Thiagarajan Kumararaja is a person as unique as his two films. Waiting for his next. Can't help wondering whether this was the most challenging interview for BR.
TK can be condensed in to one point: dont bear anything that weighs you down, it can be anything - praise, ego of holding up any achievements you had achieved, anything possitive you think about yourself. This man had dropped everything and just floats around like a breeze, thats what makes us love and envy TK, a vitue to develop.
What an amazing personality Bharadwaj Rangan is.. he is extremely into that point of why TK dont explain his films which I felt is exactly taking words from the audience who need him to explain and talk about his films.
I really enjoyed this interview. A lot of things that TK said resonated with me. After visiting the Smithsonian art museum once, I’d shared pictures of some of the abstract paintings on Facebook and jokingly said that they reminded me of the paintings my son had made when he was a toddler. I remember some people took offense to that post and one person even suggested I take an art class to appreciate such paintings. And I was wondering why I should have someone teaching me how to appreciate something. It either appeals to me or it doesn’t … it’s instinctive and in the moment. Having someone explain to you how it must be appreciated seems, for the lack of a better word, second-hand. And almost paternalistic. As if to say, this is the way this art must be seen.
I have seen this is the first time Rangan Sir tried to pull words from his mouth as a critique and also as a fan boy. I love that you’re telling him that u like his adamancy. Good one Sir.
@@SrikarChahasti kashmir files was amazing...especially the part where vin diesel says 'jai shree ram' and climbs himalayas in his car and takeoffs to Pakistan where he accompanied vijaykanth to take out the Pakistan theeviravadhi
When Baddy asked TK whether he likes to make films, he instantly replied NO- to address that the restrictions and freedom of this profession is substantially lesser comparatively. I got reminded of a similar statement from Lokesh Kanagaraj in an interview, where he mentioned how can you be nonchalant about various things as a director, without having to worry about changing and adapting yourself to an environment to fit-in. Thus he wouldn’t hesitate to jump into a different profession if this doesn’t work anymore. It’s fascinating how they share similar perspectives about filmmaking in general.
The most inspiring TK quote for me in this entire interview was when he said “ when you see a product(film)as a business, it’s different but if you see it as an art it becomes a kickass art👌”. So which one you prefer? It’s your choice. Ref 35:00 I also think @ 48:00 when TK was asked why he finds it’s pointless in explaining to audience about a directors choice of shots, he says “with that you close the doors of alternative perspectives and curiosity and given the fact that the people who come to master class amature , removes their freedom to be curious in future, because they are stuck to one perspective to it”. Now BR thinks that masterclass are educational and could inspire enthusiasts to do better but TR thinks it equally shuts other perspective (i.e. 1000 ideas vs 10 ideas), the thing he keeps saying is about more options for curious ideas/perspectives. Quite an argumentative point but an important point. However, nothing would harm in seeing masterclass it’s business in a way but there is no right or wrong as long the director is sincere in his film making objectives. I could see that TK is concern about how the art of filmmaking becomes too institutionalised that it shuts curiosity for alternative perspectives. He want art of filmmaking more democratic. Here I would like to say what’s inspiring is that Barathiraja till today finds it inspiring and quite often says he wished he could have done like TK or Vetrimaran in his films. It show that Barathiraja is ever passionate about learning and doing his craft. In a way timeless. It’s joy to see Tamil Filmmakers past or now have always been bold in thinking how to make their films engage their audience and the variety of stories and film making like Balu Mahendra,Sreedar,Manirathnam,Shankar,Vetrimaran and so on the list goes on..continue to inspire younger directors. In recent times the director is Darani Rajendran “Yaathisai” is another great effort. Should continue to have a democratic thinking with variety of creative ideas in Tamil film makers. That’s their strength.
I dont think any film maker has ever spoken with this kind of conviction. The man speaks his mind for real. Baradwaj may seem to be a bit pushy on certain questions (48 to 53 is my favorite part) but i guess its the best way to understand whats running through this person's mind (Now TK might disagree and couldn't care less 😛) But this conversation had to be done. Brilliant interview, as always. Didn't know BR could be a lot more persuasive.
Mr. TK is a kind of Film-Maker, who understands the real meaning of cinema. For him its not just "Entertainment" like many of the audiences or film buffs expect. Thank You Baddy Sir🙏🏻 for giving such an impacting interview with this genius.

