According to Korean's perception, Princess Bari is the manifestation of the ideal female and human being. She does not work wonders nor does she possess any special wisdom or power. She demonstrates filial piety toward her parents despite the fact that they abandoned her.

King dying prior to her quest.
She's gone for years and is surprised to find him dead on her return.

He may have died slowly. Remember, they were having the funeral when she got back. It was probably a belief to the listeners when originally told that the spirit had not reached the underworld because the rituals for the burial had not been completed. This, if I am not mistaken, was a Buddhist belief, which would be further strengthened by the girl meeting the Buddha on her journey. Also, I would suspect Buddha included in the narrative was to enforce his desire to help those willing to be so determined by good intentions.
But, regardless, the desire to help people when others won't, even if it takes 9 years, is selfless. Especially, from her due to the same family sending her away at birth.

@@ashleyklump4638 She was gone for a lot longer than 9 years.
She embarked on a long journey over treacherous terrain, before reaching the realm of the dead.
Then she walked 3,000 leagues (a league on land is 3 miles / 4.83 km) then she spent 9 years with her husband - she'd have been gone for decades according to the story.

With Princess Bari, Hwang Sok-yong entwines an old Korean myth, which tells of an abandoned princess travelling to the ends of the earth to find the elixir of life that will bring peace to the souls of the dead, with the ethereal and haunting backdrop of the modern world.

    Lets not forget:
    - Princess Kaguya
    - Hephaestus/Vulcan
    - Oedipus Rex
    - Perseus & His Mother
    - Moses
    - Sleeping Beauty(Arora)
    - Superman
    - Goku
....you get my point. Kids not wanted or sent away for safety. Then, raised by or live with someone else.
