I found inspiration! Instead of trying to play TF2 on a team, I want to go back to my roots which is trying to grow comp TF2 into a legit esport. I feel like creating content like this is one of the best ways I can contribute and give back to the community!
Thank you mrslin for making this video! I'll definitely take up your tips! Also this video also doubles as a great life lesson. Make a brand for yourself when looking for work / placement. Increase your chance of getting picked up :)
Hey Slin, the reason I am asking these questions is because watching a video way back by Uncle Dane talking about the official competitive mode made me (Who back then mains Heavy and hates the 6s format) think that 6v6 is a better game mode to center competitive around than Highlander. But he also speaks on how other game modes other than 5CP (Payload, Attack and Defend, KoTH) should be added to break the 6s meta, allowing more classes to be viable and attract more people to play Competitive. Thus, bridging the gap between Casual and Competitive TF2. So I have a few questions on a comp player's perspective on bridging the gap. 1) In your opinion, what is the main reason that is holding back Casual players from playing Competitive besides just wanting to enjoy the Casual game? (Assuming Valve gets their sh*t together and adds everything competitive mode needs i.e. Placement Matches, Elo ranking, a better anti-cheat system, class limits and many more.) 2) I understand the appeal of fast, exciting gameplay in the current format of 6v6, but is the exclusion of more than half of the classes in unofficial 6v6 the reason why many players do not wish to play competitive? The 5 "Specialist" classes in this current format are only run in a minuscule part of the match, or not at all. Does this ruin the appeal to people who enjoy playing the other 5 "Specialist" classes knowing their favorite class is not run at all? The same can be said for why would a Spy main enjoy Mann vs Machine. In fact, why would Spy mains like MvM or 6s? They are not part of both metas at all. 3) Do you think the 6s meta (2 Soldiers, 2 Scouts, a Demo and a Medic) will still be the best lineup if other game modes like Payload and Attack and Defend are added to Competitive? 4) Where does pick/ban 7s stand in the best to worst formats of Competitive TF2 and could that be the answer to bridging the gap between Casual and Competitive? I have 2100+ hours in TF2 playing since mid-2013. I main Heavy and played a few Highlander matches as a stand-in, hates 5CP, and hopes TF2 will have its own "The International". Thanks, Slin!
So many questions! This is a lot to break down but I saw some of these questions separated out from other people and will try to address them all in time
Great video! My question which I hope you could talk about is this: When wanting to become a team leader in competitive TF2, should you focus on the dm and skill aspect in order to lead by being the best player, or communication and becoming the "highest IQ" guy on the team? As a team captain, should I focus on getting the best individuals, or just the best fit?
Slin if you read this even after 2 years I want to thank you for this guide. This guide got me in a team in etf2l open and maybe next season we are getting to low :D This video is a huge help for new players with an realistic scenario.Just want to tell you got at least a new player in the competitive scene
Also a great tip for newcomers. If you are really struggling to find a team, you can always make a team of your own. There are more players looking for teams than teams looking for players. Discord channel is free, all you have to do is get a server and nice, fun people playing with you.
aim and movement ability, and decision making and game knowledge. it's difficult to make a step up to IM or Invite without all these things being top of the line
How do I leap from a high open medic to and IM medic. I’ve played the game for 2.5k hours and came 1st and 3rd in Ozf open and am looking to make the leap into the intermediate division
i just want to ask, if im in a team and we play a tournament or what ever teams play (im really new to this stuff) do we play at our home? i know its a stupid question but i never knew that, i always thought that if you need to play a mtch vs. a team that you go to like a internet cafe or something. so. do we stay home when we play matches?
what can I do if I play tf2 on garden vegetables of a computer and cannot even run most of the maps, is there any hopes for me? expecially for competitve? also, whenever I try competitve (just normal competitve in tf2) all my commands that increase fps is disabled, like removing gibs and all that. Do you have a solution?
this is a little late, but I joined an RGL amateur team, and none of us are experienced. will it hurt my ability to play on a team that could potentially be practicing bad habits? How can I break those bad habits?
hey mr slin, ive only ever played casual in my 1500 hours of playing and i wanna get into 6s but i cant seem to find any comp websites that dont require you to talk, so do you know any 6s websites without the requirement to talk?
Tf2center Also if you want to get serious in the comp scene you gotta step up and use a mic, if you're embarrassed of your voice GET OVER IT, it will be hard at first but you'll get used to it, good luck
I've got 4200+ hours, around rank 700 as a soldier on Tempus, and 200+ tc tours. Would I be considered a potential "good player"? I'm thinking about getting into the comp scene soon, but I don't know what else I should try to go for.
i have a competitive pass from the mann co store and uhh.... idk what to do i only think that its like casual where i queue and join a server.....what do i do to play maybe a single game....and i dont have a team.......
I think I read somewhere that your FPS should ideally be at least double that of your monitor refresh rate. So if you're at 75hz, you should try to get 150+ at all times. If you go to 144hz, ideally your computer can handle a solid 288 FPS but I know that my old computer went down to 120-150 in teamfights and it was still worth it to have the better monitor. I look at it as an investment for the my passion for gaming, and long-term you're going to want at least 120hz. Try to find something cost effective.
Still worth if you can afford it, otherwise don't worry much about it. You can get a quality 144hz for like $200 or so if you shop around or buy used. I used the ASUS VG248QE for years and would recommend.
It's no wonder why the competitive tf2 scene feels so distant and closed off to pubbers if this is the kind of environment they are first introduced to.
Dear Slin, Hi, I'm in a similar boat to Islarf. I'm very, very new to comp tf2 and i'm struggling to break into it. The main problem is whenever i play in a pug I always get "roamer (my main) what the f**k are you doing?!?!?!" when the truth is, i don't really know what I'm doing. Another situation is where we will fail a push/hold and the whole team agrees it was my fault and i have no idea what I did wrong. Slin, I need to git gud. But i'm struggling due to the low number of players on tf2centre that are willing to give up their time on their Sunday afternoon or whenever to help me. I feel like i'm not improving . I would like some help on how to actually playing the gosh darn game. What do I do? Many Thanks, A tormented roamer
Another thing you can do is watch POVs of other roamers playing. See what they do in different situations and you will have a better understanding of when to go in and when to hold and where etc.
+CANDYINACAN Highlander is a form of competitive TF2 with 9 players on each team. Each class in the game must be played so there would be only 1 scout, 1 soldier, 1 pyro, 1 demo, etc. per team

