What you are saying about about discipline is true, but I believe there are three other factor that lead to success. Discipline won't get you to first place but it is the most important part to success. 1. Controlling your emotions. This will Prevent you from choking in high pressure situations. Making the right decisions under pressure. Improve consistency. Help with discipline. Have courage without arrogance and cockiness. 2. Going out and doing it. You can practice forever and have the best DM/skills. However if you are afraid of failure or judgement, you might not even take the first step. This applies more for business and competitions were not everyone can be the winner and there is a far higher chance of failure than success. Also keep going after a huge failure or embarrassment in front of a huge crowd, this is how you overcome unluckiness and failure. The more you try the more likely you are to succeed. 3. Work smarter not just harder. If you work and practice for hours a day but constantly make the same mistakes or don't try anything new to improve. You will get to a point where a guy has put in less hours than you but is better than you.
This series is very similar to Thoorin's Thoorin's thoughts series, I like it, If you turn this into a news series aswell your channel is bound to grow, +MR SLIN if you make a few episodes on TF2 community news im sure youll get more attention, otherwise this is a great series anyway
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. Your argument about "overcoming" genetics isn't valid when people who are naturally good are working hard too. Time is not everything, you and YZ50 are both not differentiating between good practice and bad practice. Even if you play 5 hours of DM every day most people won't become YZ50. You have to practise in a much more specific way, or have natural ability to get to that level. There is way more to it than just sticking to the "time" component of your practice.
Competing in any game/competition isn't about learning set things though. It's about being better than the rest, learning them faster or better or being able to implement them in a better way. Everything you do is compared to others who may be practising better, have more natural ability or, yes, work harder. However telling somebody that they can be as good as top players simply by putting in the time is simply not true. There is far more to it than that. You're competing against others remember, not just trying to learn a set amount of facts!
You're thinking about it wrong. Being "5th best" for example is a huge achievement, it means you've beaten (using TF2 context) thousands of other players to that spot. If your only goal is to get better then any amount of practise will work, your only objective is to not actively get worse. It's not a difficult objective. There are no markers other than your own worse past self. Different people have different goals and of course simply improving slowly can be a goal if you don't want to take things as seriously or just want to play for fun. But in the context we're talking about here where there are people genuinely trying to be the best because it is a competition, simply measuring yourself and your improvement without comparing it to others will never lead to the kind of success that is rewarding for all that time and effort you put in (success being defined as being in a top position within the scene or being at a level where you're recognised for your talent, making money, winning championships etc). If your only marker of success is being better than you were before then you only need to put in a tiny amount of work to "succeed". But you're also going to be irrelevant to the discussion of those people who are (or were) truly great e.g. YZ50, b4nny, these people he mentions as having achieved something in the wider context of TF2.
+Sideshow talent just takes you to where you want to be faster. If a talented player practice five hours a day and reach godlike mechanics in a year, a normal player obviously wouldn't be able to achieve the same in the same amount of time. But does that mean that he won't get there? Of course not. You may spend twice or thrice the amount of time to get to where he's at but you'll still get there. And that's the point.
+OneInchPunchR This simply isn't true, it's wishful thinking. You think if I worked forever I could be as good as Kobe Bryant? Or run as fast as Usain bolt? These are fantasies, there are thousands of people that put in as much or even more work than those people, but will never reach their level. Don't kid yourself, live in the real world.

before you get your robo hand, ask yourself if you're planning on making any robotic turrets in the near or far future. your robo hand will prevent you from making larger turrets
Um. at 2:49, I've heard the precise opposite. That a top team would only pick up someone with innate cohesion and gamesense or whatever, because while DM is capable of being picked up in the way you described, it's impossible to teach cohesion.
Hey, thanks Slin. You actually cleared up a lot more than just TF2 with this video for me! I'm a little afraid I've grown stubborn and lost my ability to think or learn from my mistakes, but with that idea, of thinking about your long-term rather than short-term, I might be able to finally get a hold of my shit. So, thanks. Really. (Also, I wonder what the equivalent of DM would be for sniper)
So true, I learned many, many strategies and tactics for cp_badlands, watched over 100 videos on it, and every life (with scout), I could get behind the med, I could bait someone, I could do pretty much whatever I wanted, except aim :P. When I got into that position, I would just miss my shots and die. That's why learning the core mechanics of tf2 is importand.

I think discipline is more important than time. I have 900 hrs in tf2 and I managed to get good enough to get into mid (sure, im still pretty shit, but im decent enough to handle other mid players). the point is that I don't have much time to play, but by playng mge/dm 24/7 and getting destroyed over and over and over without ever giving up is more important than playng tf2 all the goddamn day imo. but I understand that to never have fun one's got to really love/be addicted to that game. not everyone is willing to do the same, I just took it like a barney stinson challenge, when like the shittest open players called me bad and made fun of me I just kept repeating "challenge accepted"...
spuddy bud to do what he said, go to your autoexec.cfg, change the file extension to .txt to open it in notepad, type in bind "your key" mouse2. After that change the file extension back to .cfg and run the game.

I like to lay medic but I have a small finger twitch so I pop ubers at inappropriate times. What do I do?
+spuddy bud You could change the keybind for uber charge from right-click to something that you won't accidentally press.
spuddy bud to do what he said, go to your autoexec.cfg, change the file extension to .txt to open it in notepad, type in bind "your key" mouse2. "Your key" being whatever button yoy want to press to pop ubers. However this will switch over all mouse2 functions to this button such as airblasting.
