  • We've moved into our new home! We call this place Goldenwood. This brings some big changes for us -- the most important being that we'll be entering a new stage of community living, that we'll have land that we can caretake and wild-garden long term, and that the girls might finally be able to realize their dreams of having horses in their lives. Lots to share today -- thanks for being part of our adventures!

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  Год назад

      Isn't that stove amazing! You are absolutely correct -- those upper shelves are "warming shelves", and the whole upper surface can be used for putting pots on -- one side is right over the fire, so is the hottest, and then it is cooler as you move to the other side, allowing for instant shifts in heat. I can't wait to cook on it and do a video on it! =)

    Very beautiful place... I especially like the absence of modern noise (traffic, car alarms, cars honking, sirens, etc.)... seems very peaceful. I'm guessing from the diversity of plants and birds, it's somewhere in the midwest (??). We lived in the Missouri Ozarks for a few years before moving to our current home in Alaska. The rolling hills of the midwest are unmistakable. The thing I miss the most is the birds... here, we have eagles, owls, ravens, jays, magpies, chickadees, nuthatches, grosbeaks, redpolls and juncos. Still, nothing like the array of birds in the midwest. Thanks for sharing!

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, southern Wisconsin! It is indeed super diverse here -- foraging is amazing! Sounds like you have some great birds! We're far enough south here that we only see ravens once in a while -- one of the things I miss about being up north where they were constant companions =) Thanks for your fun comment!

    Hi all
    Very nice place. While watching, I'd occasionally glance out my own window at the hummingbird at the feeder, and the lush profusion of greenery, some already here when I moved in, and some that I planted. I might have already told you how I 'rewilded' my city house into a food jungle? The idea of abundance and plenty in a world of engineered scarcity is definitely a real thing, but our personal choices can create safe spaces for not only ourselves, but of course the plants and critters that are eager to move into our little havens! Discovering, growing WITH, and continually learning and growing WITH this magical synergy is to me the very essence of what the Great Book of Life is trying to teach us all.
    I've spent many years researching and studying the relationships and micro-climate requirements of plants, and the 'companion plant' thingy. Whoever had that place before you was obviously also very into this area of lore. Anyone can just go out and plant a diversity of flora, but not very many of those plants will be there very long even if tended, if they are not only in a congenial place, but in convivial groupings, or with the proper space around them. LOTS to know and learn about, and I'd love to hear just about everything you can show in this regard. Like I said, those plants ARE in 'community' already, or they would not have done so well. Ya see, even I that already know all things have found it difficult to come across reliable information on companion planting and long term garden viability. Long term success/survival speaks VOLUMES, as does that land in your house area. Was that comfrey behind you in the later part of your video?
    Anyways, it was great to see a place where my own skill level is modest by comparison. Such interests are not really all that common, but quite a few people have told me they are inspired by my yard ideas, and over the last 15 years or so, I've seen a lot of 'emulation' of my land-use technique here in Davis. As we grow together and relearn lost Earth Wisdoms, more will follow and branch out in the countless permutations that are daily building and recreating the diversity and natural resilience and abundance that our lives and communities and our World is sooo ready to receive again. So no worries Rebecca. I that know all things have cried quite a lot over the last few years, and I know why you cry. One of our ultimate forms of expression that is truly true to our inner selves that goes light years beyond anything else I can think of. If more people COULD cry, our world would be well on its way...
    My own dream is to see our safe spaces of rewilded lands meet and interconnect. Ironically, the severe drought of the last 10+ years here in California has greatly reduced the tired old suburban grass/trees/shrubbery landscapes, and encouraged folks to experiment with yardscapes more like mine with sustainable, edible motifs. Gotta love it! Reminds me of a line from Alan Parson's Project: "Step by step, move a little closer to me. Step by step take it line by line. Step by step move a little closer to me. Step by step you're doing fine".
    Remember my very first SUPER LONG email to you in response to your ancient video on that Television offer you got? Where I begged and pleaded with you to take the job because we sooo desperately need some real and genuine bushcraft/survival/rewilding know-how disseminated to the general public? And explained how it would financially enable you to buy a giant sized land parcel and rewild it, and you patiently explained that the video was FOUR YEARS OLD already? Must have got a good laugh out of that one, huh? Well, your karma seems to have leap-frogged you past that, and Good Old Mamma Nature chosen you to care-take and expand this already existing space. A GIANT trust has been placed with you. I look forward to being a part of this, our extended community project!!!!
    BTW, Ana is very interested in gardening, and is sort of taking over a lot of where I 'left-off' in my own projects. Forest LOVES to help out in these doings.
    Peace, Love, and Respects, John, Ana, and Little Forest

