The reason the fifth book doesn’t have a tail is because partway through printing the series the company switched to a different publisher and that one tends to have larger books overall with no tails
From France, they're like 15 euros each on Amazon, quite cheap.
They're libelled "the death collection", also, it's not a special edition.
The editor has similar jackets for hardbacks from other classical authors: that's, a collection.
It's not similar to "special" editions.
(This explain why there's no bonus content on the inside.)
Please be advised; we only beat up the boxes being sent to famous youtubers... (many thanks for your kind words!).
Oh
Are these books perfect bound or smyth sewn?
Perfect bound, unfortunately@@zippy_zap9525
Did somebody said Discworld? *appears immediately*
Can't believe the recommendation!
Discworld is my life since 2002 🐢
Yup was just thinking of rereading Guards Guards. Vimes is my favorite.
constable visit is that you
I was not so immediate, but it didn't pop up on my RUclips feed until now.
Whaaaaaat?! There are people out there who don't use the book tails when they are provided?! What's wrong with goblins these days?!
5:26 EXUSE ME SIR. Book tails are the best thing in existence.
Agreed.
Daniel also hates hufflepuffs soooo....
I use them every time I have the opportunity. Built-in bookmarks!
Daniel must be a powerful goblin indeed. He has explosions occurring next to him and is unfazed.
Hahaha. Daniel is a Shiva in disguise, don't you know?
I know he came out with maps later, but I like the idea that originally Discworld had no map because it was inherently unchartable.
Book ribbons are awesome. They make everything kind of feel like you're holding some piece of holy writ.
Yes
They are actually pretty cheap if you think about it. They are like 10 bucks apiece. I already own 4 of them and plan on expanding my collection. They just feel nice and especially for the money, are awesome
They're 66 British pounds, for us Canadians that's pretty much 100 bucks haha. They look super nice on the outside but I agree on the fact that I wish there was some bonus content on the inside to justify even if it was just a little.
Even at 100 bucks for the set though.... That's 20 bucks a book which is not terrible.
@@evanhovey2554 I suppose so =P I guess the value is really good, just a personal preference in special editions on my part lol
@@Kotsoros37 oh absolutely. :)
10 bucks is not cheap
For me its 700 rupee
I can buy 2 books with that
Daniel: I took extra steps to get these
Admit it, u ordered it from moria or mordor. Where else do goblins do deliveries
I love the Discworld hardbacks and it's my life mission to catch 'em all. I never thought these were marketed as special editions though, but just as the regular new hardbacks.
These are very much not the standard new ones, but special editions. I'm saving up this year to buy the entire set in one fell swoop (it's like ~$500). I can't wait!
@@CosmicApe oh
On the topic of maps, Sir Terry didn't like or believe in maps. When he learned fans were making maps, he tried harder to make the descriptions of streets and junctions in Ankh-Morpork more confusing, but the fans stepped up and made more maps, so he eventually gave in. All his maps were made with deliberate inconsistencies and irregularities.
I have around 15 of these, and I love them. I have bought the ones I have with the Josh Kirby covers (which are also great). First it looked like only the first half of Pratchett books would receive this treatment, before he changed publisher, but they reached some understanding and now finally all discworld is available in this series!
Regarding special contents and such: I never saw these as "special editions" like the Cosmere Leatherbound and so on. Both pricepoint and qualitywise they feel more like regular hardcover and not special editions.
Lastly, regarding maps. Pratchett did go on record and said that he disliked having maps of the Discworld. He wanted to shape the world in whatever way he seemed fit for each book and would feel limited if the world was set in stone. "You can't map a sense of comedy" and so on. I know he budged later on and released maps. But I thought that was worth pointing out.
I love these editions! I’m thinking the missing ribbon of Thief of Time might be a play on the ‘Thief’ part, as in someone stole it maybe?
They seem to have removed them in the later books, i have most of the collectors library series and in most (if not all) of the never books they are missing.
