Just Head Up Steam Deck OLED Also Has Wifi 6E. The Reason for Running the Ally At 15Watts Was to Demonstrate that at that Same TDP on both of these Handhelds the X Can Achieve Better Performance and Get Better Battery life with the new 80Wh Battery Upgrade. The Ally In performance mode at 17 Watts still comes out on top in Battery Life and of Course Performance is also Increased. Even at a 20Watt TDP the Ally can Offer amazing battery life when compared. I’ll will have a few more videos coming up running the ALLY X at its full Potential soon.
Question1: 10 Watt tests in the future? The Phawx had a really good video with the first Steam Deck showing its strength in this area over the ROG for AAA titles as well as 2d games. I'm curious about the OLED Deck on 10 Watts against the Ally. Question 2: Was the battery test a calculation or did you play or let it run till the device shut off? Like a real world test? As we all know, Microsoft is notorious for running things in the background that take up resources, power... etc. I'm curious to know what the average consumer might experience.
im shocked how many comments dont understand the concept of "performance per watt". this was exactly what i wanted to see. was the ally x beating the steam deck's battery life with simple brute force of ONLY a bigger battery? no, no it wasnt. sure it draws SLIGHTLY more power but its also SLIGHTLY more performant at the same time. as a steam deck oled owner, this makes me happy to see good strong competition to valve, to keep them on their toes. also proves how right they were about this product category to get it going. thanks for the vid
Actually ally x graphics as same the orgianl ally it's just ram and bettery life even though asus call it ally 2 the ally 3 will be z or q@@DrummerLocnar
I'm a steam deck OLED owner, but setting them both to 15w isn't "fair". That's like doing a car drag race between a Mini and Ferrari but limiting the Ferrari to 120bhp to be "fair".
Exactly what I wanted to write too. How this is fair? Ally X has big battery so it can work on more than 15 watt, it feels like it is limited just so the Steam Deck can look good. I like steam deck, but you don't buy Ally X to run on 15 watt TDP.
@@dawidszyszko watching as an SD owner, this video is persuading me to change to the Ally X. More FPS while getting 50% more battery life is a huge bonus for me. Trying to be patient though and wait for the true Ally successor, with a brand new chip and inevitable OLED upgrade.
that is true i also own the SD OLED and was questioning why he would not use the full potential of the Ally. Yes the OLED is also losing a bit of performance by capping it at 15W but the Ally is completely losing it's potential to use it's extra power and most people would probably use it at 20W or even 25W especially when the battery received such an upgrade.
@@Knogooseness I own SD OLED, reason for change is PS Remote Play looks better on 1080p screen and I could use windows from time to time for other things, because my daily computer is a Mac.
1000% agree. The fact that you have to be “fair” for the comparison says enough. I have the oled and preordered the X. Will more than likely play it more than the deck.
I had the choice between the ally or the steam deck OLED a few months ago and I did choose the ally. Best device for me personally. The battery was never an issue for me and I love windows on my handheld. Installing games from GOG is so easy and I use Big Box as my launcher. It's good to have options.
To the comments saying limiting TDP to 15W on the Ally X is unfair: drag racing both systems is pointless because we already know how much more powerful the Ally X is on paper, not to mention a 60% larger battery. Even if its power does not translate 100% into real world tests, it will still have an advantage. Going full throttle on both systems will only tell us what we already know: the Ally X beats Steam Deck pound for pound in terms of raw power. By setting both to 15W, we can have an apples to apples comparison between the two systems in terms of efficiency and power draw.
Thank you for the review. Personally I would love to see a comparison between both with 720p and max TDP (15 vs 25/30) just to see how much better the X performs.
My take on this is... The Steam Deck APU is designed to be played at 3-10W (you don't get a lot of extra performance at those last 5W), and the Ally is designed to be played at 15-25W (and you get much worse performance when dipping below 15W). So, If you are going to run a a big pile of backlog games (older 3D games), emulation, indies etc. Then the Steam Deck OLED makes A LOT more sense, as it has better performance under 10W compared to the Ally... However, if you are going to run AAA games at 15-30W, perhaps have the device hooked up to a display or an external GPU, then The Ally is what makes the most sense. If you are somewhere inbetween I think you can make both devices work for your intended purpose... They are both good.
