the video. i seriously know nothing about the film industry, so perhaps all this new info just has me excited/surprised, but i really think it's the way you articulate and show your personality here and there throughout the video that pulls your audience in. and imo thats something rare to find on this platform. thanks for all this info :)
This analysis is so deft. What you said about 'the crux of authenticity' is so right on. When a public of others can recognize something of themselves in an other's individuated vision... what's more true and beautiful than that.
does anyone else want amanda to make a podcast? i swear i just love listening to her talking and being intellectual; it's just a plus that her voice is soooo smooth
Seriously, where do kids in coming-of-age movies get the friends and aesthetic backdrops? I had to have my formative emotional distress in the bathroom of a regular-ass house.
Sometimes that can be just enough, alot of times it the way it is shoot. And depending on what the story that might be perfect, if you shoot it right(lighting also plays an important role!!)
Your story about driving to see Eighth Grade struck a chord with me because earlier this year, I drove two hours to see The Lighthouse in a cinema (pre-Covid!) with some friends. I wouldn't normally have done this, but I had faith in both Robert Eggers and A24 that they would make the trip worthwhile.
Love love love these video essays!!! Just leaving this here for myself because you managed to verbalise perfectly something that I think can be applied to several mediums, and why audiences connect with some pieces of art better than others 'A24 execs are able to see the universality within the specificity of a story which is, essentially, the crux of authenticity. Anyone can recognise but it can only be manufactured from real personal experience'

I've actually seen every A24 movie since The Witch. I had a feeling it was gonna pump out some dope films lol. so I had to get my friends hooked on their movies too. Now I have made a small local cult following 🤗
this video is so great!
homegirl if you haven't seen Waves you have to stop everything you're doing, watch Waves, then cry listening to Blonde and then you're good
such a good movie with such a good soundtrack
I KNOW RIGHT!
I watched Waves like a week ago and I dont know if I've ever cried harder in a movie. So good!!
Waves has so many issues 😭. A lot of black people didn't like how it was made
@@rafeeat3657 oh rly? i've never heard that before. i'll have to research more on that..
amanda, your videos are like aesthetically pleasing research papers about topics i'm actually interested in and i'm HERE FOR IT
i love a24 they are such a breath of fresh air.
i tend not to watch youtube videos longer than 10 minutes cause ✨attention defecit✨ but i watched this entire video. your content is set up in a way that keeps me interested and engaged. i love your topic videos!
Omg I am actually the same way for most videos lol so that means a lot!
the content quality on this channel that’s just going up and up is ,,, *chefs kiss* ✨
This was such a relaxed and gentle video, it felt like a friend just sitting down and kind of randomly but really nicely giving me a crash course on a24
Subbing because of how monumentally chill this video is
I sometimes wonder why I still come to this platform but then I remember your videos. They are worth it. This is TREMENDOUS quality content.
@@aaliyahstark7948 The Florida Project was really good
Neon is also a really interesting production company they were behind Ingrid Goes West and distributed Parasite. This video was really interesting and I love your vibe subscribed!
Had this in my Watch Later until today. This is a great video. Thank you!
The story and "atmosphere" (there, i said it) is so unique and wonderful and it's a shame that it's so underrated
Edit: also it's black lead
Have you read any reviews from Black writers on Waves? It's not as great as it seems 😭
Rafeeat Bishi as a black person although I see why it’s so controversial, it’s still really impactful and incredible, especially as its a movie that stars black people but doesn’t necessarily make it about race
@@rafeeat3657 I really liked it because even though the main focus wasn't on race, they still managed to show the struggles as a black family
@@skreen2theworld809 exactly!
@@dreamingofthemoon unfortunately, the struggles were very surface level and a lot of people don't realize how the depictions are harmful. I suggest you read this review. Not saying you need to hate the movie!!! But the racial politics are important to critique
letterboxd.com/kevinyang/film/waves-2019/
Edit: black lead movies also don't equal greatness especially if it's told through the lens of a white director. If you search up other reviews for the movie you'd understand why it's an issue!