I agree to kumararaja because after watching a movie if someone watches a video essay on it. Like to understand what the film really meant. It really shuts your perspective. A person watching a film would have thought of an allegory or an analogy in a way of his own. But then he goes searches something on it and sees a different person explaining it or even the filmmaker himself or herself explaining this. It kind of makes the viewer feel wrong and his/her thought process just stops and then they believe in what others said. That’s the very reason I strongly stay away from videos that explain films and moreover a lot of filmmakers don’t even like to explain their films. They just want the viewers to perceive it in their own way.
This Interview is Perfect Example of What happens when Unstoppable Force meets an Immovabale object😂💥 Completely Enjoyed it how the Two Extremists stay to their beliefs till the end❤❤❤
The beauty is, we get these two very opposite perspectives. And both are right in their own ways. But personally, being a commercial artist, TK won the debate for me. ❤

So Please explain more in future..
Very professional, intellectual, and very detailed philosophical interview. How he described about Ilayaraja was absolutely true. But several media and directors deliberately spit venoms hence the current generation of directors fail to approach him. Eventually, we the audiences are losers and intentionally lack a one and only icon from Tamil Nadu-India. How many generations of people from around the world are talking about Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Wagner, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Haydn, and Vivaldi with their respective countries of origin. However, trust me, our own Ilayaraja has known several types and variety of music than their counterparts. The above-mentioned experts knew to write notes, organize and conduct notes and play instruments, etc. But Ilayaraja has unique skills in diverse ranges of music knowledge and critics. Hence, all music is disciplined, and no extra sounds which do not hurt your ears with minimal synth flavor to be added with each song. He knows Western, folk, Carnatic, symphony, classical, country, EDM, hip-hop, Jazz, pop, rap, rock and R&B, etc. It has been clearly shown in the interview that Ilayaraja is very innocent, flexible, knowledgeable, to add more to each song, and easy to work with, resilient, down-to-earth person. But the social media portrayed his character as a bad person and difficult to work with. I think it is clearly shown that Dumeels deliberately discriminates against him based on his caste.
Are you seriously saying the biggest pioneers and innovators of classical music like Vivaldi, JSB, LVB are just learned experts and nothing more? Are you aware that there was NO music like theirs before they brought it into the world? Even Ilayaraja would laugh aloud at your attempts to glorify him above the greatest Western classical composers. And I am saying that as a huge, huge Ilayaraja fan. Senseless sycophancy is just as bad as hateful vitriol.
@@madanmohan1024 Sorry Madan, in a nutshell, first you should read and critically analyze what I intend to say. I am not blaming or underestimating the above and I acknowledged that they are genius, inventors, or innovators of one and another. My intention is to show that we have such genius in our country but the bullshit, uncivilized kaalakkeya, inborn slaves dumeels don't understand anything about the music, I didn't tell anything, one of his friends who conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the famous Hollywood composer, John Scott told about him. I have shown his music compositions to music professors (all are PhD holders) in developed countries to get feedback and they were astonished at the complexity of his compositions, they also told that this person has complete knowledge of different types of music hence trying to apply for Honorary Doctorate degree for Ilayaraja In Australia on his behalf. Bro, try to understand what I was saying rather than pre-judging everything as it doesn't give any impact on anybody. I hate saying this bloody f...g fan or anything. Well, whatever I told before was just getting these details from the world-renowned music professors, that's all. I am also trying to get notes from RPO in London to attach with the application for the Honorary. Thanks
As a filmmaker I think TK and Loki have same kind of approach, they both want whatever they're doing to excite them and if it's not they're not up to it, I've seen in lot of interviews Loki saying that and TK also says the same. It's very intresting how they see filmmaking through same lens.
TK is ahead of Loki that's true I just said that the way they want the story to excite them both I find it common in them as far as Film Language both are different and both are on their own track. We want good movies to be made in Kollywood, both of them will deliver it 🤞
The debate they both have in this interview is an age-old one: should the art be separated from the artist? TK is on one end of the spectrum, vouching for separation and letting the subjective experience take over. BR is on the other end, vouching for an explanation of the art by the artist that shows people the path toward a greater appreciation of film. I definitely side with BR on this one - having the artist talk about the art, ultimately, gives ideas and inspiration to people. For example, even in this interview, TK explains how he notices architecture and uses it in his films. After watching this interview, someone who is into films and architecture but has never used one to inform the creation of the other, will try doing that. Explaining the artwork shows people how you can make connections and how you can take inspiration from the things around you. The already-curious will surely figure out a way to connect unrelated things by themselves (which is what TK is relying on). But some people have a dormant inquisitiveness that needs a trigger to come into life and this could be when they hear an artist talk about their art. Plus, I think TK is underestimating the already-curious. If they are curious, they are also likely to be open-minded and thus, will not see the explanation as a door being shut. Instead, they will recognize that they have the capacity to keep the doors open even in the light of that explanation. So it would be a net positive if we had more explanatory content out there that can serve as an inspiration for upcoming artists. The current number of doors that remain shut because of cinema-illiteracy (I don't mean it in a pejorative way) is way higher than if the artist shuts the door with an explanation. But TK knows this and is consciously making a trade-off - he would prefer a world where the curious are rewarded and the mainstream have some mindless fun than a world where even the mainstream are able to have a deeper appreciation for the film and the curious folks' imagination is, only probably, shut off. The trade-off doesn't make sense to me.