@@Camreth ah ok, still great books and great value anyway ☺️
It’s a different publishing house
I'm enjoying Daniel dedicating more content to absurdist fantasy recently, first the Pratchett's Small Gods video then One Piece and now another video about Terry Pratchett's books.
I bought those editions when I started reading Discworld and even tho I absolutely love how they look and feel on the outside, they don’t really feel like a Special Edition, more like a new hardcover edition. They also get dents super easily.
On the other side, they didn’t even cost as much as a regular hardcover (here in Germany hardcovers usually cost around 20€ and those cost me 12€ per book I think).
"there's no special content Inside" me a discworld fan.. uummm...
You're a lucky Disheveled Goblin (Seriously, I've been staring at these books on the website for the past week mourning about how I don't have the money to get them)
Also, that type of colour palette, is what we the artists refer to as, "FREAKING GORGEOUS."
I got these for Christmas as a self-gift. Beautiful editions for the price.
What the hell is that thumbnail. I thought he was gonna kill me. Goblin man..
It didn't even register in my brain that he was a goblin in the thumbnail, I just saw the video and went, "Oh there's Daniel with the library edition discworld books."
@@whiterabbit7147 You subconsciously already think of him in his true visage.
@@MagusMarquillin That actually explains quite a lot.
I like the fact that you genuinely thought you were going get murdered but still came
Thumbnail is to scoop up the prefect amount to snort from his stash of cocaine, to explain his energy. lol
"FRAGILE! HANDLE WITH CARE!"
Ah, a football! * kicks *
Been there with brutalized packages. lol.
OOH I've been slowly collecting those editions of Discworld to read!! They're soooo pretty. You can also get them off of Bookdepository if you want. My issue with them is that sometimes they'll send me all the books i ordered in different packages so instead of 1 box, I'll get like 6....
*I JUST HAD A NEAR RINCEWIND EXPERIENCE*
Favorite Quote
Agreed
that quote is just so fantastic, as it tells us everything we need to know about those characters
As Terry Pratchett said in one of his books About the Author sections (I forget which one), "there is no map" because "you cannot map a sense of humour." It just wasn't part of his worldbuilding process. When I read that, it got me even more into Discworld because not only was it one of the most rich and original settings I had read, but it seemed like Pratchett took the complete opposite approach to worldbuilding of the Tolkein/Martin standard of "build everything and use almost none of it."
Polyglob (from card) must have stolen the missing bookmark ribbon! Another great unboxing, but miss seeing unboxings using swords though.
I just finished Mort yesterday!
Thank you, Daniel.
You recommended discworld, and it’s incredible.
I got the first 8 books in this edition and I couldn’t be happier. They just look so so so beautiful. I have one issue tho, the cover can get damaged pretty easily. I threw one in my backpack and within two days there were scratches and dents. Also dont put them near the sun lmao their color will change. I still love them nonetheless and will continue buying this edition.
Wild timing, I just received the complete series from Discworld Emporium yesterday!
Dammit man, you put this out literally the day I receive all my normal edition Death books?? These look so cool.
I ordered the entire set from Discworld Emporium and my boxes looked the exact same. But the books inside were so beautiful and wonderful and I love them sooo soo soo soo much
Honestly love these editions (i have about 6 of them) and there the average price of a hardback but look amazing. Feel if they had extra special features it'd cost more...and when you have 30+ books all getting that treatment it'd become stupidly expensive for both consumer and seller
Oh, thief of time is my fav Discworld book. Lu Tze is an inspiaration!
Same!
I myself am always using these, well, tails, I absolutely love them!
I got interested in Pratchett by watching your video on interesting characters and so as for Death I ordered a hardcover book that includes Mort, Reaper Man and Soul Music - so a Death Trilogy, printed in 1994 when the author was still alive. I haven't had a chance to read it much, but I will and I love this (used) edition. I tend to be a fan of used books / older prints.