Actually even AAA or Intensive games don't need full 15 watts on deck, 12 is exactly the same unless you aren't really hitting your target fps already, but it's like a 1-2 fps difference 10 watts is also great, and more of a 3 - 5 fps difference
Yea so much for "Windows is inefficient for handhelds" rhetoric. Now we have the most efficient handheld and with Windows so every single of our game will be compatible.
@@Glotttis When people say "Windows is bad on handhelds" they're talking about actually using it's GUI, the lack of a working suspend/sleep mode and overall UX. It behaves more like a janky laptop than a working console, compared to SteamOS. The battery life in that test is 40% better simply because the battery is 60% larger.
I honestly didn't expect this result myself, especially when everyone says that Windows itself is a big battery drain. That and the Ally X having more performance.
The important thing about the ROG Ally X's screen is the variable refresh rate. Especially if you're not hitting the caked 30/60fps in games, the screen tearing will be quite distracting.
Dude this is very low powerful consoles you never get 100+ fps and never will be use this vrr ,it is all marketing gimmicks like 120hz screen. It is just no sense for portable consoles
@@Kreyven-e7y either you are playing too many triple a games or are just unaware of how many indie games are out there or older games as well. I don't have an Ally but i do have the SD Oled and i hit a stable 90fps in easily over 100 games in my steam library so the Ally with it's extra power will definitely reach 120fps in many games too. Also vrr is more useful in lower fps like op mentioned between 30 and 60 so yes you will definitely be able to take advantage of it.
@@Kreyven-e7y I get 100+ fps on a lot of games, maybe not the newest of the new games, but I get 100+ in most games from the Xbox One/PS4 era and the beginning of this current gen. Especially of you drop the resolution to 720p
@@Kreyven-e7y you're missing the point, VRR is MOST important in that 30-60 range when there's not enough power. Having vrr allows it to fluctuate without screen tearing at those less than 60fps range.
I like the improved performance (primarily due to 30W) I like the increased battery I like the USB4 for eGPUs and the 2280 for expanding the storage. However, I think at this point I'll wait until the next year for a new APU. Hoping for OLED screen and USB4.2 (for thunderbolt 5 support)
@@bossmangaming8936 AAA gaming has been absolutely garbage for the last 3 years or so anyway, I can count on one hand the amount of AAA games I wanna play on my gaming PC, let alone a handheld device on the go.
No normal person plays e new AAA games on these devices 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Probably only a masochist who likes to play on low at 30fps 😂😂😂. These consoles were not made for such games rams.
I just want something to run newer more demanding games. Right now i cant run newer games with out crashing or way to much stuttering. If you like to tinker and mod games steam deck isnt it... I love my deck, but it just... cant compete with what i want out of a mobile system.
Let's add the fact ASUS ROG Ally X pushes 2x more cores, requires much GPU power, 24GB RAM 7500 and it draws literally 0.9W more power than Deck! Not even 1 WATT.
@@deckverseI’m sure that’ll be in the ally 2. I have an OG ally and the fact that it’s not oled doesn’t really bother me. It still looks really good, especially when you add in VRR and the 120hz screen. I use GeForce now ultimate, so I take advantage of the 120hz screen on the daily.
Steam is a huge deal, and deserves my hard earned money, valve pushes Linux so wonderfully they deserve all the support. For me it’s not steam deck vs rog it’s more like steam os vs the disgusting windows
It still comes down purely to use case. Unless the portable handheld is your MAIN gaming device where you play AAA games, you really don't NEED more power than a Steam Deck OLED, especially if you, like myself have a massive catalog of awesome older and retro games on steam, as well as emulation to catch up on. The SD Oled plays everything up until about 2018-2019 without much issue, which is perfect for what I use it for! It's also made me deeply appreciate retro and indie games in a different way, as 2D graphics, early 3D and pixel art just look amazing on the smaller hand held form factor. In my case I have a PS5 & a high end PC at home for when I want to play a modern AAA, so it makes no sense to spend 1000$ (Canadian) plus on a handheld device, that STILL will barely run the newest and greatest games. IMO if you're looking for PS5/Series X plus level power out of a handheld that will actually playably run the most demanding games in existence, we're still a few iterations away from that. Also, the lack of track pads is a BIG issue for me, the SD's track pads are shockingly good for playing oldschool PC shooters, RTS games, etc.. as well as navigating linux in desktop mode! I think there's still a ton of advantages to the SD even with the Ally X's massive battery life improvement. With that said, it definitely seems to be the best Windows handheld on the market!