The information I didn’t know I needed. Thx lol love your channel ❤️
I'm "over 40" and I didn't know what A24 stood for. After watching your extremely well researched video I now know. Thanks. I've subscribed and hit the bell because I look forward to hearing what else you talk about.
you literally make the content i NEEED. thank you so much. idk how you mange to make videos about the exact things I think about!
what you said about a24 seeing the universality within specificity and that intuition being the crux of their success was so brilliant and eloquently stated. and spot-on, too - when watching their movies, i've felt the essence of how you explained their impact, but hadn't put it into those words. really nice video
i love your videos so much, i love the way you articulate your thoughts and i cant wait for your channel to blow up. sending love from the bahamas
This was such a well informative video! A24 is my favorite studio and production company today
When you started naming all the movies I was like “damn have I actually seen EVERY A24 movie!?” 😂
Tysm for this breakdown! A24 has indeed been absolutely amazing these past 2 years since your outstanding video
Thank you for injecting incredible niche information with a shot of serotonin straight into my brain.
i truly cant remember a time where i watched a "lengthy" video like this the whole way through while having little to no knowledge on or interest in the topic of the video. i seriously know nothing about the film industry, so perhaps all this new info just has me excited/surprised, but i really think it's the way you articulate and show your personality here and there throughout the video that pulls your audience in. and imo thats something rare to find on this platform. thanks for all this info :)
“Three characters, two numbers, one letter.”
That is such a good line.
your articulation and content is phenomenal, you demonstrate a prowess and real interest in what you discuss and its very impressive. good shit g
I feel like you would probably would end up a famous film director. 😩
Ikr! I really see her going somewhere, she seems to have a lot of creative talent
I adore your narrative pace with these video essays, you always choose topics that resonate with me. Keep up the good work.
UR VIDEOS ARE ALWAYS SO WELL DONE ! so amazing 🥺🥺🥺
This analysis is so deft. What you said about 'the crux of authenticity' is so right on. When a public of others can recognize something of themselves in an other's individuated vision... what's more true and beautiful than that.
I just really love your channel, and the topics you have been talking about recently and i hope you keep making more content in the future.
Thanks for making this! I’ve been curious about A24 after realizing some of my favorite movies were theirs
I love a24 so much. can't wait for the green knight
your videos are so high quality!
Title of the video: “the rise of a24”
Amanda: “Two letters one number”
Me: a...2...4🤔
P.S. I love your videos💕😂
does anyone else want amanda to make a podcast? i swear i just love listening to her talking and being intellectual; it's just a plus that her voice is soooo smooth
the movie "eighth grade" IS SO GOOD 10/10 RECOMMEND AHH ITS SO ACCURATE
omg i love that movie it’s so good
Blessing us with another video on point! Thanks Amanda!
You are looking at the comments while watching aren’t you
😶 no...maybe...
im so thankful that i stumbled your channel because evrything you talk about is making me a better director and writer
Hereditary was the most shockingly horrific things I've seen in my life it was overwhelmingly disturbing
I looove this style of commentary videos from you yess 🥰 and yes. Guggenheim logo is evil vibes who designed her
RIGHT the doofinshmirtz (idk how to spell it) evil incorporated jumped
I’ve been waiting for a video about A24 like this one
Wait I didn't know a24 has merch... I might need to check that out
I never realized how many actually well known movies were produced by A24! Great Video!
Amanda: I remember seeing Eight Grade during high school
Me: I've never felt older
Same.
"only 5 million dollars"
i think i too need only 5 million dollars
I freaking lost it when you mentioned Zola was confirmed, from the night I first read the whole thread, I KNEW there had to be a movie.
"it's the disney of the indie world"
i just wanna say ur new, like, research-heavy videos are super interesting and eye opening. i loved this.
A24 is what Miramax use to be before being brought out by Disney.
I never truly knew A24, but ever since I saw Moonlight I knew it was unique and special.
welcome aboard
me watchin the end credits of the last episode to Euphoria seein Future and Drake as producers: 👀👄👀
Didn't they just pick up Hazbin Hotel? So excited!
wait reallyyyy yes!!!
This is so big for an indie tv animated show and gives a lot of small artists hope
bro if a horror movie is made by A24 you KNOW it’s about to slap