Your books seem to be beautiful as well, yes. Keep on reading! :)
Love your discworld content! Hope you put out some more of it soon, I've just finished Reaper Man and I am just amazed by its last 50 or so pages.
Been slowly buying my way through the whole series of this collection, they are fantastic.
I've loved this channel for over a year now...but the more discworld love that's melts it's way into the content really makes me smile.
Not gonna lie, I’m was very excited to see this thumb nail in my subscription feed. Pure joy
Word of warning: the textured covers do wear away very easily and develop white streaks on them. I’ve had some of the pratchett special editions before
Really enjoying the Discworld love lately. Always great to see this wonderful series appreciated
Need to have an inset separate camera view for floor view of Pips enjoying the packaging and boxes as is his proper due.
Not a special edition, a collection.
There's a difference.
It also explains why there's no special content inside.
Also, in Europe they're kind of cheap, like 15 euros each.
This collection with this kind of cover design extends to other classic authors.
The Discworld Emporium is a godsend for fans and their packaging is on-point. I guess the postal service was not really a fan tough...
I've got all my disc world books in this special edition! Not all have come out yet, but I'll deal with that when I finish the ones I already have.
Just a quick note for anyone thinking about buying them: These books easily look worn. If you read on the go, you'll be able to see it on the books very quickly. It looks kind of vintage-y and doesn't take away much from the aesthetic, but I just thought I'd add this note here as not everybody likes spending extra money on special editions just for them to look used after one read. I still love them though :)
Thanks for the vid, Daniel. I coincidentally was just looking at Discworld Emporium yesterday (before I even saw this vid). I haven't gotten in to Discworld yet, but I started the illustrated editions of Farseer and really thought I should start buying more high-quality editions. I re-thought it after discovering the City Watch set is like $300 to ship to the states, better start slower. Just wanted to mention it'd be great if you could put your special edition reviews in a playlist so they're easier to find.
Um...those "tails" are book markers. You know, so you can mark the last page read and get back to it no sweat.😁
Thank you soo much for telling me about discworld. I haven't read any books in a year or two and was looking for new books to read and i saw your video on your 2020 top 10 books. im 7 books in and i fear running out of discworld books in a year or two to read
Thief of Time has no ribbon because it is a different publishing house, they aren’t really special editions, just a revamp being printed and can be bought from book depository
Oh and you would just describe those colors as muted or desaturated, and as for how they achieved that effect it was probably a color balance adjustment layer, or just a color overlay that is partly transparent so it just sort of washes everything underneath it.
Ribbon marker is the tail. Used as a glued in bookmark so you don't lose it
Daniel is the only other map fetishist I know and I feel like he's my soulmate. I thus ask: You wanna adopt a child, Daniel?
I'm making several detailed maps for my fantasy world.
@@TheDneaves Wow that's so cool! I wanna see them. Please? * gives a cute look but fails atrociously because ugly *
We map fetishists must stick together!
Should start with opening a bar together...
I literally just started reading Reaper Man this morning.
Old battered up box with stickers = "The Luggage "
I have Small Gods of that collection. It's beautiful! 😍
on November 19th 2004 i went to the hospital because i was an idiot teenager who accidentally dropped a gamecube on my toe and let it get to the point my leg was so infected that i had a fever and had to spend 3 days on antibiotics in the hospital...
i remember 2 things from that hospital stay:
watching Eli Manning's NFL debut
and reading "Reaper Man" cover to cover amidst soaking my foot in hot water and getting woken up in the middle of the night to pee in a cup
to this day hospital jell-0 reminds me of Bill Door (Fondly : ))
Ohh I love these so much! I have all of the Gollancz/Doubleday Discworld editions standing here. So pretty and affordable. I think if there were illustrations, they would be much more expensive. Unfortunatly they tend so get faults pretty fast so be aware of that when reading or relocating them. :) Ah, and I think this is a broken color palette.
