  • Jordan's talk from the 2023 Practical Farmers of Iowa Conference.
Learn how we have made raising and selling pastured turkeys a streamlined and simple process at J & L Green Farm. This is a scaled enterprise raising around 1000 turkeys a year.
We, Jordan and wife, Laura, own and operate J & L Green Farm in Virginia. It has been our full time occupation since 2009, building this first generation, pasture based, direct to retail farm. We are in the small percentage of farmers that actually make their income from farming. As such we address our farm as a business and make decisions with that in mind. What you see here is what it takes. No BS or disney’ifying.

60 bucks for a turkey is absolutely not unreasonable. I cannot find any turkey online in the midwest at that price point. Producers need to immerse themselves in shopping environments to try to understand who their new future customer is.

    Jordan, great presentation!
One of my pet peeves is parents that think they need to take their babies and toddlers everywhere they go. It’s so disrespectful to everyone else. Like people that think they need to bring their babies into the sanctuary for the church service, especially when the church has a nursery. But you handled it like a pro!
I’m from the South Carolina lowcountry outside of Charleston. But I have spent a lot of years fishing & shrimping around Beaufort. I’m sure you don’t miss the humidity from your days there!
Were you at Beaufort NAS or PI?

The discussion is interesting, but the low quality sound and video made it hard to follow. The screens were washed-out due to too much light.

Sorry, that's the best you get at conferences sometimes.