you definitely do not need more power than the steam deck. But it running on Linux is a problem for general software compatibility and system flexibility. I would recommend most people get the ROG personally
This is exactly what I have been telling people. For $800 you can buy a couple years old Laptop that smokes the ally x without question. Nobody buying these is using it as their only gaming device. They are playing on a real PC or a console like a ps5 when they want to actually play CoD or Cyberpunk. You can’t even read the text in the game on these screens.
Would it be a good idea to buy a SD Oled now and then build a pc in the future? I don't really have any good peripherals and table for a pc right now. Saving up for a complete pc setup would take me longer than just getting SD earlier. If I go for SD I could slowly buy the other stuff that I would need. Ps. The only thing I have right now is a 2nd hand ps4 to play gbvs,mh right now and my phone to play pgr, etc with. Also on another note in my country the price difference between SD Oled and Ally X is around 180 usd. Will the price difference be worth going for Ally X?
@@SeishinTekukutsu If you're cool with mainly playing slightly older games and indies then absolutely, the SD will more than get the job done and it's a wonderfully made piece of tech
@@sanhnguyen97 I wouldn't say its overrated cause they did some great things here but the games we really care about don't run very well on a deck. And the games the deck is good at running can't justify the $549-649 price point
I sold my Ally and bought a Legion because of the ergonomics, after around 20 mins it became uncomfortable to the point I had to put it down, an issue I never have with the Deck, while I like the Legion and the extra screen size I do miss the Ally and the VRR screen, the X ergonomics look really good and I might just go back.
@@OmniTorchI think hes refering to the fact you can set the refresh rate to almost anything between 30-90hz but thats very far from being a VRR screen…
I also think its important to include the fact that the ally can support lossless scaling because of it using windows which basically means you can use frame generation on any game
@@Yusei255not really and even the odin 2 crushes both these devices in that department at a much greater battery life 15+ hours if you want a emulation device just get that or if you don't want to buy a separate device just use your phone and ill still be better in that department if you have any flagship from the last 3 years
Omg, thats truly rock. Ally x can beat sd in 15 watt!!! Even has more fps on it. So much improvement compared to last model. It also good at lower watt like 7 watt!!! When it sets to 20 or 25 watts, its gonna leave SD oled in the dust. Cant wait my ally x drop to my home.... Hype is real
The difference between 90 Hertz and 120 hz is minimal. Hands down the OLED is superior. The real selling point of the ROG Ally display is the variable refresh rate. There is not a single OLED handheld on the market with VRR, it's unusual. VRR is such a godsend for running games on limited GPU since they often or not hitting consistent frame rates, you have to choose between a shaky frame rate or a fairly low FPS cap that gives you a worse experience
Right, and the Ally X doesn't have OLED, only the Steam Deck OLED and Zotac Zone. Kinda an apples to oranges scenario there. I would much rather the Ally X had an OLED screen. But we'll probably need to wait for the next one.
Dog opinion what matters is frame pacing and timing plus latency which really affects the games and the steam decks consostency is beautfiul @conchobar
Yes, windows is way better. I play always Xbox Game Pass and thamks to Play Anywhere I play my Xbox Game on the Ally too. 200> from GOG and hundres games on Epic for free. I don't use Steam at all. Had the Steam Deck. This means that you are extremely limited, extremely poor game compatibility and because of the OLED without VRR there are streaks, tearing, black crush and it is much too dark. The OLED display is bad on the Steam Deck, absolute scam. And I have two LG OLED TVs for my Xbox with VRR. But the Steam Deck display has nothing to do with it.

I'm legit struggling with this choice. I've never held one of these devices but I've got a friend bringing his steam deck to lunch tomorrow so I can feel what they are like. The Ally X is almost a dream device, but $800 is real money. If the Ally had OLED screen I'd probably just bite the bullet without hesitation and spend the extra. Time will tell I guess. :)
What did you end up doing? I tried Ally X at best buy, they had forza demo. looked really slick. I am leaning towards SD OLED for the ease of user experience but fear its lacking power. Not playing AAA or demanding games, but also not emulating.
