We're trying to feature as many of the sedans killed off in 2020 before they leave us for good. One of those is this 2020 Ford Fusion Titanium Plug-in Hybrid, formerly known as the Energi. This mid-size PHEV sedan might be aged in the segment, but it still offers a lot to buyers who want a reasonably well equipped car with approximately 37km of full EV range. We go over all the specifications for this Fusion Plug-in including the 2.0L Atkinson 4 cylinder engine, CVT, 9 kWh battery, and how it all stacks up against the two major competitors we've driven: the 2020 Kia Optima PHEV and 2020 Honda Clarity PHEV.
We discuss important buying questions shoppers will have including the MSRP, incentives available in Canada & Québec, trunk space, and interior room. We also go over the options available on this Titanium trim to price it up TestDrive style.
We then take the 2020 Ford Fusion Energi on a road test to talk about how this vehicle handles our 100km fuel economy tests, including how far we can drive on a single charge in EV mode, how many electric kilometres we can drive during our 100km Test Loop, and what our overall fuel economy was during that drive. We also discuss how the car handles and performs on the road, and some of the reasons why you might want to consider the Fusion as your next car.
A number of PHEV tests we look at is whether or not you can run the A/C and climate systems while the vehicle is charing, if you can remotely start the engine while the vehicle is plugged in, if the charging port locks with the doors, and what sort of information the car gives you in terms of fuel economy/consumption and hybrid mode status.
We wrap up our episode going over our final thoughts on this car, and some ideas we have for Ford in order to keep this vehicle in the North American market.

Ford should 1000% not discontinue the Fusion line. They are comfortable, stylish, safe, and all around good vehicles to drive. I have a Fusion Sport and it is the best driving car I have owned. I cherish every mile I get to drive in it. Hopefully Ford gets the message that some of us would buy another Fusion if they kept making them. I could totally envision a Fusion EV. I agree with comments that the interior could do with a refresh.
It's really a shame that the American manufacturers are all abandoning cars. I'd get it if these vehicles saw the same catastrophic sales decline the Volkswagen Passat did in the US for 2019, but the Fusion sells incredibly well, and I'd be willing to bet it would sell better if Ford came out with a new generation, slapped a bigger battery on the PHEV, and modernized it.
I couldn't agree with you more. I think Ford was a little short-sighted on this decision. Great car and hoping too they (Ford) will realize it's potential and that not everyone wants or needs an SUV or truck.
I hope so too! I love driving cars, and I really enjoyed my time with this one even though it's a dated platform.

I've loved the Fusion's exterior since the day it came out. It still looks good compared to other vehicles even today due to it's clean design. The interior is a whole different story and I think should have been changed years ago. It still doesn't have heated rear seats as far as I can tell. It's a shame Ford is killing it off but they've done nothing with it for years so it's no surprise. Midsize sedans still sell - Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Nissan and Honda still sell them. Ford doesn't the desire or money (or both?) to continue competing. Shame.
Personally I don't get the decision to kill it either. The Toyota Camry & Honda Accord will continue on to dominate without any US domestic brands to compete with.
because they didn't want to compete. if you look at the interior of a fully loaded Accord or Mazda 6, your looking at an arguably BETTER interior then even some Lincoln or Cadi models provide...
-it cost ALOT to make a NIIIICE interior like that.
-the MSRP's of these cars have gone up only a tiny amount.
-to make a new competitive interior they really would not be making much money on the cars being sold.
-all domestic brands like Ford/Chevy/Chrysler are protected by a old bill that was signed into law in like the 1950's that basically puts a 7,000$ tax on all trucks/SUV's being sold by non domestic brands.
THAT is why they gave up on cars, competition got to good and they arnt protected in the car segment. That 7,000$ tax is also why no other non domestic brands really touch Ford F-150 or Chevy Silerado sales even tho the F-150 hasn't been updated in what feels like 20 years... Meanwhile Chevy and Ford make most of theirs cars/trucks now a days in factories outside the US... if you ask me the 7,000$ tax should be removed so Ford & Chevy can finally experience fair competition and be FORCED to make a competent product.
"Heated rear seats"...Do people actually use this stuff? Why not complain about ventilated rear seats? The people in my back seat should consider themselves lucky for getting a ride. You have an armrest and vents. What's next? Demanding reclining rear seats with massage capability in a midsize FAMILY sedan?
In this segment, I want something as basic as possible to get me from point A to B with no issues. If I wanted all the bells and whistles (money pit over time) I would buy a luxury car. Everything (especially electronics) WILL break.
I guess I was born in the wrong decade. Leather (especially Fords) suck. Freezing in the winter and hot as hell in the summer. Cloth? You don't need seat "heaters" or "ventilation" lol. Moonroofs that eventually leak. I don't want to talk to my car, nor do I need driving "aids" to help me.

