I think the penguin is supposed to be an ice skating aid for children. We have them here, where children hold on to the back to keep them upright and give them more confidence on the ice.
Gotta love that Ice Planet reference with the Grandpa: Not only the logo, but the colours of the gloves, sleeves and waist match the colours of the suits worn by the Ice Planet astronauts, with the Ushanka being bright orange to channel the orange visor the astronauts had on their helmets. Plus, one of the Ice Planet characters was an older man with a large moustache, so it even matches there!
I'm a big fan of the theme from the beginning. Lego puts way more love and production budget into those CNY sets than into most of their other sets. This one is a lovely display piece and has great play value too. Considering you get 13 minifigures, a huge amount of very useful new parts, penguin and ice penguin, I'm tempted to say in the world of Lego this set is reasonably priced.
Did the Lego designers intentionally include a Perry sled? Surely they know
“A PERRY the platypus sled?!?!”
12:46
I know it’s a penguin, but I cannot unsee a certain egg-laying mammal of action in that build.
Ice Planet and Perry the platypus? Sign me up!
the hat is called an "ushanka", always a fun thing to know :)
Looks like a teal coloured...platypus. Poor Perry lost his hat
Oh! Here you are Perry! Lovely set!
A bobsled? Perry the bobsled? Perry the Platypus?!?
I really love this set -and even think that it has one of the best values for money I have seen from Lego in the last few years.
The little sled thing is literally perry the platypus!
No wait it is a perfectly normal platypus
But with a fedora....
Pretty much has to be an ice planet reference given the blue legs/hands + the black torso and white arms. The old fisherman even has a face that looks like a bit of a reference to the OG white mustache guy from Ice Planet. definitely a fun little throwback. Plus his hat is orange and the other color in the Ice Planet palette was trans orange.
The selling point for me is the amazing opalescent parts that make up the ice.
One of the best set Lego made in recent times - great review as always!
The middle torso on the second three minifigures came in the Hogsmede Harry Potter set - Dean Thomas
Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate the occasion! Amazing looking set, with a lot of cool details! I really love the frozen water for the ice rink
A platypus sled? Perry the platypus sled!
$120 is a lot, but environments are my favorite LEGO thing (Creator 3-in-1 buildings, Mos Eisley Cantina, etc.) and I love the Chinese Traditional sets. Admittedly, this is not as good as 80104 Lion Dance and 80105 New Year Temple Fair, which make a glorious display when combined, but this is still pretty great! (and no stickers!)
Imagine if this was a comparable STAR WARS ‘Hoth Ice Rebel Outpost’ set…it’d cost 200$ minimum!! 😳🤑
Great vid as always Jang, thanks for all of your wonderful content!
Great set for winter time in any LEGO city, like the xtra hockey stuff, good for the sports fans to recreate some very Canadian winters haha
Nice review! 🙂
1:34 No, I got one of those torsos, so can't be. It was part of "Dean Thomas" in the Hogsmeade Village last year.
Mmm! Steamed Yams! (It's an Albany expression)
12:46 It’s Perry the Platypus lol
All it needs is a fedora!
i honestly bought this set, cause it came with a lot of good hair pieces and a lot of those translucent panels
Heyy is that perry the platypus
I think the torso on the kid in the red set was used in one of the Harry Potter sets. I love this set.
I'm excited to watch this, even though I bought it day 1. I was skeptical when it was revealed, but when I saw it in the Lego store this weekend, it looked fantastic! Glad I won't regret my purchase.
Jang, do you document your upcoming reviews anywhere? It would be good to know, for example, which 2022 sets you are planning on reviewing in the near future.
12:46 PERRY THE PLATYPUS!?!
Amazing set, I think it's worth it in my book. So much play value!!!
Yes Jang 👍🤗🤩 tomora I hope to put this set on lay buy.
that penguin sled reminds me a platypus
That sled I can't help but see Perry the platypus
haha, nice review. Its baked yam, not steamed, very popular in the winter in beijing. and i like to point out, its the chinese character 春 on top of the arch, which means spring. in chinese, the lunar new year is called spring festival, the celebration of spring coming
In Australia, this set retails for $150 and is sold everywhere so 20% off is constantly available. The brick built trans blue symbol above the arch is a Chinese character meaning “spring” for the spring festival.
"A penguin ice sled...?"
(puts on fedora)
"PERRY THE PENGUIN ICE SLED?!?!"
The “push along sled 🛷” reminds me of Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb
Excellent review. The sign at 2:40 says xue (snow). The sign at 3:24 says hua bing xie chu zu (skate rentals). 3:58 is the character for Spring because “Chinese New Year” is really called “Spring Festival” in Mandarin. The food at 4:32 are baked sweet potatoes. They are often baked as street food in a big drum like that.
Oh it’s just a normal platypus sled.
*sled puts on fedora*
PERRY THE PLATYPUS SLED!?!?
"PERRY THE PLATYPUS?! What are you doing here disguised as a sled?"
I really like that Ice Planet torso
Great minifigures and some awesome pieces
Looks good value to me ☺
Enjoyable video as always 👍
2:26
that hat is called a ushanka 🙌
great video and review as always^^
Unlike the police station, school and hospital, that all cut way too many corners, this is wonderful! Very creative and well thought-out. I am impressed. Although I am not into the Chinese new year, I really love this set. And for that reason, I don't mind the price... 😍😍😍 Thanks for your review.
For me, the impressive count of mini figs and the cool new pieces make it worth the price. Plus I am so used to super over priced Star Wars Lego that this feels like a bargain in comparison!