Kumarathangaraja is a good director, but why this conversation is very critical, simple question also, he is getting complicating, I don't know why, but myskin, vetri Maran, ram, are gives there reply clearly and understanding,

I thought he is fake, but when I heard is reasoning. Looks like he is genuine
This man is talking life philosophies through the art of explaining holistically the art of cinema. Respect. You got nerves and brains.
Thalaivaaaaaaaa❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thankful to God that I have access to your dimension
When BR living in his fanboy moment 🎉
Very natural human being TKR❤. Not possible to be like him.
He is a true genius
Best interview till date!
very early days of Kumararaja..I participated with him for a documentary he made titled STHALAPURANAM. Now, I am realising how unique he is.
49:19 to 50:02 impressed 💥💥
BR we need a 2nd part.... this is not fair. this interview is unfinished
Atlast TKR is available on a youtube channel..thanks BR for this ❤
Here for the 20th time to rewatch.
This Interview is Perfect Example of What happens when Unstoppable Force meets an Immovabale object😂💥 Completely Enjoyed it how the Two Extremists stay to their beliefs till the end❤❤❤
Yaa...exactly...and it doesn't move a bit lol..😂
😂
The beauty is, we get these two very opposite perspectives. And both are right in their own ways. But personally, being a commercial artist, TK won the debate for me. ❤
I think you are not a person to speak to impress. but when you said you don't enjoy making movies and doing movie, I didn't quite understand it.. hearing the first time from the film maker or creative artist that that you don't enjoy making movies but you do amazing..
Thanks
When TK spoke to giving options to the past. Incredible!
"Art is not what is there, but how you perceive it",.. superb 🙂
What if we see "பாலமுருகன் பழக்கடை" reference in future TK film.. வச்சாலும் வப்பான் இந்தாளு TK..😂
What reference is that bro? I didn't get the reference
@@vtgrokz TK said this for an example.. Nothing big. But that carried out throughout interview.
Already in super deluxe
Fact fact nesama andha aalu engaya adhu vaipan ,kanla vellakena vittu pakka ready 😂
24:27 😂 me with my "ponumadaa".
Abbada Thalaivan ah pathu evlo naal aachu.. nandri Barad sir ey
As a filmmaker I think TK and Loki have same kind of approach, they both want whatever they're doing to excite them and if it's not they're not up to it, I've seen in lot of interviews Loki saying that and TK also says the same. It's very intresting how they see filmmaking through same lens.
TK is in a different league altogether!!
i think TK is leagues ahead, even his thought process is on a different plane
Loki making movies for audience with his intrest and passion..
But TK making movies to just to show what he likes ....
@@valoriefalorie4223 Loki was good, but over expectations going to let him down
TK is ahead of Loki that's true I just said that the way they want the story to excite them both I find it common in them as far as Film Language both are different and both are on their own track. We want good movies to be made in Kollywood, both of them will deliver it 🤞
1:07:20 film வேற நம்ம வேற இல்லையா 😮😮😮😮
For the first time I saw bardwaj sir is struggle a little bit😂
I always love people who talks about Emotions, philosophy, Genuinity. ❤️❤️❤️. TK👽❤️
And that’s how a civil argument looks! 👏🏼 There are several hats BR can wear but a prime time news show anchor isn’t one 😅
25:02 rarest answer you can find from director
Kumarathangaraja is a good director, but why this conversation is very critical, simple question also, he is getting complicating, I don't know why, but myskin, vetri Maran, ram, are gives there reply clearly and understanding,
Two intellects in one room.. what do you expect ❤
Every creator is intellect, Just they are dare to be Frank in making films or what they talk
The only director in this world to say "don't judge me by my movies"
I can see many people's thoughts with interviews.🎉
The depression which Kumararaja talks about is very reminescent of Vangogh's depression phase
One of the best Interviews from Bk.. TK man in form expecting more movies from him
Thank you for this intreview, been waiting to hear thus guy talk in detail
