I’m only about 45 minutes in and probably won’t go the distance, but just wanted to let you know how much I’m enjoying it. Great quality and your group is really fun to watch. Kudos on an excellent production!

Matt reminds me so much of a friend from my youth in Gillette, Wyoming. He was our DM on Saturday morning D&D sessions at the Campbell County public library and a couple of years later, after I had moved to Laramie, the chief rival my high school debate team. He was the only one of us who knew how to really play D&D, and like Matt he was patient, a good teacher, and dedicated to his craft. I played this very game, from Avalon Hill, with a great bunch of guys from that same group, but I don't remember ever actually completing a game as we would end up goofing off more than anything else at 2 in the morning at someone's house. Great times, great memories...
Wow, that was fun! Definitely some classic Dune moments. Thanks for the rules refresh - time to go crack my GF9 copy. :) Also - great job, Jerry! Everything looked amazing.
That was a surprising good watch. I even watched it specifically full time, which I did not expect to do. Also, having cheese-its as spice would actually work really well in the narrative. Only rich people can afford to eat the spice, it has a strong odor, etc. Only difference is that instead of blue eyes from the spice diet you get yellow fingertips from the cheese-it diet.
Hey I love your format, the high production quality, and your voice Might I suggest you have a seperate solo explanation part? So we don't spend watching you in such a small portion of the screen for more than 10 minutes, while everyone else kinda checks their phone and fiddles
What Anna did moving into Carthag and arrakeen is legal under all rules except hardcore tournament rules. Where by having troops in arrakeen or Carthag gives you access to ornithopters from the minute you inhabit them.
Because of this video, I was excited to get in on a game of Dune for the first time today. It was fantastic! The Shield Wall got atomicked on Turn 1, opening Arrakeen and Carthage to storms for the rest of the game. Alliances rose, nearly won, fell and dissolved. And the whole thing came down to two grand alliances formed around the opposition of the Fremen and the Guild, as both strove to ensure their end-game victory conditions at the end of Turn 15. Thank you for introducing me to this game @Matthew Colville; that was indeed a memorable 8 hours!
Love this so much, bought the game and ready to play once it's all safe. Might even stream it if I can. Matt: "A thousand deaths are not enough for Yueh" Tom: "That's why I blew him up with a laser!" Me: LOL! Thanks awesome peeps!
Thanks guys. I'm new to boardgaming, went to a game-shop, and picked up this AMAZING game because I have been a long-time fan of the book! It took little while to get the hang of it, but Matt I completely agree with you that the flavor of the game - specifically the advantages and disadvantages of the guilds - is incredible! I have two questions - In the FAQ sheet of my game, it says that you CAN ship into Carthag/Arrakeen and right away use Ornithopters. But here, at 1:22:00, you don't let Anna do it. In the instructions, this is justified as being in accordance with the way kanly-feuds play out in the Dune world. One guild could very well raid another's territory and right away have their advantages, in this case, stealing Ornithopters. Here's my second question - With my group, we unanimously prefer to divide Shipping and Movement into two separate phases, such that everyone goes does shipping, and only after that, everyone goes around and does movement. We enjoy the reacting then reacting that this enables. What are your thoughts on this variation?
The reason Anna could not use the Ornithopters is she did not control Carthag or Arrakeen. You are correct, if she did, that move would have been allowed.
I love all the Avalon Hill games. Started as a gamer at the age of nine playing Victory in the Pacific. Wow, that was 43 years ago. The mechanics of Dune are amazing, this would be a hoot to play.....more so than Civilization (cause I like treachery).
Love this game and so glad you all are playing it! I'm a Dune fan all the way and I got this for Father's Day. Now to find 5 likeminded folks to play it with! It's a challenge that I'll probly only accomplish 3-5 times in my life, I guess, if that. But I am glad I have it
That's what the Q&A of the GF9 version says, true. (Although their explanation is kinda funny-you can't secretly sneak a single unit into a territory occupied by another faction, but it's possible to ship all your troops into a stronghold and steal like twenty ornithopters without a battle. To stick to the theme there should at least be a limit of ornithopters that can be stolen, but I guess the game is complicated enough as it is.) I think it's a great game, but there are so many different rulesets, that it's probably hard to agree on some situations. I'm currently motivating my friends to dive into the rules, soon we'll play our first round. But I'm already confused about which ruleset to use.
40 years ago, for about 3-4 years, I used to play several Dune games per week. Our group was always excited and happy to play, so much so they even smiled before the game started, unlike your crew. Brings back many happy memories to see the game played again though, thanks.
This seems pretty fun, but I’m surprised water doesn’t play a bigger role in the game. It has more of a presence in the book than spice does. It would be cool to incorporate as a resource somehow, such as having amounts required to do different actions, reclaiming it from the dead after combat. Thanks for sharing the game!
