I bought it blind and was absolutely blown away by this work of art. At first I found the typical Tauer note a little tiring, but with every wear it grows on me. I often wear it in the evening, better than any drink to wind down. Thanks for your tip about the honey, that fits. 😄
As a beginning perfumer, who gets off on pleasing, I really appreciate hearing your point of view regarding sweetness and its likability for beginners as well as seasoned fragrance junkies.
Love this review! You went deep. I really appreciated the critique on sweetness. Naxos, Herod, Jazz Club are all to some degree intoxicating tobacco fragrances, but as lovely as they are, it can feel a little too “easy”. When I see vanilla, and even more cinnamon in the note breakdown, I get a little nervous! I don’t want my fragrance to smell like apple pie or gingerbread cookies. Thanks for the in-depth journey you took us on! You’re definitely becoming my favorite reviewer.
Thank you so much Nathaniel! I think this does that style very well.. there is some sweetness...but it's so much more classy than these sugar bombs you mentioned... this is my TAUER is back fragrance and to prove it I put my $ where my mouth is and bought a bottle with my own money 💸
Really enjoyed how you broke this one down ,I bought it blind soon as it was released and I loved it from the getgo, I never got the feeling it would turn too sweet luckily lol,but got the Ambergris and Tonka plus the beautiful Tobacco quiet quickly.gotta say it’s one of my favorites in my Tobacco collection, plus seems to improve with time and wearing.cheers Rams Great job 👍🙏✌️
Hi Ram! Excellent note breakdown of the scent journey! I feel like I’ve experienced this scent! I think I have a sample somewhere… Yes, sweet fragrances are very young adult or high school/college, imho. Sometimes in a very festive, clubby, or silly atmosphere they are fun to wear, for me. Otherwise, I prefer something a bit more intellectual, aloof, mysterious. I wonder, do you consider Big White Florals (like 80s flower bombs) too sweet? White flowers can definitely be sweet, but (to me) it’s different from vanilla/candy sweetness off current fashion.
I think the floral bombs of the 80s are a different kind of sweetness.. normally they dont bother me in the way a kind of modern sweetness does... if you are thinking stuff like Iquitos or Tenere... i am a big fan of those types of florals... the sweetness trend seems to be something from the last 20 years or so 😊
Cecile Zarokian spoke quite a bit about tobacco in her latest interview with Sebastian. Insightful stuff. She intimated that many if not most tobacco fragrances on the market nowadays seldom highlight tobacco as a note/accord, opting for sweeter bases. Big fan of the dry and woody leaf myself - in fact my father left me an old, unopened bag of pipe tobacco from the 80s and I was considering making myself a tincture just for layering. Nothing beats the authentic smell in the autumn. 🍂
Spot on ... I love a good cigar when the weather starts to turn ... sitting outside feeling chill burning a good stick... i live in the wrong state since we get like 3 to 4 months of cool weather in Texas 🇨🇱 😂😂😂
I agree 100% about the late dry down, it's freaking magical. I think you would also like Rose Incense and Phi Rose de Kandahar from Tauer if you get a chance to try them, I've sampled most of the main line Tauer and look forward to trying the Flash series next. I think Tauer has the highest hit/miss ratio of any house I've tried, high quality stuff.
@@RamseytheRam I actually picked up a 100ml Tobacco Oud yesterday at a local shop for $400 CAN. I was waiting for the rumoured relaunch of it in the signature line but that turned out to be false
I like that you said chocolate wafers cause when i was smelling the sample of this i thought the initial sweetness and notes where almost candy like but in a grandparents generation candy and i settled on the cocoa necco wafers
I need to try this fragrance I absolutely love au coer du desert and LDDM not sure which one to get a full bottle of. Love the in depth reviews you give
Yes you should ... I liked it so much today I bought a bottle 🤭🥳 To be fair Tobacco is an easy sell for me but still that Tauer quality is here 👍 If you get a chance to get your nose on this do let me know what you think 🙏
Terrific review - so much so I’m going to re-evaluate this on my skin again. I adore tauer perfumes but sundowner didn’t really work for me on skin. Second time lucky :)

Thanks for the detailed review, Ramsay! What a treat hearing your opinions and detailed descriptions of Andy Tauer's stuff. So many people just stop at "it's a masterpiece, but it's dry!" and that's it. Have you gotten a chance to get your nose on Ambra Aurea by Profumum Roma? I'd be interested in hearing your take on that Amber. To me, it's a benchmark amber on the market today. And it uses real ambergris. To me it's so nuanced and I get lost in the detail of it, but to a lot of people it's too linear and boring. So many different people hold up either Ambra Aurea, LDDM, Ambre Loup, or Ambre Sultan as the benchmark amber and again, I'd love to hear your take on the Ambra Aurea and how it stacks up to Ambre Sultan and the others to your nose. Thanks again for the awesome videos!
I have a love/hate relationship with tobacco. Love the smell of a freshly opened packet of loose tobacco, but hate being addicted to the stuff. Always looking for a perfume which replicates the deep, rich aroma of fresh tobacco, and 'Sundowner' is pretty accurate. Also love 'Tobacco Oud', and 'Tobacco Reserve'. Sample of 'Journey Man' is on its way.
That is something that I think comes with experience... when you first start out its hard to pick out what is and isnt quality because you just dont know better. But thanks to Russian Adam sending me those ingridients (and all the frags I got to smell thanks to the generosity of all of you) I feel much more primed to judge "quality". The other thing I learned is you could have an expensive Niche fragrance that cost 300 bucks smell cheap (ie: santal 33) and you could have a cheap costing designer smell expensive (ie: Jaïpur Homme)
This is really good but not very unique to my nose. It actually makes me think of Bengale Rouge. Maybe not the long drydown, but the first hour or so for sure.
Just tried them side by side and they have really different openings where Bengale Rouge is fresh and citrusy and Sundowner is animalic, a little skanky and with some smokiness. After about 10 minutes they start overlapping more. I much prefer Bengale Rouges opening. But am generally not a tobacco fan at all. We have totally different favorite notes! Yet you are the reviewer I watch the most.
😂😂😂 I dont see that at all... but I know skin chemistry matters... also time of year or even what else you were testing at the time could affect your initial impression... but you arent alone in not liking it... i think I might be in the minority in that I like it... might pick up a bottle who knows 🤷♂️
