As a businessman from North America, I need to travel to China at least 3 times in a year for trading shows. I have encountered at least 3 times I left designer wallet, cell phone and even cash on the table. And every time I found the stuff I left exactly where it was. No one bother to touch it.

This can prove that most Chinese people are not greedy for cheap qualities. But please don't do this kind of test. This will make many foreigners follow suit when they come to China in the future. After all, there are good people and bad people everywhere. But then Chinese have facial recognition for buying a metro ticket or a soda from a vending machine
They even have some stores where you are scanned biometric/facially and the items are charged on your account as you leave the store bypassing the need for a checkout counter
We are getting to the point we have to ask some teenager to unlock a toothpaste cabinet to buy toothpaste
Or we are too afraid to shutdown stores or be called racist to a certain demographic
Because folks walk into those stores take items and then bypass the checkout counters as well
That’s because we have a revolving door justice system and you know it
      Btw
You dont want to give up your personal data, bio data, genetic data
Then the USA will fall further behind in fields like A.I.

@arthurlincoln9093 On a per capita basis there are more cameras in the UK than in China. I live in the US and were likely monitored just as much if not more, we just don't advertise it like the Chinese do. Chinese in China understand there's a cost to having one of the MOST secure places in the world where your kids can run around at ALL times of the night without worry.
In US, it's a dangerous place compared to China...even WITH ALL the cameras...

anyone who thinks there is no freedoms in China……
Need to come to Canada where I would argue we have a very liberal constitution
For example where a 50 offence rap sheet career criminal commits yet another crime are arrested and let out the next day… because by law we have to release this person unless they are deemed a danger to society 🙄🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
Or we have cops tells us to put our car keys near the front door of our homes so when some person breaks in to borrow our car for ever….. we don’t get confronted by them 👍
      The most telling is….
I actually live in a city in Canada that is now the most Asian city in North America maybe the world outside of Asia
      Which went from 99% Caucasian
to now 80% Asian and 60% immigrants
      With 54% being Chinese
I would argue their recent voting is a telling factor as they voted for a Conservative Party in the Provincial election and will vote for a Conservative Party in the next Federal Election
That’s because the current Liberal party that currently controls the Provincial Government and the Liberal party that controls the Federal Government for the matter
We’re blamed for a local city government decision/attempt to put a safe injection/consumption site in the city
(when the incidence of drug use in my city is extremely low compared to surrounding cities and the rest of the country)
Kinda like let’s put these sites up near where there is a majority Asians/Chinese… 🤔
Like they originally put the first consumption site ever in North America up near where the original Chinatown was
So these 54% Chinese 60% immigrants could have voted for those freedoms…. but they didn’t
Actually voted in step with a Conservative party that was anti immigrant and most racist against them…🤔🤔🤔
If anything, these are the people who would have been the ones….
who left Hong Kong or China for a better life and more liberal freedoms

This is why you can pick up the goods at China's express delivery stations without anyone stopping you, but no one will steal your express delivery. It seems to be a habit not to take other people's things.

But you do see the outcomes of the campaign.
I am 40 now and was born and raised in Qingdao in north China, and lived most of my life in China, except for 3 years in Paris and Kyoto for a phd. And untill around 2010, china was NOT SAFE at all. Theft was somehow common, policeman asked for bribes, and you should always avoid encounter with some "ethnic groups" on the street. Things changed really a lot but as the Internationale says, change doesn't come from above, it took lots of hard effort to make it a reality.

Today with all the education that crime doest pay , police apprehend culprits quickly and there are 200M CCTVs with face recognition tech - the ppl have gone thru a period of social education and deterrence. Now it is normal just to stay honest and mind your own biz. Also there is no cash so ppl n homes are very safe. Also the ban on guns, drugs and gangs helped keep the streets safe and clean.

Even thieves who were only a few years old were instigated by the gangs to commit large-scale thefts. Due to ethnic policies, they would not be punished and were usually sent back to their registered places of residence. I quickly rushed back to the Tower and approached the reception counter but not really having much hope of ever seeing it again as that was an expensive iphone. Guess what ? When I told the receptionist what had happened, she just smiled, bent down below the counter and handed my iphone (nicely wrapped in a plastic bag) to me and said that someone had found my phone and had handed it to her, thinking that the owner will be back for it. @@MrAlexCage I often say 'freedom' is my favourite thing about China, to the shock and disbelief of westerners. So many freedoms, that I take for granted now. I can take my bike out and park somewhere, go and eat, and come back to it, unlike in UK where it has a parking ticket on it from a private company who want to f**k my life and credit rating up! haha

The watch being there is a little too obvious that someone may have planted it there instead of forgetting it. The sunglasses alone would look more "random" and "believable". I won't leave anything behind for sure because I always check before i leave.

It wasn’t the case before the cameras everywhere.😂. In the old days, the restaurant would put a cover over the customer’s properties if they noticed the customers had put their purses etc. behind their back after sitting down. That’s to prevent thieves. It’s a trade off between the privacy and security.

30 years ago if u leave valuable stuffs outside in china mostly likely people take it, but recent years Chinese economy getting bigger and richer people are busing making real money and not doing petty stuff. On their hands US used to be safer back in the 80s or 90s but now is getting worse due to economy and inflation and stealing is like second income for most people.

From a Chinese: Thank you for your for appreciating our safety and defending our honour, but please be careful in the future and don't do more tests like this, as Chinese myself, wouldn't dare to do that, there are still bad people and crime here, although not as bad as before, but still should be attentive on your personal belongings. Thanks again, legend, have a good time.

Even then, they didn't pick up the items likely because of street surveillance cameras everywhere.

The point some people are missing is not that you should leave your stuff unattended. There is a chance, however slim, that even in China they'll go missing. The point is the relative safety of China compare to many other places. If you happen to forget your belongings at a cafe or a public place, there is good chance it'll be there when you get back. But that is by no means guaranteed. In comparison, if you leave your things in many other countries for even a minute, it's almost guaranteed that it'll be gone. And if you're in the US or UK, they might even take it from you while you're holding it in your hand.

A chinese idiom ‘’ 路不拾遗‘’ do not pick up things on the road, simply means dont take things that not your own. It is always taught to students in schools from young. It is part and parcel of cultural behavior in the chinese society.
