I always thought 'Matthew & Son' - one of his mid-60s chart hits - was pretty exceptional, both for its musical form and subject matter. Interestingly, it proved quite influential in the longer term. Echo and The Bunnymen's frontman, Ian McCulloch, asked the musician playing the intro to their single, 'The Cutter' to improvise something based on part of the song, while Tears For Fears 'appropriated' another section of it for their song 'Mad World' - which Stevens would himself highlight, by singing some of its lyrics while performing 'Matthew & Son', in his later concert appearances.

Absolutely my favorite film! “Harold and Maude” just edges out “Brother Sun and Sister Moon” that had Donovan’s music.
Do more music from them and react to them!

Have a soft spot for Cat Stevens as it’s what my dad would listen to on our family car trips as a kid.
Dad is still alive, but we don’t often do the family trips etc now
He’s got so many good songs 😄 “Sitting” is a personal favourite

Thank you for another song from the man who helped change my thinking. This is one of the songs from the soundtrack of the cult classic HAROLD & MAUDE starring Ruth Gordon and Bud Cory. All music is by Cat. I hope someday you’ll see it. You won’t be disappointed. Peace

3 awesome songs tonight!!! This is one of the greatest Cat Steven's songs. He was one of the top beloved singer songwriters for sure. And as others said Harold and Maude was a beloved movie by the youth of the day. My favorite song by Cat Steven's is Hard Headed Woman.

Father and Son - Cat Stevens
This is one of Yusuf''s most meaningful songs. It is a conversation between a father and his son as they grow throughout their years, the father gives advice and the son rejects it. The son needs to break away from the family and the father does not understand why. It reminds us that we all have our parts as parents and children and eventually the roles are reversed when the son becomes a father facing his own son's rejection.

My favorite CS song. The way he backed up the father's lines with the son's and the son's with the father in the background was brilliant!

An environmental song way before anyone in music beside the late great John Denver ever gave notice to environmental issues. This song "Where Do The Children Play" came out of his great album "Tea For The Tillerman in (1971)." It also had another great song title "Father And Son." Brilliant!

Great song, early Cat Steven’s albums were eagerly devoured by me as a teenager, I’m now 68 and still listening to him. My personal favourite song was always “Lady D'Arbanville”. The song was from his 3rd album released from Mona Bone Jakon and was a change in style towards folk rock. However it builds stunningly and is on of the best break up songs ever in my opinion, his break up with the American model-actress Patti D’Arbanville. You should check it out. Very powerful and very poetic.

Amazing you mentioned Jim Croce, because he had a very important sidekick, his second guitar player Maurice Muehleisen, just like Cat Stevens had Alun Davis. That one two punch is what gives the acoustic guitars, and the songs their undeniable power. 'Sad Lisa' and 'Into White' from Tea For The Tillerman are must listens, BUT 'If I Laugh' is for me his most underrated masterpiece...that one is from 'Teaser and the Firecat'. Also, 'Oh Very Young' and 'C-79' from Buddha and the Chocolate Box' are extraordinary.