Compare performance for a given battery life is more applicable than performance per TDP. So telling me one device will play @1080p/60fps vs 800p/40hz for 3 hrs helps my buying decision more than which device offers the best performance @15watts TDP.
@@MrLou2serious No, because comparing power is only useful if you're using these devices to play new AAA games anyway. Indie titles are more suited to be played on the go than AAA ones, and when you're comparing two games that are running the same on both devices, the Deck offers a plethora of advantages while the Ally X only offers more screen resolution and battery life.
bazzite with Ally x is the REAL game changer for me, you can now play ALL games, and still get that awesome steam OS interface, just goes to show how great valve is. But I’d never imagine leaning towards the ally x over the deck now.
@@SixPathsOfJin makes no sense at all. Just get Ally X for everything? It will support all your games on all launchers and isn't locked down to 1 companys ecosystem.
Why would you consider kneecapping one platform to 15w 'fair'? It has a larger battery so it can last the same amount of time at a higher wattage with better performance, or much longer at the same wattage, likely still with better performance. Not sure what is 'fair' about the comparison as you ran it here.
Ally X will blow the steam deck out the water if he didn’t bottleneck its performance and allow it to run at it’s maximum power. That’s like taking a PlayStation 5 down to PlayStation 3
So as you can see from FH5 there will always be some sort of issues and weirdness on SteamDeck due to compatibility layers. Windows is king for gaming and Ally X is king of handhelds. I'll take occasional Windows UI yank any day when it means all my games and launchers will function perfectly.
Tired of people sayin that the sd is even competition... even if the deck get better performance at low wattage. Ally top power is better and more games are compatible. Ally is still a windows pc as the deck runs linux. Imo windows is king (albeit a little janky sometimes.) Point is is that the ally is overall a more versatile product. Its not only a gaming handset but a whole pc handset. For the haters i already know about the decks desktop mode. But thats only applicable if you actually prefer linux to windows.
@n64slayer No, deck oled has 50wh and ally x has 80wh. That is not half the battery, and the ally x is about 38% more expensive lmao. The ally x's gpu also bottlenecks the cpu so fps fluctuations are very common, whereas the deck's is nice and stable. This comes from a former ally owner btw lol
@n64slayer Lower native res means you get better performance without sacrificing quality on a large scale, and 30hz difference at that range isn't noticeable on a handheld :P
As a deck owner, I think the Ally X is the best handheld out right now. Better processor, 1080p screen with VRR, and a big battery. Me personally though, 90% of the games I own are on steam, I don’t want w11, and SD is basically the gameboy of pc handhelds. I’m happy with my purchase.
I personally think that bench-marking at resolutions other than native for handheld PCs is unrealistic. Native resolution is part of the performance of this type of device.
Yes it can! A RUclipsr by the name of CPPC TEK has confirmed that you can fit double sided SSDs with ease and with a heatsink as well. So yea, you can put up to 8TB of storage
That’s the thing I love about the steam deck, it’s an easy pick and go type of thing. If I want to play AAA games for the more demanding processing power, I got my pc for that.
Yes, the Rog Ally X is good, but I'm still salty over my SD card being wonky and Asus' support being weak. If in 3 months I don't hear of any hardware/software issues, THEN I may consider upgrading.
The only thing missing from the Ally for me to make the switch is OLED and better Standby (Microsoft get your shit together goddamn). Capacitive Joysticks would also be nice. I hope they at least put in an OLED screen with the next iteration that will also use the RDNA4 chip. Pretty excited for that ngl.
@@Glotttis I still wish for it, it's a drawback I can live with. I've been using OLED TVs as monitors since the CX and I never noticed the flickering. If my next OLED VRR handheld is noticeably flickering I will simply turn VRR off and lock my framerate. People are recommending the Steam Deck OLED over the Ally because of the screen despite it's lack of VRR. I never want to use IPS again for anything but work.
If every device is going to be compared with SteamDeck when it comes out,you should definitely know which one sets the standard and which one should you buy
I have the normal ROG ally and from experience 1080p really makes the ally screen much better than even the OLED imo. But steamOS is really good for handheld as windows even if you're not running games will be drawing 3-5w passively, which is a big deal.
