Deathspell Omega - Fas - ite, maledicti, in ignem aeternum (remastered)

  • This is a remastered version of Deathspell Omega’s fourth album, 2007’s Fas - ite, maledicti, in ignem aeternum (Latin: Divine Law - Depart, Ye Cursed, into Everlasting Fire; a reference to Matthew 25: en.wikipedia.o.... I’ve made two significant changes to the audio (my source was a lossless rip of the CD), and I feel both improve significantly on commercial releases of the album.
First, I mitigated digital clipping with iZotope RX3 Advanced’s declipper. (If you don’t know about digital clipping and the loudness war, TV Tropes has a good overview at www.tvtropes.or.... But a warning: TV Tropes will ruin your life.) The result isn’t as good as an unclipped master would be, but it has far more dynamic range and “punch” than commercial releases and is a less fatiguing listen. (For those familiar with the TT Dynamic Range Meter, this version is DR12, where the original CD is DR6, and even vinyl rips have been DR10 or DR11, though the DR meter isn’t too reliable for vinyl rips: the vinyl master has the same clipping as the CD, but it’s still a less fatiguing listen due to the nature of vinyl.) I don’t fully understand how iZotope's declip algorithm works, but it seems to scan amplitudes within a selected threshold for frequency data, waveform slope, and number of clipped samples; then fill audio outside the threshold with its guess of what was stripped out.
Second, I amplified quiet passages with a gain envelope. Many segments of this album were mixed so quietly as to be effectively inaudible. They’re still quieter than the rest of the album here, but they’re clearly audible, reframing the louder parts within otherwise inaudible context.
The result has raised this album from being on par with Deathspell Omega's other work for me to by far my favourite of their releases and possibly my favourite album of all time. I hope you enjoy it.
I make no claim to owning this audio, and the processing I did wasn’t particularly complicated on my end (though iZotope's declipper is presumably extremely complicated); all rights to the audio belong to Deathspell Omega and Norma Evangelium Diaboli, while the rights to the cover art most likely belong to the estate of the artist, Timo Ketola (R.I.P. - 2020 was such an abysmal year overall). If you enjoy this and can afford it, you should buy the album; you can purchase a digital version at www.qobuz.com/.... Those who prefer physical versions of music should be able to find CDs or LPs easily on Google; NoEvDia has reprinted both fairly regularly.
For more info on this band, I strongly recommend their June 2019 Bardo Methodology interview: bardomethodolog... in which, inter alia, they note their intention “to shatter a myth that’s so central to stability both on an individual and civilisational level: the impervious necessity to believe that what we do is just, that we are just, that good and evil in intent and deed are as distinct as night and day. That what we do is condoned either by God or whatever man-made order that’s taken precedence - whose exceptionalism is of course indisputable and acts like a secular religion.”
    Other recent interviews:
    Bardo Methodology, 2020: docs.google.co...
    Cult Never Dies, 2020: www.cultneverdi...
reddit's Deathspell Omega wiki at / index is also a wonderful resource; it’s certainly more comprehensive than Wikipedia, which has annoyed me by deleting pages for several of Deathspell Omega's releases. (I'm not sure how anyone finds The Synarchy of Molten Bones to be non-noteworthy, for example.)
Track list (with interludes and major stylistic shifts within songs noted):
    1. Obombration I - 0:00
    Part 2 - 1’24”
    Interlude - 3:54
    2. The Shrine of Mad Laughter - 4:48

"A Chore for the Lost" is a masterpiece that continues to elude my understanding, even after all these years. Despite more than 20 years of studying and listening to all kinds of music, I still can't grasp how it was composed or the level of musical skill required. It's a profound mystery to me.

@@cantresistobsession9611 If you aim to create a track like any of DSO, even if you follow all the right steps, use the same song structure, add dissonance and melodies in the same places, and use the same tuning, there is still an element of madness, mysticism, and perhaps extraterrestrial insight that can't be replicated. @@darkbreathhound4215 I've been a metalhead for 35 years. The only metal that has affected me as much as DSO was the first time I heard Deicide - Legion. Prior to that the heaviest thing I'd heard was Slayer. Deicide scared me. Nothing else scared me until I heard DSO and I felt like my soul was being brutalized. My sense of harmony was warped. Normal music sounded weird. The fragile guitars reflected my fragile soul being debased. Frightening music and awesome.

Usually dso inspired black metal bands use dissonance to create melodies that are actually harmonic

With you on this one. Taken at face value, this kind of Metal does not sound pleasing to the ear.
I think fans of this style of metal just use the chaotic sound to fill a blank canvas in their mind and paint a mental picture or direct a mental movie with the music as the soundtrack. I find that visualizing and experiencing the music synesthetically in this way helps a lot with making it more listenable. You're even able to "fill in the blanks" and imagine that it sounds coherent when it might be 100% dissonant.
      Still, not for me.

@@Tonycaveman nah not really, while a lot of the riffs are pretty abstract, a good amount of them are pretty melodic, it's just that the melody is obfuscated by the dissonant harmonies they are a part of, and by the band's heave use of bending which adds this micro-tonal off-kilter feel to anything they do. It's basically dissonant voice-leading. Their song Chaining the Katechon is a much more palatable example of this, especially in the riff that starts at the 23 second mark.

its really not tho. its a very rewarding experience if you relax and pay attention to it, you will find some many missed micro-riffs and melodies. it has such a big replay value to me personally

it's the "fear" of God from mankind , as the first phrase of the second song on the album say: "God of Terror, very low dost thou bring us, very low hast thou brought us".

Lowest form of criticism is calling something boring. At that point you might as well say "I don't like it because I don't like it".
