    I found one of these in my fathers barn, which is absolutely stuffed with old tools ... It’s a older model, I believe 1955 ...mod # 103.22350 .. It runs great, but I don’t have the 9 inch sanding wheel for it.. The motor is set in a different position, right under the top 6”in cylinder table top..
    I need some belts, so I’m hoping I can find some at one of the local hardware stores..
    I can probably fabricate a new 9”in ETC disc for it ..
    Another issue I found is that the original spinning cylinders are supposed to have a rubber coating on them, looks around an 1/8 inch or less.. Idk, I guess some gorilla tape and a heat gun may work..
    The motor doesn’t seem to have enough balls, so I may put something a little bigger on it as well..
    Thanks for your video.. It gives me a couple ideas, in regards of a stand etc..

    I've got the exact same machine that I scored off CL but it was in like new condition for $85. I added casters on all four corners and a new longer power cord. This thing is built like a tank.

    I've got the same sander. When I got mine it was missing the motor altogether and the stand was in rough shape.
    I opted to mount mine on an older Craftsman stand from the 60's. Its more portable with wheels at one end.
    When I looked up what motor it came with it looked like the standard motor was a 1/2hp, so I mounted up a fresh rebuilt Craftsman 1/2hp table saw motor. The thing is very under powered. It'll stall with just the weight of a 12" length of 2x4.
    I'm in the process of upgrading to a newer 3/4hp but from what I'm told that may not be enough either.
    Due to the direction the belt needs to turn, my easy options are limited since most single phase motors turn the wrong way.
    I find myself using my $200 no name Chinese sander instead most of the time. The Chinese sander has a small motor mounted right below the unit that's no more than 4" in diameter and its nearly impossible to stall.

      Could you make a figure 8 with the belt to turn pulley opposite direction!?

      I’m in the same boat..lol Mine has a 1/4 hp .. But I haven’t bought any belts for it yet..I literally just found it in my fathers hoarder barn.. Mine is older than what he’s showing on the video.. I believe it’s from the late 50’s.. Though the motor is definitely newer.. It sits directly under the table top cylinder , then the belt runs back to where the 9” inch sander is supposed to be (it’s missing) which spins thee other cylinder.. I seen in some pics that it’s supposed to have a rubber like material around the two cylinders.. This is bare metal, with brass sides .. I’m thinking some gorilla tape shall do, at least I’m hoping.. I’m going to have fabricate a 9” inch or less disc for the side .. But for now it’s finding a belt and seeing if the motor has enough balls.. lol

    Last week, I bought its immediate predecessor a 113-22521 on Offer Up for $35. Did I need it? Well....now I do. It came with 6 belts and a stack of sanding discs, so the sander was essentially free. I was concerned about the drum bearings, but they are dual sealed and they roll smoothly with just the right amount of friction. Switch and motor are fine. It was owned by a shop teacher who kept it in decent shape. 3-76 date of manufacture. Currently in a state of disassembly to clean all of the sawdust out and re-bue some of the fasteners. And yes, these units were NOT designed for easy adjustment or maintenance. But they are IRON!
    I might make a drilled and tapped back plate for the motor mount screws, as that will eliminate the back side wrench. And a mod to the lower belt cover. They had ONE JOB and they screwed it up. I think I'll cut the back side off and possibly make a QD back side strap so that it will not fall off forward, since only spring clips hold it in place. But heck, it's been in place for FIFTY ONE YEARS! WTH?
    How has that thing been treating you?

    I bought one of them new-in-box at an estate sale. Owner must have been a Craftsman tool hoarder because this wasn’t the only tool that was new. I recently assembled mine (model 113.225931) and all the bags of hardware were dated march of 1990. I gave up trying to mount the motor with the confuckulated guard. But I was able to mount the motor well by using a 14 inch screwdriver to pry down on the motor using the mount slats.
    Tracking is kinda funky for the 6 by 48” belt, but I think I figured it out.