      Hi Friends! So exciting that Ana has that interest in gardening. What you've started there is not just inspiring -- it's an educational resource that can help others to look differently at what used to be a "lawn". I love that the drought is having that unforeseen effect of having people question the wisdom of monoculture lawns.
      Ha! I do remember that long ago email! The beginning of many great nuggets of wisdom and thoughtfulness shared back and forth =)

All of life is an adventure and we always get that feeling reinforced with we watch your videos or connect with you.... one of our favorite things! That was until you mentioned cooking when I realized actually I would really love to learn the process on a few of your favorite recipes or what you do with some of the foraged items even; you are such great chefs! I was thinking that a few videos back about the horta. You could do a video showing the whole process from ID to foraging to preparation of really any dish that stands out to you. That would selfishly make it easy for us to try. 😁 That and I would say don't discount your bushcraft videos either. I think you have a very unique perspective and often do share skills I don't run across elsewhere, or even in the case of it being elsewhere, from a very different and helpful perspective. Buongiorno! Even a small move is a heck of an endeavor, but it's a good time to review everything you own and filter what you could get rid of or better organize everything. I get the not deserving thing, it's been a lifelong struggle for me, at the same time, I know God wants the best of things for us. All the beautiful nature is evidence of that. Awwwww Rebecca, I'm glad you two share your life and family with us, it's been really nice getting to know you guys. Wingedy 🐉 hugs for all of y'all.
    Pretty piece of land and will say I do like the natural woodwork and stonework of the house itself. Always nice to see more natural looking architecture. Wild gardening, that's an interesting idea. If you plant things that do well in y'all's type of environment, it probably would grow like mad. Then it's just a matter of harvesting on occsaion. Shoot if y'all can do canning, then you could be pretty self-sustainable through the winter even. Those mushrooms look yummy. Wonder how they would be in spaghetti or a dish like that.
    Worst case if you go downstairs and forget something, you'll get plenty of exercise hehe. Kenton could bench 250 and still say he's "weak" 🤣🤣 I think it's cool idea of have a large scope of land where a few families set up homes on it and kind of equally share the property. With that, you can sculpt who your neighbors are and get folks around who're of like mind and values. Also, if you have folks around of different skills, then you have most all the skills you need on the property, growing food, fixing things, building things, etc.
    I do like the idea of doing vids where you guys say... like the soup you had... part of the vid out in the wild getting the mushrooms or other wild ingredients + whatever else you may add to it, then see the making of the food you make with it. I have a small freezer just for Butter, Chocolate Chips, and comfort foods. I'll have to dig out the all Butter and put the new stuff on the bottom of the pile. Always a chore that one since I insist on keeping a years supply frozen.

But at this point, our jobs are just our RUclips channel, our writing, and a small amount of one-on-one teaching that I do creating custom wilderness skills/martial arts/mindfulness programs for clients. We have a pretty low income, actually, but because we don't have things like TV subscriptions, a fancy car, etc., and because we get so much of our food from foraging and from friends who have small farms, our expenditures are quite low compared to most people.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  Год назад +3

