  • Chief Introduces Six Goals to Help Improve Safety
Las Cruces Police Department Chief Jeremy Story has introduced a summary of changes that can be made to help make Las Cruces a safer community.
    The three short-term goals include:
    - Fill open positions within LCPD. The department has a capacity of 220 commissioned law enforcement officers, but currently has 25 vacancies.
    - Replace constitutionally problematic ordinances with ordinances that are enforceable in their entirety, ordinances that would give officers tools to address the issues businesses and residents are facing.
    - Establish a Real-Time Crime Center within LCPD. A RTCC would prevent crime from occurring, help solve and prosecute crime and help increase officer safety.
    The three long-term goals include:
    - Address competency issues. Too many criminal cases are being dismissed in Municipal Court, Magistrate Court and District Court.
    - Address Bail Reform. The 2016 constitutional amendment has been ineffective at protecting New Mexicans.
    - Address the fentanyl and meth crisis. Many of the increases in crime over the last few years are directly related to the increase usage of fentanyl and meth.
During a March 1 news conference, Story expanded on those six goals and explained how they would help make Las Cruces a safer community. The full video of Friday’s news conference can be seen City of Las Cruces RUclips channel @lascruces.gov

It's really good to hear a Chief of Police with the courage to come out and speak the truth like this. We're with you Chief Story! Our state elected officials need to listen.

You are right however Gabe Vasquez is one of the biggest defund the police supporters. Recently trying to close down the prisons in Milan and proponent of open borders. Guarantee they have security live in gated communities. Stop voting for these people.

The Chief highlights some excellent points and issues. It will be interesting to see if the City Council and DAs office are as dedicated to improving the quality of life and safety. Either way, I know a number of Police Officers with LCPD, and they are thankful that they have a Police Chief now who not only understands police work , but who also knows how to lead and inspire. The Chief is not alone either. There are a number other LTs and SGTs who have the same qualities he does. Las Cruces is better off now than we have been in a while IMO.

All of these are wonderful things but it would help to address the mental health mental illness issues.
I worked at the detention center in Las Cruces. As a therapist, there are no programs anymore for substance abuse for mental health. There is nothing at all, ,they occasionally come to therapy maybe, once a month. The mental illness really needs to be addressed ,in El Paso they had a social worker like me riding with the police.
To help with the mental health issues. Also At other jobs I've had. I worked with first responders and the police at different times when they came in separately. But it would help to have a program there where your police officers. Feel comfortable to go talk to someone as well. But kudos to you for making the effort for the change. As I do hope to move to Las Cruces actually. Since I have worked there for 20 years as an LCSW

I’m happy to see the city taking accountability and willing to make changes AND have a RUclips/social media presents, get this news to the people of our city and let them know the city and police want to keep us safe, and rid the homeless problem especially after what happened with the officer losing his life.

You do remember the man who killed the officer had serious problems with mental illness. How do we just get rid of people? Its not that simple to just say who's good and who's bad. These are really complex issues with no easy answers.

Chief, just give me a badge already and I'll keep watching and thwarting crime like I always do. You don't have to pay me. It's my duty as a citizen of Las Cruces. Also, give more funding to the crossing guards. They risk their lives trying to protect our future way of life.
    Summary:
    1. Give me a badge.
    2. Give more money to crossing guards.
    Thanks Chief.

Since there is an officer shortage, now is the time to also implement real concrete police reform. We are talking about traffic stops and pulling people out of their cars for not using a blinker or supposedly running a stop sign, and now our government through policing has someone handcuffed as they searched our cars . Doing exactly what the Founding fathers were against. We need to reestablish a fourth amendment for the people. Then your police numbers will start to grow again. One of the reasons for the officer shortage is due to karma.!!

I got stopped by las Cruses pd last summer, didn't get a reason at first but the young officer said i was speeding after I gave him my papers. i told him I wasn't and I had 4 cameras of video to prove it. Out of principle i drove the 1100 miles back to New Mexico for Court and prove my case and it was thrown out. How many people just paid the fine instead of fighting it? I served this country to be honest and uphold it's constitution to bad Police don't do the same. I don't trust any person who wears a badge. Be a decent person and don't lie it's not that hard.

I do appreciate the style of our new Chief, but i would like to know what he meant by the brief mention of things. What about constitutional ordinances? And what are you considering for dealing with the competency issues?
And while I see you as pretty straightforward, i think its really important, when talking about the bail reform issue (which i still support) that you would be clear about holding people in jail who have NOT BEEN CONVICTED of a crime. Its important NOT TO ASSUME that every person ACCUSED of a crime is automatically GUILTY. That is whats at stake, the right to a fair trial meaning a person is innocent until proven guilty.
And some of these people are waiting in jail for more than a year before they ever have their case heard..
