Sumiko, a neighbor who lost her own family in an air raid, scolds Koichi, calling him "shameless" for returning to Tokyo without completing his mission as a kamikaze pilot. She then vented her hatred, saying, ``My children died because the soldiers and the military did not do their duty.''
However, in the second half of the movie, Sumiko learns that Koichi is willing to die to fight Godzilla, and she begins to want Koichi to live. In the first half, she hits Koichi out of hatred, but in the final scene when she hits Koichi again, her reaction is the exact opposite of what she did at the beginning: she was happy that Koichi was alive.
This scene was very symbolic and fascinating in terms of character development. This was also the same way the mechanic Tachibana treated Koichi. A fight for survival and for the future. The flow of the story was great.

This felt like how 80s action adventure films felt. It had a real Spielberg vibe to it

Maybe not the ONLY reason but I think definitely ONE of the reasons this movie is so good is that it is not even really ABOUT THE MONSTER. It is much more about the CHARACTERS and there are COMPELLING STORY ARCS. The main character undergoes a "hero's journey" of sorts as he starts out a cowardly failed pilot and goes through a personal crisis leading to him redeeming himself and becoming a hero by the end of the movie.
And there is so much GOOD MORALITY and HUMAN BONDING in the story. It was touching how that other lady was determined to take care of the baby even though she was not the mother (not related at all) and the main character just basically takes care of her and the baby because he is too kind to kick them out. Even that neighbor lady was jaded and said she wanted no part in raising some random baby but her heart softened and she kind of became an honorary aunt.
And the comraderie between the main character and the crew on that mine sweeper boat was well developed as was the compelling emotional scenes of the people banding together to defeat Godzilla. It was much more ABOUT THE PEOPLE than it was about the creature.
To many giant monster movies are ABOUT THE MONSTER and the human characters are portrayed by 3rd rate generic actors with really generic lines and there is not much of a compelling story for them.

I get your point, but I have a hard time calling someone facing certain death who declines to sacrifice their life for a lost cause "cowardly". The Kamikazes were a desperate last attempt to delay what was already inevitable. Japan had lost, but it was a matter of how many more lives they were willing to sacrifice before they admitted defeat. It's also not mentioned that most Kamikaze pilot were very young, ranging from 16-18, with their whole lives in front of them. They were not trained to be warriors, they were suicide bombers, plain and simple. They were just scared kids, indoctrinated in a twisted sense of honor, being tossed on the ash heap of history by their government.

This movie is not a Godzilla film in the sense that the Cinematography, Directing, Storyline and Music work so well in harmony. It is a beautiful movie with connecting characters and every once in a while there's a special appearance by Godzilla and it doesn't ruin the human story and the beauty of this movie. Don't get me wrong Godzilla does add to the film and overall the whole film is FANTASTIC. You can not miss this movie at the BIGGEST screen, it is not for tv size. Best movie of the year because of the human characters and their story.

Glad to see you folks in the UK are going to finally get to see what we in Canada and the US have been enjoying. I saw this in IMAX and the sound and visuals were spectacular. The characters in this film really drew you in. Godzilla is the nastiest version yet, he looks royally pissed off the whole film. By far my favorite Godzilla film yet and all and all a very good movie in general.

    Amazing review!
No one looks like you, no one talks like you, the environment is NOT YOUR neighborhood.
Pure Human experience. Great writing, great everything! You can't leave the theater unaffected by what you see.
You get a character arc, you get a character arc, and you get a character arc. Character arcs for everyone!
    GREAT competent, effective storytelling.
    Zero checkboxes.
Please, financially support this film. Send a loud message with your wallets. Thank you TOHO.

I posted above that part of what made it so good was that it was more about the PEOPLE with compelling characters and great story arcs for them (a "hero journey" for the main character). The story had INTERESTING AND COMPELLING CHARCTERS AND GREAT HUMAN DRAMA. Too often the focus of the movie is mostly on the MONSTER and the characters are generic and poorly acted. Not the case here.

Great movie. Usually the human characters and stories contribute nothing to the movie and are boring. In this one , it was a a huge plus and was extremely interesting. And to see Godzilla grow from a small monster to the terrifying creature he is, was awesome. Highly recommend for even non fans of gojira

I've been telling EVERYONE to see it. Soundtrack was incredible (and no Hans Zimmer)😉

Dude ... I think you have badly missed the point of the ending.
When the camera zooms in on Noriko, we can see that she has a thyroid goiter on her neck. While not necessarily a death sentence, this tells you that she has radiation sickness and probably will not live long, and that her suffering is nowhere near over. I should probably point out that any Japanese person over a certain age has seen people with thyroid goiters (my wife's grandmother had a huge one), so they will almost immediately understand what this is implying. That's only one of numerous things in this movie that probably go over the heads of a non-Japanese audience.
The ending tells you that at least Noriko and Koichi are together. They can have their happy moment NOW -- but it is only a fleetng moment. Japan doesnt do "happy ever after".
Bittersweet is about the best you can hope for

Considering the question of whether she could survive the damage from that Atomic Breath, and knowing the history of Japan's Godzilla franchise, the film can be interpreted in another way. It might involve the assimilation of G-cells. In Godzilla vs. Biollante, a plant monster was born from the fusion of a doctor's daughter, a rose, and G-cells.
However, I had the same interpretation as you. For a brief time, I imagined a delusion of living a happy life with family.

Just as nuclear weapons will not disappear from this world, Godzilla will not die.
Just as the aftereffects of the atomic bombing will not heal, G-cells will remain in her body and torment her for the rest of her life.

    • @nont18411
      @nont18411 6 месяцев назад

Or it could be that she’s mutated with a spilling G-cells during the blast.
And if you had seen the ending of Shin Godzilla, you could interpret that the thing in the ending of Shin Godzilla could be what Noriko will become in a not so distant future.

The worst thing that could happen to this film is that Hollywood will start hiring Takashi Yamazaki (the director) and Ryunosuke Kamiki (the protagonist’s actor) because Hollywood will ruin them BIG TIME.

Godzilla Minus One is the unofficial sequel to Oppenheimer.
It's interesting to me that not a lot of people realize that.
Oppenheimer is a movie about the atom bomb test. Minus One takes place directly after the bomb was dropped on Japan.
Does that mean that Oppenheimer 'fathered' TWO atomic weapons.
One mechanical and one of flesh?