    • @HAL9000-su1mz
      @HAL9000-su1mz 7 месяцев назад

      Long 5/32" allen key from directly above through an access hole when the screw points straight up. There are two screws: one visible which holds the drive belt pulley. You can leave that alone. THe disc screw is under the cover and visible from an access hole directly above it. Remove the screw and spray some penetrating oil and let it sit. Or, judicious use of propane torch to expand the disc at the hub and some wiggling - not prying - from the edge of the disc. Once the screw is out ( it seats in a slot and must be removed) you can pull on the edges of the disc while someone taps the shaft with a brass or aluminum drift punch. I was able to budge it loose from underneath using a large slot-headed screw driver. But don't pry the plastic shield or the drive pulley!

    I just got one of these. It was refurbished with a new motor and all, but I've got a problem I can't figure out. It bogs down very easily with the slightest sanding on the belt. The drive belt it tight. It has a 1 hp motor on it. Any thoughts on why?

    Just bought one of these on CL. Had to pay a little more than others, but seems to work well with strong motor and no issues. Looks like these never had dust collection for the belt?? Anyone retrofit a shroud with port? Are Velcro pads for the 9” disc readily available? Thanks!

      Hey mark, they sure do have a dust collection system. Mine has one, and you can find it in the owners manual online. I'm not too sure about the effectiveness of it though, as I'm waiting for a new shop vac to test it

    I found this sander on the side of the road, without the stand. I mounted it to an old ob/gyn table to make a sanding station and it all works okay but the motor is so underpowered. I think I may have to hunt down a bigger motor, not too bad for free though

    • @jeffreyhunterbuilder

      Yes the motor is under powered, I like your creativeness mounting it to an ob/gyn table.

      I did pretty much the same thing. I found an old 6x48 belt sander at roadside, minus the disc, mounted to a handmade wooden box. To save garage space, I cleaned it up and remounted it on the same rolling pedestal as my bandsaw. That tool only has a 1/4 HP motor, not enough grunt for this, but eventually I'll find a 1/2 HP motor, perhaps from a discarded washing machine.

    I just got a sander like that. My desk is missing on mine. I’m having trouble setting the tracking on it. You have any hints are you sir? I appreciate it. Thank you.

    • @jeffreyhunterbuilder
      @jeffreyhunterbuilder  Год назад

      As far as the tracking goes, this generation of grinder is very hard to set, I set one side at a time just moving the adjustment a 16th of an inch at a time, it will never be right on but you can get it close, it is a very tedious process, good luck.

      The motor will have to be pulled apart, I need to pull this one apart as well, I will be putting together a video on it, hope yours isn't to damaged, it could be jammed with saw dust, it's hard to say until you have a look inside.

      You loosen the 12mm bolts next to the belt guard and tip it up and re tighten the 2 bolts ,take the table off the disc side and put it in the mounting hole for the big belt ! Mine says it was made by JET -No reference to Sears !

    what about a dust collector mod, can this model be converted to a vertical sander? maybe I am stupid but the process to change the drive belt is horribly complicated, not the sanding belt thats easy.

      The one I found is sitting on wood, nicely done.. Someone built a box or frame like thing out of 2x4’s or 6’s It runs the same length as the cast unit.. Idk exactly what type of board was used, because I can’t see it, the unit is sitting on top.. I can just see the corners cut, like a picture frame.. Then that sits on two planks of wood, looks like 1x 12’s
      This bottom platform is about a foot longer than the one mentioned above.. The motor sits at the end , directly under the cylinder, then the belt goes up to the other cylinder where the 9 in disc is at.. (which I’m missing the disc) but will fabricate one or smaller.. There is a light switch connected on the wood the unit sits on.. 2 coming out of the under powered motor, 2 coming out, which is a plug.. Just an idea for you, so you don’t have to worry about a stand and messing with the drive belt.. Idk it maybe an easier solution if you can picture what I wrote..lol
      I was going to put it on a metal stand, until I read it’s a bitch in regards of the drive belt.. I just need to find a bigger motor, this 1/4 GE doesn’t seem to have enough balls.. I haven’t even bought a sanding belt yet, and know it’s way too weak when I flipped on the switch.. ..