Yes Really Love my Ford Fusion Energi PEHV. I bought brand new in August 2021. Had to go out of State to get one. So if your looking you might be able to find one or two. Best to move fast though. I plug in at work and home so I rarely stop to get gas anymore. So far I don’t have many complaints. Don’t even mine the limited trunk space. Wish I knew about this car earlier but glad I was able to secure one.

I own a 2015 SE model of this car. Paid off. And it's one of the best cars that I've ever owned. Very few technical issues outside of my charge indication ring around the charge port no longer functioning properly and the piano black portions of the door cracking in the Texas heat. I was seriously considering trading it in for a newer model of the Fusion had Ford decided to continue to expand on the vehicle. But not only did they not expand on it, they started taking things away from it as the years went on. Such as the stitched leather dashboards they used to have on the top end trim and the option to have black factory rims. I guess that's in light of the fact that Ford had decided that it was going to get axed along with the rest of their car line outside of the Mustang. It's a damn shame. Had they kept up with their premium interiors (or updated it all together), modernized the tech and moved the battery underneath the back seat like the rest of the competition instead of eating up all the trunk space with it because they didn't want to modify the chassis design, it could have been a near perfect car. (Trunk space is important to my wife and I.) I guess, like you, I'll be trading to a Honda Clarity instead. Now if I can just get Honda to put a sunroof on that thing...
I really liked this car, and it's a shame Ford has given up entirely on sedans in North America. They had the potential to make something really good out of this but chose to take Volkswagen's approach with the Passat and continue selling the same thing year over year with fewer features.
Yes! I love it when you do PHEV HEV and BEV cars!! Maybe you could start doing some "Used PHEV/BEV reviews" to help people realise that they can be had for cheap! BEVs specifically, and especially from Quebec, are getting super cheap (as low as $7-8k) and are a great second car to reduce gas and maintenance on your ICE vehicle.

Great idea! I'm trying to book as many hybrids/electrics as possible before the end of the year, I've got a few more full EVs lined up already. I'm also hoping to get some used ones also now that I'm finding some friendly dealers in the area to work with. They sell pretty quickly though!
@@PRNTestDrive ya true enough! I just think it would be a great way to show people that owning an electric car errands or work isn't as expensive as they might think. With prices dropping like crazy and rebates available on used EVs it's the perfect time. I wonder if it would be easier to get a used EV to review or a new one🤔😂
My dad's car is a 2017 Fusion Energy, it's really a nice car. For him, fuel efficiency is around 2.1l /100km in summer, which is great. On my side, I wish this technology will be available in the Maverick AWD soon.
I'm surprised Ford isn't taking this tech and applying it to their other vehicles. With this being dead after the previous model year the only PHEV in their North American fleet is the Lincoln Aviator. A Maverick Plug-In would be killer.
I knew nothing about this car before yesterday. I had driven the Ioniq, prius prime, and a couple others. I ended up trading in my 2015 Optima Hybrid for the 2020 Fusion Energi today. Hands down a better car than my Optima, so happy I was able to purchase one (with 10kUS in dealer rebates). Thanks for the in depth video.