wait on your rockets, find good openings(like when no one on the enemy team is looking at you, bomb them), etc. also decide when you have to bomb. sometimes its worth more if you just spam midrange rockets, take high ground, or distract the other team.
mfw MR SLIN made me work harder on my TF2 career than I do on my real career
MR SLIN slin can i add you to talk some stuff about SA comp?
Message me on Twitter or Discord!
MR SLIN y do u look like Ryan Higa + Ricegum
Hey MR SLIN! How much experience i need to have before trying competitive? Is casual a good way to get better at tf2 ?
tfw slin is teaching us how to rob competitive tf2's house
What is happening? We went from almost no videos to one every day :o

~4000 hours, 7 seasons of prior competitive experience with one season being 1st place. Cannot find a team 😂
Thanks for the insight slin, keep up the vids!

I hope tf2 survive for the next 10 year lol
almost halfway there
Slin if you read this even after 2 years

JESUS I got 3,000 hours and I haven't even gotten close to Competitive. This video helped a LOT though Slin! Thanks!!
Damn slin! You just made me motivated to get the ball rolling
Oh boy MR SLIM at 2 in the morning
You have the kind of videos I desperately need for CSGO.
mr slin - "JUST DO IT"
rktking lol

mfw MR SLIN talks about scrimming 5 days a week like it's nothing ;-;
3:08 "what do you think or MRSLIN?" Literally deep throating a fucking banana
3k hours and i still havnt found a team kek
DestructoDash you’ve got this! I believe in you :)
Hey slin, what do you think separates a good open player from an IM player, and then an Invite player? - from Olbap
aim and movement ability, and decision making and game knowledge. it's difficult to make a step up to IM or Invite without all these things being top of the line
Games sense so like decision making and map knowledge, stuff that takes time to learn and can’t necessarily be taught
For competitive tf2, how much practise is enough?
Well, do it during night time.
Make sure you understand the guard rotations, and the security systems.
Work around them, and don’t make much noise.
How do I leap from a high open medic to and IM medic. I’ve played the game for 2.5k hours and came 1st and 3rd in Ozf open and am looking to make the leap into the intermediate division

i have a question, can i have a HD copy of the banana eating bloke photo?