@@MrMrdt I have it too and the screen is fantastic. I was hesitant cause so many were saying it wasn't that bright or it was lacking but I see how sharp it is and love it plus the speakers are phenomenal.
I've still got the OG ROG Ally, and I love it. I think I'm gonna wait a generation before upgrading because I'm not really interested in the games that won't run on it.
Just to be clear, the SteamDeck does NOT lock you to only valve's ecosystem. I have Gog Galaxy, Epic, and others on my deck, plus have it dual-booting on Windows 11 for the rare situations where I absolutely can't use Proton, though ime it gives better performance than Windows.
@@Vegan_Lifting I use GeForce Now on it too all the time, haha. But yeah, that too can be integrated right in with the dashboard and have those games right in with the Steam ones and Epic ones etc. I just wanted to make sure people wouldn't choose not to get either one of them if they don't have the $800 but could do $549, as I LOVE my SteamDeck, and have had almost no problem with games noy running well enough, even when listed as "unsupported" officially, haha. I'm all for getting either one that you prefer, but I'm sticking with SD for the touchpads. Those are what made it viable for me. I can use the sticks to move and the touchpads to aim precisely, just like with a trackball. If Asus had them... I'd have 2 handhelds just for the beefier CPU in one, haha. But if I had to choose again... SteamDeck or wait for SD2 since we're due one at some point, it being 2 years now... It changed how I game, and made it a lot more fun again for me.
Great content. But I think a more relatable comparison is having each of them rendering its own screen resolution, 800p for SD and 1080p for AllyX. This is how we are gonna use them with any way
depends as many ally users like to run at 900p instead of 1080p but would be nice to see how the ally x compares at 900p and 1080p vs the sd oled as well for sure.
I have a Steam Deck LCD, and honestly, if it can run the games I play (mostly offline RPG's and some fighting games), I can't justify the $800 investment in a ROG Ally X or nearly the same price on an overpriced gray-market SD oled (I live in Chile btw). At least the Ally X is not burning SD cards, i guess?.
I agree with everything you said, I own a steam deck oled as well, And as much as I try to talk myself into buying a Rog ally X for $799. I can’t justify it for myself being that the SD Oled does everything I need it to do with indie games and emulation.
@@williedee1003 Honestly, I'm looking at this comments section and the comments sections for other videos comparing the SD Oled and the Rog Ally X and I can't believe there's THIS many people so keen to play modern AAA slop on a portable handheld. In Canada the Ally X is 60% (Or $464) more expensive than the Steam Deck OLED that I purchased. Personally, I will stick my OG Ally and SD OLED until the Ally 2.
The Ally X is the device to go against now..... I think it blows away the Deck with performance and it has enough battery to keep up with even the best of them. Nice design. The OLED is a nice display but, 120hz and VRR on the Ally X is for sure a game changer.. My Deck is 2tb, dual booting so I can play Call of Duty games and Gamepass games, getting best of both worlds (if you care, 1.2tb for Steam and 725gb for Windows 11 dual booting with clover). At this point of the game, I am very tempted to sell my deck with a ton of stuff (docks, case, tons of extras) for an Ally X..... after all, I could run all my Steam games on Windows...... You don't need SteamOS to run every steam game....
The ROG looks enticing, but the SD hasn’t given me a reason to look elsewhere. For the price you can get almost 3 entry based steam decks for the price of one ROGX.
I can definitely tell the difference. I can even tell the difference w/ FSR quality at 1080p. Native 1080P all the way. If I can't play native, game doesn't get installed. @@ChampagneOppa
Also the price difference. Ally X looks really good though. Might be appealing if it goes on sale during the holidays just like the OG Ally did last year.

I could be wrong, but i feel that when comparing the display it was not said that the oled panel in the steam deck does not support vrr and the rog ally x ips panel includes vrr. It's a shame because vrr is an important feature 🤷♂️✌️
What sells me on the ROG over the Steam Deck is that you can use an external GPU on the ROG. So, I could connect my ROG to something like a Gigabyte 4090 Gaming Box at home and play 4k with everything maxed out. The Steam Deck unfortunately doesn't have that ability.
I love the steamdeck. But it only supports 1080p 60 fps with geforce now. That's a dealbreaker for me. I love geforce now on the ally. To play 1080p 120 fps on handheld mode and 4k 120 fps docked on my tv is a dream.