Is it actually possible to get a rebate on a 2020 fusion energy in the USA?
I own a 2017 energi titanium and I love it. I really hope Ford brings it back, for now I'm just considering buying a newer used model to buy some more time.
I don't think we'll see this vehicle again in North America sadly, SUVs are the future according to manufactures and buying trends. After owning the Focus Electric for a while I would definitely take one of these, especially now that I've moved to a less EV-friendly market. I really enjoyed my time with this car.
I looked the PHEV fusion few years ago, saw the trunk space and was shocked that Ford had not progressed since my 2012 Lincoln MKZ hybrid. (just a pocket where the floor of the trunk used to be.) What good is a sedan if it does not have a decent trunk. (The MKZ's battery blocked off the back of the trunk so the rear seats did not drop down but would still hold luggage for 2) Also the trade in value offered for the Lincoln was pitifully low because it was a hybrid and no one wants a used one! My local used dealer had no interest at all in hybrids because of the battery. Still have the MKZ (with some panel rust through) and have had very few problems with it. Ended up getting a Kia Niro EV, got $3K off as trade-in on a 2007 Camry hybrid which went straight to auction...
The trunk space on this is terrible, it's why the Honda Clarity is still my choice in this segment, the design of it's rear end helps to solve any space issues. Prices for used Fusion Hybrids (non-plug-in) are dirt cheap here, you can pick one up for a lot less than other mid-size sedans.
I own a 2018 Fusion Platinum 2.0 Twin Scroll Ecoboost & I Love My Car! It’s FWD and it Never Understeers!.. It almost Rotates if you let off the gas and mid corner lol
Glad to hear you're enjoying yours! I would be 100% in the market for one of these, PHEV or regular gas if I needed a daily driver. I was very happy with my time with this, it's unfortunate Ford's given up on this car in North America.

The battery icon disappearing is a setting that you can adjust. Mine stays on regardless of how much battery I have, as I've adjusted that display setting.

My concern about any of those electrified car is the battery longevity in the harsh winter condition of Quebec. In my mind, they are most suitable for the sunny California, not for the -30C Quebec.....
I'm curious about the long-term for these as well. There's a guy up in Québec City with a Tesla Model S that he uses as a taxi, last I saw he had over 300,000km on it. Ideally these cars would be great down the road if you could replace the battery with a more efficient battery pack, maybe in 8 years a 20 kWh pack would fit in what this 9 kWh took up today, but then the software on the car would have to adjust for the change also. If someone built a car with that in mind we'd be able to keep these for a lot longer.
Sucks there is a open Recall on these cars... but i'm going to take a chance and use it as a work vehicle... get to save my Challenger Scat Pack lol. Those Fusions do drive nice.
From what I can see on NTSB website there are a few programs open on these, none seem to be dire from what I can tell. This is a car I'd buy today, especially with the updates Ford is offering through their customer experience programs.

I'm disappointed it's done for after this year, so much potential. I'm glad I was able to get into this though! I'm going to try and get a few more of our Dead-For-2020 sedans featured this year.
The thing that burns me about our 2017 Ford Fusion Energi / Plug-in Hybrid is that they waste all the space in the tire-well and they could have added another 5 miles of range (Paltry 25 mi range is a big downer in this car) or they could have added another 3-4 cu ft. of trunk space if it weren't such a klugely solution (basically Ford installs a modification kit from Canada's Magna International which isn't co-designed with the car, and wastes a lot of trunk space.) We own a Tesla model 3 and lease a Fusion Energi but we'll probably send it back to Ford ...
It's really unfortunate that Ford gave up on this instead of investing in the technology. Hyundai Motor Group has had great success creating a platform that can adapt hybrids, plug-ins, and full electrics with the Kona, Ioniq, and Niro. Ford could have invested in a way to adapt the Mach-E technology work in a more mainstream car market like this Fusion.
How does this hybrid differ from the Lincoln 2.0 hybrid? Which is not a plug in.
From my understanding both cars use the same Duratec 2.0L inline-4 engine, the PHEV just has a larger battery for more electric driving range, whereas the Lincoln's regular hybrid just helps to offset overall fuel economy with the electric system.
does it have lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control?
Yes to both! They are available on the Fusion PHEV.
You should look up the new Ford fusion in China. It's called the Ford Mondeo. Looks gorgeous and It's a beast.
It definitely does! Wish they would sell that vehicle here, I've always preferred cars over SUVs and would love to have something like that. I may still end up trying to get one of these.