Sorry if you already said this but you can start getting noticed and better in tf2center?
How did you know about jetpack before update 8 months ago? You said this in your pyro video
this is a little late, but I joined an RGL amateur team, and none of us are experienced. will it hurt my ability to play on a team that could potentially be practicing bad habits? How can I break those bad habits?

Do you think the matchmaking update won't suck? Again?
I have never played any comp so all of this is jiberish to me, but I was hoping to do something different than casual since I have about 1255 hours
How much adjustment would be needed for the Pyro to be useful in 6s?
i have a competitive pass from the mann co store and uhh.... idk what to do i only think that its like casual where i queue and join a server.....what do i do to play maybe a single game....and i dont have a team.......
Do you think 2000 hours is enough to start playing 6s? I played some highlander but the few matches I played had more losses than wins.
Then start playing some 6xs
the forum is no longer available on the ugc website, where do I go if im LFP?
Mr.slin I know you made a video on changing your crosshair but do you how to make your own crosshairs
johan Martinez I do but it’s super complicated and not worth the effort IMO
Hey Slin, I play TF2 on a 75hz monitor and my fps is above 100+ Do you think I'm missing alot by not using 144hz? Thanks!
I think I read somewhere that your FPS should ideally be at least double that of your monitor refresh rate. So if you're at 75hz, you should try to get 150+ at all times. yup, you gotta do a lot of research just to get started lol
probably easier to get in if you have connections to people already playing comp tho
I want to join a team but every one I get into dies, also I can’t stay up too late for match’s bc high school. Wha do I do.
Lol i saw my recruitment on on the etf2l page
If you've been out of the game for a long time, is it worth coming back, will your skills still be their or will you need to relearn
Angus pro yeah it’s like riding a bike, you’ll be fine!
MR SLIN but you also talked about your business, your reputation, does that need to be restarted.
Also, click bait title with ow in it XDXD
...no, I have never played or tried ow, and haven't really been doing any gaming recently
Yo is this Dong Huap for TF2?
Man i 2 tricked akali and aatrox and both get reworked. Haven't played lol since then
It's about time someone made this video. But if you are not the first to make it, than thanks for doing so anyway.
Dear Slin,
Hi, I'm in a similar boat to Islarf. I'm very, very new to comp tf2 and i'm struggling to break into it. Try asking the people and telling them "Hey, sorry, I'm new, what would have been a better thing to do in that situation?"
Another thing you can do is watch POVs of other roamers playing. See what they do in different situations and you will have a better understanding of when to go in and when to hold and where etc.
Wow
Mr slin, can you help out by showing all of the best rollouts
yo here's a site with rollouts for al the classes and for most of the maps.
rollout.tf
What is Highlander I've been playing tf2 for about 4 months and don't know what Highlander is
+CANDYINACAN Highlander is a form of competitive TF2 with 9 players on each team. Each class in the game must be played so there would be only 1 scout, 1 soldier, 1 pyro, 1 demo, etc. per team
Slin, how do I
win against opponents with superior dm?
Outplay them with positioning and plays. Theres this guy in Faceit that has great DM, but has no idea where to be, and just dies all the time.
Do you still play TF2 and if you quit, why?
When I quit TF2 or take a break from the game, I usually go cold turkey. I play a bunch of other games that I missed when I was being a hardcore TF2 player, like Super Mario Odyssey, WoW, or LoL, then come back. I usually don't feel like I've lost too much game knowledge or DM.
How do I, as a Roamer, make the most out of my bombs?
wait on your rockets, find good openings(like when no one on the enemy team is looking at you, bomb them), etc.
also decide when you have to bomb. sometimes its worth more if you just spam midrange rockets, take high ground, or distract the other team.
Go deep and distract or wait for the other team to not expect it
rktking lul
Am I kid and I want to get in tf2 comp
slin was such a gem for tf2
I've had this "brand" idea for a while, does anyone here know me?
Lava I do!! You want to help grow TF2 :D
I do I do. What can I do to help the most?
Yeah that's my question, what can I do to really help out the community? :)
its funny how you dont even mention hl
Victor Glyrskov I don’t see HL as the future of comp TF2 but many of the videos I make apply to other game modes if that’s what you’re interested in
can someone tryout me for a team? i main scout and i have around 800 hours on tf2 on all my acc im eu
How do you play pugs? In Europe?
I not got this