Buy the Asus ROG Ally X if: you have PC games across multiple libraries, you’re used to tinkering, can forgive the messiness of the OS in the face of increased performance and power efficiency, and want a VRR display. Buy the Steam Deck OLED if: you just want an easy-to-use handheld with a great screen, plenty of games, and an incredibly simple UI. You can go more intricate with tweaks to make it better for you with the Linux desktop mode, but to play this system, you never need to interact with this side of things.
is the fact that you are limiting the ally x to the same wattage as the deck not kinda unfair instead ? i mean the whole point of getting the ally x is that it has more raw power so if you really wanna know how they stack up you kinda have to pit them against each other when they are at their strongest and see what differences that makes right ?
3 месяца назад+2
No because you want to test the performance on a certain power level. The most important thing in a handheld is battery life. Sure, a test showing what it can deliver at max is also required. But you primarily want to see what it can deliver at a certain wattage. You can always make devices that draw more power, but the only limiting factor in a handheld is how long you can deliver it. 15W is a sweet spot that allows for decent battery life with the nowdays 100Wh limit. Basically, you have to design the tests around the most important metric. In a handheld, that is battery and performance / watt. In contrary, for desktop gpu it is raw performance, because power draw doesen't matter. Raw performance tests on a handheld are just as important but they do not make a good comparison. You can't test for performance and battery life (2 metrics) without having a common denominator and then make a comparison. You need to either lock the performance, energy consumption or battery life for a comparison. Otherwise you will have 3 changing variables that you can't really compare.
i still think there should have been a showcase of both devices at their maximum aswell like fair enough to try and handicap one to match the other but if i wanted to know which one to get i would also like to see how they stack up when allowed to push for their max ability right ?
3 месяца назад+1
@@gmoddude12 Yeah, the max performance should also be listed. Realistically, there is not really a "max ability" on a battery powered device. The more you increase performance, the less the batterty will last and vice versa. Battery and performance have like a combined score. The more you give one, the more you have to take from the other. For some, max abiulity may be 95% battery and 5% performance. For others, it is 95% performance and 5% battery. Knowing the max performance of the device is definitely needed for knowing how powerful it is. But it is not useful for comparing any real world battery drain scenario.
Why would you lower the TDP of the Rog Ally in these tests? You're taking away one of its biggest advantages, which is that you can increase the TDP, to make Steam Deck not look as bad.
The ally x is twice the price - My only struggle is that I can't do anything less than an OLED screen. It's too late now. I already got a taste of OLED. I can't go back. Great job by Asus. They managed to cramp a bigger battery in there without making the X too heavy. These handhelds solved battery challenges quicker than I thought they would. Now they just need to make more efficient chips down the line. It's not all about power.

Real! like it's called a "handheld" pc for gaming" and people forget that and treat it like only a console instead of a pc because of the fact it's not good at actual pc stuff imo, like if I wanted a console I would just buy one, and I already have a ps5 so no point😅

I have an LCD steam deck I bought before the OLED became available. Didn’t bother me because the gameplay was great and I can sit on the couch versus at a computer. Noticed AAA games now are a little harder to run. Since I have a steam deck, should I upgrade to Ally X since the performance gains in the OLED is minimal?
Locking one down to 15W when it's max is 25W and 30W...vs one whose max is 15W isn't a fair comparison. We all know the Deck chip is more efficient...but the ROG chip is faster when given the juice it allows.
It’s not fair to talk about the Ally X being more expensive and then run it at 15 watts, showing it’s just a little faster than the OLED, we’re starting to compare apples and oranges now, just say the Ally X is now the best handheld and wait for Steamdeck 2. The Oled can barely play the latest games anymore and it’s only just over 6 months old.
Rog ally x should’ve been what the rog ally was at 2023. Actual good battery life and a 2280 ssd expansion just to have 4tb on it and it would’ve replaced my steam deck…
Asus is not the company it was when we still used Socket 7. Imagine having double, DOUBLE!, the specs and just being 10-15% better than the other handheld... We are better off with Valve right now.

I'm definitely getting the ROG Ally X.
But people may want to know how much the Ally X beats the SDO by.

