From Rodeo to Addiction - My Guest, World Champion Bareback Rider, Davy Ross.

It feels obvious to say that being a cowboy isn’t for the faint of heart. My guest this week found an immediate connection to the rodeo at the age of 5 when he heard a person talking about the rodeo on the radio. It wasn’t until a few years later that he got his first shot at riding in the little britches circuit. At the age of 11, Davy was getting his feet wet with bull riding and at that time sustained his first serious injury when he broke his arm after being bucked off a bull and then to add insult to injury the bull stepped on his broken arm. For most kids, this would have been enough to give them second thoughts about being a cowboy, but not Davy. Instead he was back out there riding with a cast the very next weekend.
Davy explains as the years went by he tried other events at the rodeo and found his talent and calling with bareback riding. It was in that event that Davy rose through the ranks to eventually become a 2 time World Champion. Clearly he was hooked on riding and this was made obvious by how often he would ride, sometimes as many as 9 events in a single week.
Along the way, Davy continued to mount up injuries that were accompanied sometimes by surgeries and usually some type of pain killers. As the injuries piled up, Davy didn’t realize how dependent he was becoming to the opioids. Suddenly he noticed that he was taking more and more pain killers everyday just to feel normal and he was having to buy them off the streets to match his dependency.
Once he could no longer afford his pill habit he turned to shooting up heroin and then he saw his once storied life spiral out of control eventually landing him homeless in the streets of Memphis. How he found refuge in God and turned his life to even make it back to pro riding is nothing short of a miracle. This story needs to be heard by everyone!