I just found out that every Discworld novel is available in these editions.
You can even get a 'bargain' (still cheaper than getting them all individually) price for all 40 novels(around 550£) probably around 1000$ CAD
Daniel - I think someone has raised your expectations around what they are. I, in Australia, can head down to my local book chain-retailer and buy those (I actually have).
Saying that I really like them but I don't think they are any sort of next level special edition.
I bought all of these that are available over the last couple of months. Literally every single Discworld book has a different color scheme to it, so they're all identifiable right from the shelf.
The reason some have the "tail" and some don't is that midway through, they switch publishers from Gollancz to DoubleDay. The Gollancz ones have the tail, the DoubleDay ones don't. I've been reading them and using the tail as a bookmark. Can confirm people exist that use them. Also, no noticeable wear after a first read, so there's that.
So far, 34 out of the 41 Discworld books are available in this format - only the Tiffany Aching books, the Amazing Maurice, and The Last Hero are not. I believe the Tiffany books and Maurice will be released by September, judging from the website.
Love these editions! They are both beautiful and easy to read!
That dramatic intro was beautiful
Damn they look cool. Just ordered these for my GF's birthday and she hasnt opened them yet until it is her birthday. Now I am looking forward to see her face glow up at how pretty the books are.
I've never even read Discworld but because these books are so nice looking and inexpensive I'm buying the special editions of Mort, and Guards! Guards!
I can't wait, I've never been this excited to read a book series.
I didn't know about these but I think I'm going to get the city watch ones!
Perfect timing!! I just put these in my cart this morning
Make sure to hold onto those Discworld stamps that came on the package. When you get to "Going Postal" they will mean more to you and you will become a philatelist. Also while i know it was a sponsored video and maybe it would be bad for to shout out another business when someone else is already giving you money for the video your making. I think(personal opinion) you could have shouted out the Discworld Emporium in the video, i know you linked it but a verbal shout out would have been cool(again personal opinion). More Pratchett fans should know about this site. It's amazing and has Terry's blessing.
If you like Maps Daniel you should look at “the complete Discworld Atlas”. Not only are you supplied with a map of the disc, but it also comes with special maps of every country and region, accompanied by original art and a summary about each country. It lovely 🎶
I have Guards! Guards! on the way to inspect the quality before ordering the rest as I'm keen to start reading Pratchett for the first time.
Luckily they are available in South Africa (we get most of our local supply from the UK), they are just special order items and thus take 3-6 weeks to arrive. I'm excited though!
I have the whole collection now! Until the new Tiffany Aching and maurice editions are released!
You can buy discworld maps I have a couple of them. But I understand what you mean about wanting inside extras in a special addition.
I recently picked up around 18 hardcovers of the Discworld series used for 1.60 each.
Included in there was 3 books on Discworld science and the companion.
"where's my maps!"
Polyglob did warn you!
You make the best book unboxing videos. Keep making more of them.
just finished Small Gods! I loved it but I solely blame Terry Pratchet for flat earthers. I mean a big government claiming the planet is round and suppressing any belief that it might not, definitely blame him lol
Thanks for turning me onto this! I have half the collection in HB, but its so hard to find a decent copy for the price. Im definitely replacing my entire collection with these! With the price point these are at, its a great deal, and have beautiful covers!
The longer you stare at the thumbnail, the more of your soul is battered into Goblin servitude. I am shook.
One thing on the covers: I can't help but think that there's a missed opportunity to have the main color of each book represent what character(s) it follows, so you could look at the books at a glance and know which went together. (this could even show how things relate by having them as similar colors, eg Wizards could be red and the Witches orange, Tiffany starts yellow and becomes more orange, the Watch are blue and Moist/industrial books are green, etc.)
I'm with you on maps, but didn't Pratchett say something like "there are no maps. You can't map a sense of humor"? (I know there are some maps, but clearly it was never a priority for him)
These books are gorgeous!! The Death arc is my favorite!!