Let's give props again to Jerry for the fantastic live UI work!!

Thanks for ruining the video... you didn’t hide your spoiler at all.
Amazing Job Everyone!!!! So damn'd much fun watching you guys play --- Thank You!!!
I wish I had a board game group like this, you are all amazing! Great job, as usual
A looong Dune themed live boardgame video? #SUB
I want to see more of this. Also Jerry is OP.
Yay more matt! Been missing yall
Wow, that was fun! Definitely some classic Dune moments.
Thanks for the rules refresh - time to go crack my GF9 copy. :)
Also - great job, Jerry! Everything looked amazing.
Yeah, I'd definitely watch more of this! I've been wondering whether or not to get the game and ye folks have 100% persuaded me...
That was amazing to watch, i really hope your group plays this epic game again and put the video on RUclips to watch. Keep up the great viewing.
"Spice? ... Do you? ... Do you Spice?"
AaaaaHahahahahaaaa! Yes this YES! HDYWTDT?
The Meat Man Cometh
That was a surprising good watch. I even watched it specifically full time, which I did not expect to do.
Also, having cheese-its as spice would actually work really well in the narrative. Only rich people can afford to eat the spice, it has a strong odor, etc. Only difference is that instead of blue eyes from the spice diet you get yellow fingertips from the cheese-it diet.
you totally need a batman-like tune for the transitions
Hey I love your format, the high production quality, and your voice
Might I suggest you have a seperate solo explanation part?
So we don't spend watching you in such a small portion of the screen for more than 10 minutes, while everyone else kinda checks their phone and fiddles
I like watching this back sometimes and Matt's dramatic rules explaining at 20:44 cracks me up every single time. Very fun!
This looks like a masterpiece of a game. Definitely getting this.
What Anna did moving into Carthag and arrakeen is legal under all rules except hardcore tournament rules.
Where by having troops in arrakeen or Carthag gives you access to ornithopters from the minute you inhabit them.
Three hours in.
This is insanely entertaining xD
Outstanding video. It's reassuring to know it's not just my group that talk over each other when someone is trying to explain something.
Only halfway through and would love to see you guys play again.
I was a fan of the original. To see a new version is a fan moment! I'd love to see more gaming on DUNE.
I watched the entire thing. I've never played, heard so much about it, and you guys were entertaining enough to watch the whole 4 hours. You did good.
Love this so much, bought the game and ready to play once it's all safe. Might even stream it if I can.
Matt: "A thousand deaths are not enough for Yueh"
Tom: "That's why I blew him up with a laser!"
Me: LOL!
This is so complicated and has so many win or lose conditions. I want to play this.
I love all the Avalon Hill games. Started as a gamer at the age of nine playing Victory in the Pacific. Wow, that was 43 years ago.
The mechanics of Dune are amazing, this would be a hoot to play.....more so than Civilization (cause I like treachery).
So that’s how the intro was supposed to play out...
Love this game and so glad you all are playing it! I'm a Dune fan all the way and I got this for Father's Day. Now to find 5 likeminded folks to play it with! It's a challenge that I'll probly only accomplish 3-5 times in my life, I guess, if that. But I am glad I have it
For 7 minutes, I'm going "Why aren't there any sea tiles?"
And just now, it hits me... "Oh, right.... Dune. They drink their own sweat."
I've watched this all the way through several times now. It never gets old. Keep playing DUNE!
The move Anna did at 1:20:22 is actually correct.
Also why are you playing with the advanced rules but without the advanced combat rules?
That's what the Q&A of the GF9 version says, true. (Although their explanation is kinda funny-you can't secretly sneak a single unit into a territory occupied by another faction, but it's possible to ship all your troops into a stronghold and steal like twenty ornithopters without a battle. To stick to the theme there should at least be a limit of ornithopters that can be stolen, but I guess the game is complicated enough as it is.)
I think it's a great game, but there are so many different rulesets, that it's probably hard to agree on some situations. I'm currently motivating my friends to dive into the rules, soon we'll play our first round. But I'm already confused about which ruleset to use.
Spice Harvest:,In rulebook it says: Normally 2 spice per troop unit. If you have 'harvesters' (control of those specific strongholds) it's 3 per unit.
Only realized where Leech's imp's name comes from when Matt pronounced O'D.
40 years ago, for about 3-4 years, I used to play several Dune games per week. Our group was always excited and happy to play, so much so they even smiled before the game started, unlike your crew. Brings back many happy memories to see the game played again though, thanks.
Would love to see more Dune streams!!
I was thinking the same, that it had to have been a form of currency or advatage
I fear I must become the sleeper, for I have to awake early... pausing at 1:20:01 so I can renew the vision tomorrow!
