Sylvie Guillem is undoubtedly one of the most important and astounding ballet dancers of her generation. Born February 23, 1965 in Paris, France, Sylvie started out as a gymnast. This was pretty much a given. Besides being blessed with natural strength and contortionist-like flexibility, her mother was a gymnastics instructor. Therefore, it was not surprising that young Sylvie gave gymnastics a try.
In 1977, at age 11, she began training at the Paris Opera Ballet School, and in 1981 joined the company's corps de ballet. In 1983, Guillem won the gold medal at the Varna International Ballet Competition, catching the eye of Rudolf Nureyev. She became his protegé and soon earned her first solo role as "Queen of the Dryads" in Nureyev's staging of Don Quixote. In December 1984, after her performance in Nureyev's Swan Lake, Guillem was named etoile or "star," the Paris Opera Ballet's youngest ever.
In 1988, Guillem danced the title role in Giselle, a production staged by the Royal Ballet in honor of Nureyev's 50th birthday. Her performance was a massive success, and although the Parisian fans adored her, she decided to leave Paris for London. Desiring more freedom over her own career, she became a freelance performer and one of the Royal Ballet's principal guest artists.
It was during her time at the Royal Ballet that she was given the nickname “Mademoiselle Non.” Unlike other ballerinas, and most male dancers, Sylvie would speak up. She would question her roles, her participation in dances, and insisted on being a partner in the choreographic process. She became the only dancer allowed to approve partners, ballets, costumes, and photographs. She would go on to become the first ballerina to hire her own choreographers, negotiate her own contracts, and work steadily on projects that she alone selected.
"This is the woman who would transform our view of ballerinas, redefining the shape and movement that we expect to see. Her dévelopés begin at her hip and extend past her ear with an elegance accentuated by the arch of her feet. Her arms and body articulate every note of every dance. Her aesthetic is corporeal... sleek, elegant, lyrical, and panther-like." - Velleda C. Ceccoli PhD, Dance Review, October 14, 2014.
Guillem has become one of the most prominent figures in the history of ballet dancing with many of the greatest companies in the world. Admired by the critics and choreographers alike, she has been privileged to have had premiere choreographies set upon her by such great names as Maurice Béjart, Mats Ek and William Forsythe.
She bade farewell to ballet in 2015 and currently resides in the Swiss mountains with her life partner of 30+ years, Gilles Tapie.

As an ex ballet dancer *THANK YOU!* people do not understand how much strength specifically Core strength needed to do ballet. You're literally holding your own body weight the entire time while making sure to look Light like a feather. Ballet dancers who dance heavy & have horrible lines irritates my soul. I instantly understand why my ballet dancer went OFF when someone looked heavy, didn't point & have horrible Technique even if you looked good doing it *Cries because someone finally sees the difficulty of ballet* 😂

The only problem with the gift of flexibility is that it more often than not is linked with hyper mobility or Elhers-Danlos. I have the later. I did 10 years of ballet as well as gymnastics in high school and University… I’m now 48 and still very flexible despite being a cripple on morphine as I over extended and abused my body for so many years.
I hope young dancers and gymnasts take better care of their body than we did back then.
As per Sylvie, she’s my hero for her personality and her multiple talents.
I loved her the most in Sacred Monsters with Akram Khan. Their chemistry and intuitive understanding of eachother’s intentions and moods is mind blowing.

She's the greatest ballerina of them all. Not only was she light years ahead of other dancers in her time given her extraordinary hyper flexibility along with the most beautiful feet, strength and technique. But most of all she was so incredibly expressive and her soul and spirit shone brilliantly. I'm so moved when she dances with such emotion and fluidity. She's otherworldly even by today's standards. What a gift from the heavens! Thank you Sylvie ❤️

Great compilation, and it's eerie the way your music seems to fit whatever is going on in the vids. The Swamp pdd cracks me up. It's as though she's saying, "Despite my dying of consumption, look at my perfect feet and 185 degree penchee!" {Seriously, her acting there is superb.} Would it be possible for you to credit at least some of the more modern productions, sp the first two clips and the one toward the end where she's in a frothy pink dress and really shows off her phenomenal extension?

Fantastic comment. Thank you!! I work many hours organizing the music and clips so that that happens. I appreciate your noticing very much.
Also, LOVE the idea of the credits. I'll get to work on that. The frothy ( great description) dress piece is rumored to be about Sissy, an historical royal figure. More info to come! Thanks again. You've made my day. ❤️😊🌻

Great compilation as usual Pam. I told you she could compete with Sakharova. To tell you the truth I think she’s much better in conveying the emotion of a role. Her interpretation is much more emotional on top of her undefected technique. She also knows how to show the pleasure she feels dancing. I’m French and I’ve been following her since she danced Ravel’s bolero by Béjart. Many years ago. Good idea to credit the pieces you picked up if it’s not too much work. Thanks again for sharing your admiration with us. Take care and be safe. ❤️❤️❤️

It's just delightful to see her graceful toe work, flexibility and sublime movement entrance you. It is an engaging performance with esquisite body control.. Ballet does do a number on the limbs and muscles. You have to remain in tip top shape, maintain a specific weight, perform daily limber exercises and practice, practice, practice with your partner. .

Like haute couture models theirs is a rarified world, with its own rules and culture. Her legs are works of art, athletes legs, trained to perfection. Her movements precise and exquisite. I am old enough to remember when the force that is Sylvie detonated into the ballet world. This was very long before anyone in the West had seen power and extensions like this. It's hard to believe, now that the 90-degree develope is almost de rigeur even for students. But the ballet world reeled when this French dancer -- of all things! -- hit the international stage. Even today Sylvie's abilities astound. In the 1980s -- she was untouchable.
But technique and beauty aside, my favourite thing about Sylvie is the genuine emotions behind the perfection of her steps. She's sexy, she's playful, she's fresh, she can make you weep. She's Fierce. Ultimately, she's unforgettable.
My sole complaint is the affected undone ribbons she adopted as her signature for a while. Thankfully, it was just a phase.