As someone who read my parents copies of Discworld growing up, these are the editions I’ve brought to have in my own collection. Pricing wise they aren’t much different than the paperbacks (in the UK at least) so I think it makes senses.
Also I always like the early cluttered cartoon covers more than the later more simplistic ones, so having a collection that fully matches makes me happy 😃
I think the some with tails some without is that the later books have a different publisher and the decided to remove the tails!
I have the first 4 of these (Mort, Reaper Man, Hogfather and Soul Music) and they are really nice editions. FYI, I used to work in the Production department for a publisher, the technical term for what you call book tails is “ribbon markers” 🙂 As to why Thief of Time doesn’t have one, the later books in the collector’s series were produced by a different publisher, and they probably didn’t want the extra costs that ribbon markers (and the required head and tail bands to go with it) incur
I think it is worth mentioning how incredibly reasonably priced those books are. A five book run of special editions from a well known author could certainly be priced at twice that and sell. I'm OK with less than top quality if it means I can afford to buy a set of special editions for my sister with kids to read em to... Even my hard covered harry potter books cost too much to be kid approved, and those aint special editions.
Maybe books are just more expensive in Canada? idk.
The tail is called ribbon bookmark, there is another name for them too but can not think of it right now, and I use them.
It's the same edition I have
When we are still on the subject of Discworld, I will inadvertently think of The Wheel and Time and which of these toe series is the longest. You are a super nerd and should have an answer to this.
Give me, give me now (this last can very easily be read with an Austrian accent)
And I think the color towers you are thinking of are Pastel
I've just realised what those editions are... They're very available all over England. Every time I go back and to Waterstones, they're there. They're so beautiful 😭😭😭
I LOVE mine!! Slowly collecting. Only have beat-up, old pocket versions. Got some for myself for christmas! 📚
Haven’t read discworld yet but damn those books are pretty
Did you use the Rite of AshkEnte to summon me here again?! Good job you are my favourite dishevelled goblin ☠
I think he is my favorite interpretation of death in any medium.
I almost never buy hardbacks but I do have these.
They're the same price as most UK hardbacks so it's very reasonable. US regular hardbacks are more expensive, so to me it's well worth the price.
I love your videos. I used to read quite a lot before university but over the past 10 years life kind of got in the way. These videos renewed my love of reading.
I do have a quick question (and I’m sorry if it’s not polite to ask about other you tubers) but is there anyone you recommend that covers more sci-fi reviews? I like both fantasy and sci-fi but your love of books clearly leans a bit more towards fantasy :) Thanks!
I can't believe that you haven't made a review for The Watch TV show yet.
I've heard of some fans not liking the design, but I just *love* this edition. Plus it's in hardback and quite the bargain for the overall quality of content and presentation in my opinion. Got the whole set over the pandemic and they've got pride of place on my shelves. Already got the Tiffany Aching books pre-ordered too!
I've always been a big fan of the cartoony covers Discworld has had. But these are also really nice, and I actually prefer them. Too bad prices for UK stuff have skyrocketed...
These special edition reviews are great!
I wasn't that interested when I clicked, but watched all the way through!
1:28 damn daniel really did campfire like that. The plot thickens
I'm so jealous, you're a true bastard wagging your special editions in our faces! LoL!
that fragile sticker is ironic
As someone who's just been getting into discworld and own Guards! Guards! to begin my journey with
When ever I decide to read the death series, I'll save up money to own these copies, those are so *pretty!*
the maps you gotta buy seperate, i have 6 maps, 2 new and 4 older ones
I have a few of these but when I got them I didn't apreciate the covers and kept them in a bag sometimes and now some of them are a bashed up and I'm legit crying
Get all these editions
From what I remember, some have 'book tails' and some don't because a different publisher took over making them. Originally, I don't think they were planning on printing the whole discworld series. And I would say that these are intended as alternative editions rather than special editions. I almost have them all 🐢
