- This version was part of the batch of 50's hits Webb rerecorded in stereo for Decca for the Webb Pierce Story double album.
This version was the first version of the song I ever heard in the early 80's and a few years passed before I had a chance to hear the original. For a long time I preferred this one.

A hard job well these early country music artist had one . A two hour show three times . Back on the bus or the car . Drive two hundred miles unpack sound check . And here we go again . Cheap motels bad food and little sleep . Boy you better love what your doing . Hats off to the real country legends like Webb Pierce !!
Webb got the hell off the road in the early 60's and flew to most dates and spent more time managing his business interests mixed with studio work for the rest of his career..
Reminds me of the old tavern jukebox in the early 70s with sawdust on the dancefloor and couples gliding to the rhythm.
Good version Still I Like The Original best, All versions by Webb are good better and Best.

don't feel bad i'm 57 and grew up with hippie sisters who loved music of all sorts i learned about all the country greats early on. and took plenty of crap for listening to it , those guys were the real deal, one of the few new people i do love and play alot is Patty Loveless, She is one amazing lady in that old time relm. as a picker i love the stuff she does it's a ton of fun to play and she keeps tradition at the front of her approach. thanks for the responce. take care..
I miss these old songs, my Dad used to spin them on our record player every Saturday night, sometimes on a Friday night if he got into the brew, lol, then came the ages of the 8-track, so then he had to join "record/tape club" in order to get the music he loved, so he could play it on his truck 8-track player & home version one, the days of REAL Country Music and growing up knowing & singing every song, in fact I remember it being called "Country & Western", now it's "Country Pop" mostly :(
I was an old timer at about 35....Born in '61, and by '96 it was over.....
Being a Brit married to a beautiful Texas Lass, I have opened a new door to a fabulous collection of musical delights in traditional country music. This simple song and the impeccable delivery of Webb Pierce chokes me with emotion at the sentiment within the first few bars with emotive lyrics and the picture it paints. So when I grew up with the Beatles I would have traded it any day for this wonderful music. Thank You....Paul O

Well we still have Charlie Pride, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn I bet we could think of a few more. lol
mrsamzero1 True, when i say back in the day i mean mid 50's.. Ray Price, Webb, Mel, Willie........ Willie's first REAL recording session was in 59' he did some as early as 55'. Mel's first session was for Columbia in 57'.

Loretta is real close starting in 1960, Charlie came later in late 65' WITH WEBB'S HELP by the way.
Dolly did some stuff as early as 59' but really started in 62'.

I'll bet the old timers in the 50's thought Webb and Carl Smith and Faron were ruining "traditional" country music.
Having said that, todays "country" is almost pure pop and I can't stand 98% of it.

Thanks to Sam Hunt for sampling this masterpiece. If it wasn't for Sam Hunt sampling this masterpiece, I wouldn't even have known it existed. I love old country music. I'm only almost 21.
Technically he sampled the original 1950s version this was a re-recording done in the early 60's to take advantage of stereo.
Sam also sped it up slightly which I never could understand...

There is a 3rd Decca version recorded in 1972. I've got the 45 but i haven't heard it in years. I remember not liking it much. I think they were trying to modernize it.

Well said, my friend....I feel the same way as to missing those drinking days and now happy to be over them. Most all of the old friends and honky tonks are gone. San Pedro for those who do not know is the LA Harbor and it was wild.

That picture was taken at the pool at the Spence Manor Hotel before the five-star Hotel was converted into condominiums.
I think Webb was a part owner at the time.
It's still there.
It's funny that while the Beatles were taking all the headlines back then these country icons were playing the best country music in the world. and were just as pioneering as any rock group, Shame that todays country cept a few has fallen by the way side.and isn't even the shadow of this kind of true american country.. sad indeed

The original Webb Pierce version from 1953 is so much more soulful and better. But this version here is a more commercial sound,… of the era, 1964 country.
I prefer this version MUCH more. In fact, Webb was singing in such a high, "tinny," hillbillyish
key that I can't bear to listen to it.

Another great song by Webb! I went to a birthday party Thursday night to a local restaurant with a full bar, I could not believe there was no J.D. black label! No Jim Beam, no Crown Royal except Apple! Finally settled for Jack Daniels Fireball, hehe I had 7 shots, there stood my stack of shot glasses, I was happy again! Left there 4 hours later went to another place, sat at a table with an empty glass sitting there, and someone ordered me a shot of my good old JD! I ordered a tall glass of water....There stands the glass still full, LOL Have a good one!

2packs4sure Lol no after effects for me! Just came back from lunch had a cup of gumbo loaded Cajun fries split with my daughter, she had tea I had 2 shots w/ side of coke, small tumbler. I never was much of a drinker when I was young, except once when I came home from work and talked to a goose! LOl my son who was 10 at the time had shot it in one wing. I had had a BAD day and downed a pint...didn’t make me sick.

It IS still there. I live in Nashville and drive by Spence a lot during the week. It's a shadow of its former self. It's either condos or offices but the owners haven't kept it up. Sad.

Anybody else notice that he switched the lyrics in the 2nd verse? 1953 version (and every cover I know of) says "...that will hide all my tears, that will drown all my fears." This version switches "tears" and "fears." Assume this was an accident, since the original makes more sense logically and emotionally. Who am I to nitpick Web Pierce though? One of the all-time greats.
I've heard them both hundreds of times,, this version more than the original, actually, and NEVER noticed that !

Many a great singer has recorded this Webb Pierce hit, several do a good version however they ALL pale when compared to Webb, just my humble opinion.
Agreed, I think my two favorites are Conway's and Johnny Bush's versions but Webb OWNS it !

I wonder if big Jim Webb is playing steel guitar on this recording. Big Jim was a heck of a great guy, who eventually took the job of bus driver for Loretta Lynn, for many years.
I'd love to know for sure who's on steel here,, I'd love to see detailed session info. on Webb's post 1962 stuff but it's never turned up.
Having said that,,, Pete Drake played steel on the majority of Webb's early 60's stuff though this doesn't have the old Pete Drake tuning that's so easy to identify.
This was also about the time Pete Drake went away from that tuning forever so who knows...

I had tons of Curless on 45's but hurricane Harvey got em',,, I never did move any of them to digital unfortunately along with many others.

No sir,, Sam Hunt used a slightly sped up version of Webb's original 1953 version.
Why Sam thought it needed speeding up I'll never understand...

It made Webb sound too cartoony and it kind of killed it for me.

I think one much but still much, so yea,,,,,, much,,,,,,, just not much much.
In my opinion.......
Webb's voice
was pitced too
high in the original
version. And
the fiddles
sounded sour,
out of tune, hill-
billyish, and
were perhaps
not very good
instruments
played by bad
fiddlers. I can
live without the
fiddles. If they
insist on them,
I can handle just one, and it's far better to
just employ a good violinist
with a top-notch violin!
But no com-
plaints here. I
like these re-records Webb
did. Everyone
else who did
re-records... well, they sucked!!!

The original There Stands The Glass is not everybody's cup of tea but I love it.
