Met my mom when he was training green broke horses for a riding stable. she was an army aircorp RN. My dad could build anything and he helped a lot of people in his life. He turned me on to the carter family and all the old timey stuff. Doc and Merle Watson i remember when a tractor rolled over Merle. Jimmy Rogers. Even Dillon. He would have thought Billy was the pinnacle of country/folk etc. rock on Billy Strings.
Billy manages to pull of that most rare musical feat: He is fastidiously faithful to the roots of his tradition while at the same time elevating his performance to new levels of innovation. He is reverent of the past while blazing into the future.

I'm sure most here know how difficult it is to do what Billy is doing here which is holding down every part of a song, the melody, bass line, rhythm and laying down single note solos while making it so effortless and flowing perfectly. You're seeing decades of playing here considering he started at like 5 or 7? It's so amazing that he's just 28!
When I hear Billy play, I am reminded that he stands on the shoulders of giants. I also get the feeling that, someday, his shoulders will be the ones elevating the young hotshots. I'm old enough to have seen this play out with those who came before before and very glad for it. Watching Billy progress is an absolute joy. Don't take the opportunity for granted.
He is a disciple of Doc in every way and I'm here for it. Doc was also like a human jukebox just like Billy has worked hard to become. You could probably ask him to play literally anything and he'll know it and do it his way

My Brother's Wife died April 26th with cancer, and so I was thinking about him when I woke up this morning. She is being buried today and He is going through this time of bereavement down in Pensacola Florida where he is a teacher now on Base and He retired Master Chief of the Command thereafter 30 yrs, and I knew her pretty good because we were both stationed over in Yokosuka Japan for a few years and that is where he met her and she was a Japanese woman that lived in Tokyo. But I sent him this song in a messenger post and it is right as rain, and I hope he sees the hope of that uncloudy day and your song brings him some comfort. It is a cloudy day here but there are never any storms there.
Willie is just one of the many artist who released Unclouded day. It was written by Josiah Kelly in 1879 and was part of a new movement in Country Gospel music. It was first recorded and released by the Staples Singers in 1956 on Vee-Jay Records. That version was and inspiration to a young Bob Dylan who called it "the most mysterious thing I'd ever heard."
The following are Josiah Kelly Alwood's own words about the inspiration for the song as found in the "Christian Conservator", Feb. 26, 1896. "A Rainbow at Midnight and a Song with Morning" "It was a balmy night in August 1879, when returning from a debate in Spring Hill, Ohio, to my home in Morenci, Michigan, about 1 o'clock a.m. I saw a beautiful rainbow north by northwest agianst a dense black nimbus cloud. The sky was all perfect clear except this dark cloud which covered about forty degrees of the horizon and extented about halfway to the zenith. The phenomenon was entirely new to me and very lovely. I had traveled ten miles from the scene of mental toil, Morpheus was playing his sweetest lullaby. Who found Billy during covid? I not only found Billy but through him I found Marcus King, Molly Tuttle, Bryan Sutton and all the other monsters. I'm a blues player but I grew up with my uncles picking the Doc stuff so Billy is like a trip back to when I was a kid loving the shit out of listening to my uncles trying to pull off Beaumont Rag and singing Tom Dooley. Saw him and the band in 2018 at a local festival, for FREE, if you can believe that....i was blown away and have been hooked ever since... Knew the others before covid---i was supposed to see molly tuttle at a local venue here in chicago last march, but it was canceled due to the shutdown....shit, the shutdown happened less than a week before the show:-( bryan sutton is on turmoil and tinfoil....grabbed that CD from the merch table right after that show in 2018!! larkin poe was supposed to play at that same festival last june, 2020, but of course that got canceled.... if you ever get a chance, give them a listen....i really started to follow them during covid, as with samantha fish..... i actually found a coupla vid's just this morning with both of them on stage together.... i'd love to see a collaboration... plenty of great, young talent out there....too bad commercial radio sucks ass and doesn't give them airplay, tho i have heard marcus king on the radio a few times....

I'm a 50+ year-old metalhead ex-guitarist in Cornwall in the UK and just found your music and I am absolutely hooked - I can't think of how many times I have watched and listened to your live "Dust In A Baggie" with Don Julin from 2015. I'm actually very interested to know if you use a standard tuning on your guitar or do employ a specific "bluegrass" tuning? I have been a huge closet fan of bluegrass for many years (since seeing "Southern Comfort" in the early '80s) and would like to give it a go in this the autumn of my years although my stroke-ridden brain and subsequent constant brain-farts will undoubtedly try and stop me 😉
I've dabbled with the guitar for a few years. Self learning is a slow process but I enjoy the guitar and I'm sure I'm my only fan. I love bluegrass and and in aww when I watch Billy play. Your post mentioned stroke. I had a stroke last year and am saddened to think I may never play again. I'm trying to find a way. I've gotten most of my function back but my little finger and ring finger on my fretting hand don't understand how to move. Do you have any suggestions for stroke brain?

I was never a huge fan of picking and bluegrass but a year ago it all changed when I found billy. He puts a modern twist without butchering the original style. He’s gonna bring so many people over to the genre.

"How can anyone dislike this song?" Billy Strings's performance is excellent. The song, like all songs that express a longing to die so that an existence in some religious paradise can begin, is profoundly pitiful. Any religion that promotes songs like this is creepy.

I think like most of us, Billy has his favorite songs and takes a deep dive into them. No matter how long you have been playing, take that deep dive into the songs you know and feel and with what you know how to play. It will come across the same. You will inspire others as well. I love this song, and yes he can play a lot fancier than me, but the inspiration is the same. I love Billy Strings for preserving that aspect of Americana music.

I was never a huge fan of picking and bluegrass but a year ago it all changed when I found billy. He puts a modern twist without butchering the original style. He’s gonna bring so many people over to the genre.
He's really good at what he does, he's great.
I'm one of those of whom you speak. I stumbled upon him a couple of years ago and was immediately hooked. Not particularly a big fan of bluegrass at the time, but I love love love talent.
Gonna play this for our family reunion to honor our lost one's this month of may the 15th ☮👏