The difference between 800p and 1080p is big though.
The Steam Deck OLED display has no VRR...Only the Ally, Ally X and MSI Claw have a VRR display.

Compare performance for a given battery life is more applicable than performance per TDP. So telling me one device will play @1080p/60fps vs 800p/40hz for 3 hrs helps my buying decision more than which device offers the best performance @15watts TDP.

In Canada the Ally X is 60% (Or $464) more expensive than the Steam Deck OLED that I purchased. Personally, I will stick my OG Ally and SD OLED until the Ally 2.
I wonder how much better the battery life on the Ally X would be if it had Steam OS
You can run steam OS on it if you wanted
Not much
It's no different. SteamOS does not grant better battery life. It's all down to the chip
Rog ally x is so good i can't wait 😍
So now we wait for a legion go refresh the legion go is for my usecase the best handheld wonderful comparion between the two's
Ally X? No rear buttons?? No trackpads??? No fanx... Ima wait for the Deck 2
It has rear buttons
The ROG looks enticing, but the SD hasn’t given me a reason to look elsewhere. For the price you can get almost 3 entry based steam decks for the price of one ROGX.
This "weird" thing in forza you've mentioned is a half-rate shading. Disable it and it will be just fine. Know what setting you're changing, mate
I love your review comparison. Most videos about these are just talking heads and no numbers.
900p is the sweet spot for the ally
1080p with FSR quality or balanced is the sweet spot at 20W TDP and 3hrs battery
@genio5311 i get about 5-6 hours battery 900p at 17w. On a little screen you can barely tell the difference 900p to 1080p.
I can definitely tell the difference. I can even tell the difference w/ FSR quality at 1080p. Native 1080P all the way. If I can't play native, game doesn't get installed. @@ChampagneOppa
@OC.TINYYY must have bionic eyes. You understand when using an upscaler its not native anymore right?
@@ChampagneOppa
people are hilariously so picky over resolution on a 7.4 inch screen lol.
Why are you afraid to say it loud that Ally X has clearly won this time? Is it because of the vocal fanboys?
Everyone is against Asus since their whole warranty issue. But I never had any issues with my original Ally.
Also the price difference. Ally X looks really good though. Might be appealing if it goes on sale during the holidays just like the OG Ally did last year.
Doesnt mean anything if Asus aftersale service is terrible, no matter how good their hardware is
Shut up Asus fanboy
@@arya3966asus fanboy? Its clear the rog won on everything exept not having oled screen, but the screen has better res, hz and vrr so its better anyway😂 asus is not the only company with ass customer support, doesnt take away that the rog x is better in everything over the deck anyway, wake up asus hater
1:49 - its like Asus decided to "one-up" every last spec in the steam deck just to stomp on it in every way possible!
I could be wrong, but i feel that when comparing the display it was not said that the oled panel in the steam deck does not support vrr and the rog ally x ips panel includes vrr. It's a shame because vrr is an important feature 🤷♂️✌️
ROG ALLY X > ROG ALLY Z1 EXTREME > STEAM DECK OLED > STEAM DECK LCD
MONEY VALUE : STEAM DECK LCD > ROG ALLY Z1 EXTREME > ROG ALLY X > STEAM DECK OLED
That’s stupid
What sells me on the ROG over the Steam Deck is that you can use an external GPU on the ROG. So, I could connect my ROG to something like a Gigabyte 4090 Gaming Box at home and play 4k with everything maxed out. The Steam Deck unfortunately doesn't have that ability.
@@MyFatherLoves yes it does, you can stream games from steam and your PC is doing all the work.
I don’t care for keeping it fair for comparisons. I want to see what each can do at its best.
I love the steamdeck. But it only supports 1080p 60 fps with geforce now. That's a dealbreaker for me. I love geforce now on the ally. To play 1080p 120 fps on handheld mode and 4k 120 fps docked on my tv is a dream.
As an oled sd owner, I'd surely buy the ally x if it had an oled screen.
my take on this, steam deck if you already got a gaming pc, if not then ally x
Buy the Asus ROG Ally X if: you have PC games across multiple libraries, you’re used to tinkering, can forgive the messiness of the OS in the face of increased performance and power efficiency, and want a VRR display.