Absolutely love this set & how much detail is in it xx The plates to do the ice look amazing when you place them xxx As a Ninjago fan these are my favourite annual set to mix in with the Ninjago buildings xxx
Hey jang ! Great review as always !
9:27 That area looks amazing, so many details like from some MOC. Thanks for the review, I'll have to settle for your video since that set is too expensive for me.
Loved the Set and the Review !!!
The sleigh looks more like Perry The Platypus instead of penguin 😂😂
I honestly want just the environment itself…
Love the Lunar New Year theme. I bought this for the minifigs and ability to convert this into my holiday winter village.
I love this set so much!
Thanks for your review, much appreciated!
Just a small remark: the set is sold for EUR 99.99, at least in Germany.
Hey Jang,
Chinese Word Translation:
春 = Spring which means Spring Festival / Chinese New Year (Middle trans-light blue bricks word)
雪 = Snow (lantern word)
滑冰鞋 = ice skates shoes (rental sign)
出租 = for rental (rental sign)
虎 = tiger which represent Chinese New Year zodiac animal, 2022 is tiger year (panel sign word)
Compared to how much most of the lego city sets cost, like $120 for the hospital at less than 900 pieces or the beach for a little over 200 pieces for $40, this set is worth the money for the little over 1,500 pieces.
Got it. Here in Australia you can get this set for $120 from Kmart which works out to be currently around $85 USD. Finally a relatively cheap set for us Australian's.😀👍🇦🇺
A penguin? PERRY THE PENGUIN?!
A very lovely set.
I bought this on clearance, gonna assemble it soon
Awesome lego Chinese New Year sets!
As awesome this set looks, I have to agree with Jang regarding the value. Just because the price-to-parts ratio looks great doesn't mean one would be comfortable forking out so much money for a Lego display. That said, the minifigs add a lot to the overall feeling of abundance, and the build itself also looks like a good backdrop for winter displays in general.
“A penguin?”
*puts on a hat*
“PERRY THE PENGUIN??!!!??”
I do agree with the price not being the best on this one. I got the spring latern festival set and it significantly feels like a better purchase over this one.
I'll still get this regardless probably on a double vip.
Its a beautiful set!
It's still weird to me how the major Chinese New Year sets are at $120 compared the £90 in the UK; I'd say $100 would be about right, despite how many figures and pieces (mostly small) it already has. Beautiful set as always, they're still yet to disappoint.
wow i didnt realize i wanted this set so bad. as always what a great review thanks jang!
whenever I see the sled I keep thinking of perry the platipus
Dam only if Lego could make the glass panels. As one big peace .shapet around the out side to fit into the ice skating ring.
I was just thinking that you will post a lunar new year set soon!!!
I’m so excited to buy this set, thank you for the fantastic review as always Jang :)
Hey Jang, the set is only € 99,99 in Germany. Just ordered it a few days ago.
As a proud Year of the Tiger, I had to get all of these sets, lol. I even got the Jasmine set for the Tiger it has.
I had an easier time justifying last years big Lunar New Year set, because that added an awesome park to my city. There are some great minifig parts here, and great parts in general, but I don't think that's gonna be enough to push me into buying this one. I do really like it, would've been awesome if it could've been designed to extend the park from last year.
Looks pretty sweet
Ahh perry the platypus
Euro price is wrong, it is actually 99,99€ in Germany and 109,99€ in some other countries...
i love this set and I don't regret my purchase !
The penguin looks more like Perry the Platypus
And I just noticed that “penguin” looks way to close to perry the platypus lol
It’s € 99,99 in The Netherlands. Awesome set!
very cool, thanks for the review Jang. I might pass on this one, but still looks great
*The Ice Planet 2002 torso is my most wanted piece of the set, i think you can make a custom Ice Planet fig with a space tank, a helmet and Aaron's visor from Nexo Knights in neon orange.*
I already bought this but I haven't built it yet. This looks even better than I expected.
The year of the tiger, but without a pink 1 stud flower piece?
What is the footprint on this set ? Is it 32 x 48 like the 80107 ?
As much as I don't want to pay retail for this I like the idea a lot better than paying the secondary market price after retirement, which is basically the only other option with the Chinese New year sets, so retail it is. It is a beautiful set so it's not an unacceptable price, particularly if you can get it when Lego have a free promotional set deal on. 🙂
I was hoping it was going to some how plug into the last years modular park for the Ox. Still looks cool though.
I’m so torn. I agree it should be cheaper, but I also really love the set so I’m tempted to just buy it. LEGO really has us in their clutches don’t they.
I think the boys puffer jacket is the same as Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter Hogsmead Set?
The Price in Germany is actually 99,99€ and Not 149,99€ just to let you know!
Why does the little ice sled car thing look like parry the platypus?
Out of curiosity, what's a set that cost the same price as this that you feel is worth the cost?
I know that ice sled is supposed to be a penguin but all I see is Perry the Platypus
The new color for the 1x6x5 panel looks amazing
I do actually think this set is worth it. I can't think of any other set that comes with this many minifigures that isn't a MBS Star Wars set, or a huge Ninjago city set.
Great review, and yes slightly overpriced. I mean it is 48 bucks worth of just Mini-Figures, true, but then do we see another 72 bucks worth of stuff? Hmm. I say, 110 USD would be ok. But wow, gorgeous set! Love the trans clear and blue bricks, and the amazing ice surface and fish underneath. "Cool." Haha! See what I did there? Uh ok I'll show m'self out.
Perry the Platypus sled
13:02 PERRY THE PLATYPUS SLED???
I just want to point this out but at 14:24 the euro price is actually 99.99€ instead of 149.99€