      Hi Friend! We're definitely not vegan, and hope that we can have mutual respect between us even though we may disagree on some things =) I love veganism because it is based on kindness and compassion, which is SO needed in the world. At the same time, our family is devoted to connecting people with nature, and for kids especially, we see it as essential that kids get right in there and touch things, explore, look under logs -- things that may indeed be disruptive to the animals and plants living there, but that foster curiosity and wonder. My fear is that if we have a "don't touch" policy, humans will forget what it is to connect with nature, and it might actually backfire -- at least in families we've seen who have more of a "don't touch" attitude, the kids gravitate toward screens instead of nature.
      Liliana spent about five hours yesterday trying to nurse a butterfly who had been hit by a car. It was a hopeless task from the beginning, but she removed it from the road and protected it from birds, giving it water and fruit if it wanted to eat. She loves all things that crawl or fly or gallop, and wants to both care for them and be close to them.
      I think when we allow a disconnect, then people can start to believe that they are being kind to nature when they really aren't. For instance, our family tries to source our food very carefully. With vegetables, we realize that if we buy conventional, or even organic vegetables, that those vegetables come from fields that used to be prairie or woodland -- that vegetable might feel harmless to eat, but in truth thousands and thousands of animals, insects, snakes, and birds were displaced and killed in order to make the monoculture fields that produce those vegetables. So we try to source as much of our food as we can from small family farms where we know the people are growing food as best they can in balance with nature.
      When eating plants, we also try to remember that just as some people might suggest that a cow or a bug's consciousness is qualitatively less than a humans', and thus we can just treat them however we want to, that same reasoning is used to treat plants badly. As more research suggests that plants may have their own kind of "consciousness" (probably vastly different than anything we can imagine, but perhaps no less important than ours?), we think it's important to think of plants just as we think of animals -- as living beings who are worthy of our respect and love.
      In my view, we are constantly killing in order to live. Drive a car a few miles, and you will kill hundreds or thousands of insects, and very likely a bird or a few small mammals. We usually ignore this, but if we realize that driving kills so many, perhaps we will weigh differently our decision about whether a drive feels important enough. Indeed, if we're on a screen of any kind -- a computer or smart phone -- we have directly contributed to the killing of countless beings, because the mining, the factories, the roads used to transport our goods -- all of these things required the destruction of countless homes and lives of different beings.
      So we realize that we are killers. Constant killers. And knowing that we are, we can connect more deeply with nature, because we realize that other animals and plants are doing the same thing -- killing things in order to live. We humans can see that as horrible, or we can see it as a beautiful process that connects us all. Each of us, too, will get to someday be killed, often by a bacteria or virus, and will get to feed other beings with our own flesh.
      As for horses, horses often love human connection. The other day we walked out into a vast field where six horses lived. They ran over to us in a herd and were a little pushy trying to get close so they could get scratched, breath into our faces (a way they connect), and just be by us. They wouldn't leave us alone! Animals often love connection with humans, and horse connection, if done without violence, is one of the most amazing animal/human connections you can experience. We can never know what is in another person's mind, not to mention in another animal's mind, but from the actions of the horses, there was definitely the suggestion that connecting with us was much more interesting than anything else they were doing, and they had a VAST field to roam with hills and trees and a stream and woods -- we walked and walked but didn't even come near seeing the other side. A hint that these horses appreciate the connection?
      The snake that Liliana caught was obviously scared, but again, we can't know the mind of an animal. Many of my scariest experiences have also become my favorite memories. I imagine that if a huge dragon picked me up and flew me up to the clouds, I'd be terrified. But when it deposited me back on the ground, I'd run to my family and tell them about the amazing experience I had. Perhaps the snake was just traumatized. Perhaps it went back and told its buddies about the dragon that picked it up (and, incidentally, removed it from the road where it likely might have been run over by a car) and remembers it as the most amazing experience of his life. We don't know -- but for me, I tend to think that through touching, exploring, and being as intimate as possible with nature, we develop a sense of realizing how much we are harming, rather than learning to ignore the harm we do (which is when humans can start to do large-scale harm, like monoculture farming).
      Just some thoughts -- thank you for trying to live as kindly and compassionately as you can!
      With love,
      Kenton =)

      The way I percieve the snake interaction is that the snake was in a state of ecstatic joy, blissed out that humans chose to play with her on that day. All animals are very fluent in the language of energy, this includes intention and feelings. If you study the work of animal communicators such as one of my favorites, Anna Breytenbach, you will learn that all animals have great respect and love for humans, and they can tell very easily which humans are friends and which are not. There are a few videos about Anna and her work on youtube, one of my favorites is "The incredible story of how leopard Diabolo became Spirit - Anna Breytenbach, "animal communicator". It is a 13 min. video and shows a good example of just how well animals know humans that eminate love, and those that don't. I believe that when we sincerely love animals, honor them and express gratitude for the nourishment that they bring to our bodies when we eat them providing vibrancy and health, that they gladly give there life for that purpose and it even brings them fulfillment. Native Americans and other indigenous peoples understood this long ago, it is only our modern society that has lost contact with this wisdom. But many, like Kenton, are trying to bring back this wisdom and I for one express my gratitude for those efforts.