Buy the Steam Deck OLED if: you just want an easy-to-use handheld with a great screen, plenty of games, and an incredibly simple UI. You can go more intricate with tweaks to make it better for you with the Linux desktop mode, but to play this system, you never need to interact with this side of things.
Steam Deck Oled is my pick. Subjective, as you said.
I don't have any handheld PC to date but I might just wait for a steam deck 2 if it ever comes out next year
Steam deck 2 is coming in 2026
is the fact that you are limiting the ally x to the same wattage as the deck not kinda unfair instead ?
i mean the whole point of getting the ally x is that it has more raw power
so if you really wanna know how they stack up you kinda have to pit them against each other when they are at their strongest and see what differences that makes right ?
Otherwise you will have 3 changing variables that you can't really compare.
i still think there should have been a showcase of both devices at their maximum aswell
like fair enough to try and handicap one to match the other but if i wanted to know which one to get
i would also like to see how they stack up when allowed to push for their max ability right ?
@@gmoddude12 Yeah, the max performance should also be listed.
Realistically, there is not really a "max ability" on a battery powered device.
The more you increase performance, the less the batterty will last and vice versa.
Battery and performance have like a combined score. The more you give one, the more you have to take from the other.
For some, max abiulity may be 95% battery and 5% performance. For others, it is 95% performance and 5% battery.
Knowing the max performance of the device is definitely needed for knowing how powerful it is. But it is not useful for comparing any real world battery drain scenario.
LOOK AT THE TEMPERATURE. THE DIFFERENCE IS 30 DEGREE !!! ASUS IS CRAZY
I'll go for the power! Steam Deck power hold me back for buying it
Why would you lower the TDP of the Rog Ally in these tests? You're taking away one of its biggest advantages, which is that you can increase the TDP, to make Steam Deck not look as bad.
The ally x is twice the price - My only struggle is that I can't do anything less than an OLED screen. It's too late now. I already got a taste of OLED. I can't go back.
Great job by Asus. They managed to cramp a bigger battery in there without making the X too heavy. These handhelds solved battery challenges quicker than I thought they would.
Now they just need to make more efficient chips down the line. It's not all about power.
YES!!!... comparisons are here...
If you have a gaming PC or console: Steam Deck OLED
If it will be your primary gaming device: ROG Ally X
Or just get the ally x for both
@@Fancy405 It's more feasible now with better eGPU support.
If you have a PC and a Xbox: Ally because you have Xbox Game Pass and Play Anywhere. So you can play your Xbxo Game on the Ally. :) I have the Ally and Love it.
It keeps surprising me how the deck gets a pass for being a very limited pc experience.
Real! like it's called a "handheld" pc for gaming" and people forget that and treat it like only a console instead of a pc because of the fact it's not good at actual pc stuff imo, like if I wanted a console I would just buy one, and I already have a ps5 so no point😅
It’s only limited if you don’t put the work in, it’s a computer not a Nintendo Switch.
@@thegixlad27 bold to assume pc experience has to be "hard to use" or "put in alot of work" nope there is different types of os's mac os and windows makes it easy to the users and are why they are the most popular Linux does not and does the things you described to use even basic functionality
People looking for handheld gaming devices likely already have a gaming PC. I don't need to play the newest and greatest AAA slop on a handheld, that's what my gaming PC is for, which is where I also do my VR gaming.
@@Space97. The point is being a portable console??
The Oled can barely play the latest games anymore and it’s only just over 6 months old.
steamdeck for its oled screen, rma support and trackpads. also I hate windows
@@tvh369 Software on the Ally is fine. It's the Legion Go where it sucks
@@tvh369 handheld devices aren't meant for pushing the envelope, that's what gaming PCs are for.
RIP buying multiplatform AAA games for Switch 2. Handheld PC's and Steam Deck 2 have stolen the spotlight away from Switch 2 and Android handhelds.
Rog ally x should’ve been what the rog ally was at 2023. Actual good battery life and a 2280 ssd expansion just to have 4tb on it and it would’ve replaced my steam deck…
Don't know if others have said this but around the 3:10 mark you state that the Deck Oled has VRR which I do not believe to be the case.
Asus is not the company it was when we still used Socket 7. Imagine having double, DOUBLE!, the specs and just being 10-15% better than the other handheld... We are better off with Valve right now.