Unfortunately it’s due to my cameras, I don’t have the right gear that can synchronize with the LED refresh rate.
i think they coulda put a big battery in that ford focus electric till another ev other than the mach E. I coulda seen the focus energi get a bigger phev battery here, maybe the volts 60 miles.
That would have been my hope, use some of what they've developed for the Mach-E and bring it to other vehicles like the Fusion.
PRN_TestDrive wasted effort. Definitely looking into a used focus ev or fusion phev for a second car to our leaf plus. They are so cheap.

I wish I knew, I see Euro-spec Focus' all the time since I've joined a number of enthusiast groups for it, fantastic looking car. Sad they don't sell it here, I'd be very interested in it.
I am so glad I chose the regular hybrid over the Energi. I was considering both but went with regular hybrid for 3 reasons.
1. Trunk space. There is literally NONE whatsoever due to the bigger battery. I didn't expect this when I seen it. HUGE turn off.
2. Lack of models. Almost all Energi's are loaded models. I didn't want leather or a moonroof. The SE hybrid still comes standard with all the tech stuff.
3. Charging. The regular hybrid charges itself and I still get between 55-60mpg in city driving. If I were to go through the trouble of paying to have a charger installed on my house, I would just get a full EV. I stop at a gas station every 6 weeks for less than 5 minutes.
Sounds like you made the right decision based on what you needed. Enjoy your Fusion! I really liked this one, it would have been a car I'd have bought if I had been in the market for one.
Are they expensive to maintain
They shouldn’t be, there’s not much that’s overly complexe outside of the hybrid system. I see a lot of them on the roads here, you shouldn’t necessarily have any higher maintenance costs over a regular sedan.
Ford never had a cool dedicated vehicle like GM with its Chevrolet Volt in midsize sedan segment.This particular Ford Fusion PHEV is a compliance car with worse trunk and performance than other versions of Fusion. That's why killing this one especially after discontinuing all sedans in North America was not so painful for Ford as for GM with its Volt. Ford, GM and FCA gave up small affordable car segment in North America to Asian manufacturers a while ago. Yes, at the end of the day consumers will have less choices, which unfortunately will further decimate this segment of the market.
I think the death of this car was the most disappointing for me, they had potential to make something really good out of it. I'm driving the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu this week, I was shocked they even kept it for the 2020 model year.

I got mine in June 21' and it was hard to find. They would become available then disappear before I could lock in. I pretty much had to take whatever color was available. Fortunately I love the Titanium White. It's too bad they basically capitulated to the foreign car makers like that.
My last car was a HEMI and when it finally died my older, post mid-life, self decided to go to the other end of the spectrum and embrace economy as well as ecology. Also it's becoming obvious that, with gas prices and climate change being a given, it's time to move on into the future. Just not in a Fusion after this.
Looks like American brand manufacturers entirely gave up on sedans, hatchbacks and especially on station wagons the way GM and Ford gave up on minivans long time ago. Ford is keeping only its sport muscle coupe - mustang besides of SUVs and trucks.
Personally I'm disappointed with this decision from the US manufacturers. The Euro-spec Ford Focus looks really nice, a serious competitor to some of the new compact sedans/hatches we've gotten here recently, and same goes for this Fusion. I really liked this one, with some small updates Ford could have brought some life back into this car.
I thought ford no longer made passinger cars for the north American market accept the mustang.
They don't, the Focus was killed off after the 2018 model year, but the Fusion stayed on until 2020. Technically you can still buy a new 2020 at a dealer if they have any leftover stock, as these ended up sitting on the lots for a very long time.

Some cars end up being a better deal up here than in the US when you factor in the currency exchange, the Korean cars are a great example where they sell for nearly the same figure, but vastly different once you convert the currency.
My request to all automotive vloggers... please stop asking for more features and technology, and stop dissing plastic panels... many consumers just want an affordable car and don't care about all the bells and whistles

Gotta save every penny. I find VW does this a lot too, unfortunately this was the first Fusion I featured so I didn't know what to look for versus previous model years.
