Thanks for the story insights! Immersive Translate helped me appreciate how Black Myth Wukong reflects the rich tapestry of Chinese mythology and Journey to the West.
The funny thing with Monkey born from a stone, it become an "euphemism" for Chinese parents when they want to avoid the talk of "Where do baby come from?" Basically equivalent of "Babies being delivered from Storks" in European folklore.
This honestly makes Wukong seem more noble than he’s depicted in the book. Whilst not a villain as such, his actions tend to be dictated by his own whim, he frequently breaks laws, engaged in trickery, and is not above lying to get his way. For instance, when he goes to the palace of Ao Kwang, he introduces himself as the dragons neighbour, and hints that it’d be really bad if they hadn’t heard of him, thus gaining entrance to the palace through trickery. He then essentially demands that Ao Kwang give him a decent weapon, and after going through them all, decides none of them are good enough. The dragon’s wife suggests the sea needle as a weapon for him just to make him leave, since Wukong’s various feats of strength are terrifying Ao Kwang’s court. Once he had the staff, Wukong then demands a suit of armour, and if he doesn’t get one he not only won’t leave, but also threatened to use his newly acquired staff on the court. The dragon is forced to summon his brothers, who between them form a panoply for Wukong, who promptly leaves apologising for the inconvenience. The dragons then send a complaint to heaven, who respond to this and other complaints by offering Wukong a heavenly position. Not quite the image of wise and compassionate defiance.

The gold headband was only given after he met Tang San Zhang as a tool to inflict pain on Wu Kong if he ever goes against his master’s teachings as punishment
The headband was given much later. When the travelling party encountered bandits, Wukong killed the bandits instead of showing mercy. As killing is against the Buddhist teaching, the Monk requested assistance and this headband was given to prevent further killing.
