Yeah, as I was recording this and thinking about how we don't see Jecht's whole story it did strike me that a prequel of Auron, Braska and Jecht journeying through Spira could be amazing.
This would be great. Even though I really like the oldschool turn based style of 10 I wouldnt mind a fast paced action style where you play as Jecht, Braska, and Auron. Maybe its action control style with combos and such but with a pause button that lets you input combos for the other 2 characters you arent controling at the time. Like you pause, tell Braska to summon an Aeon/use white or black magic, tell Auron to break armor, etc, and then unpause and they do all that while you run around with Jecht manually comboing off attacks. This way you have turn based and action at the same time. Or maybe when you summon an Aeon you take control of it only and run around with it action stlyle while the other 3 men become turn based / auto attack.
Something interesting about Jecht you left out. When little Tidus is talking about Jecht's drinking, he mentions that he doesn't show up to practice anymore. Jecht says he doesn't need to practice. However, Jecht was originally taken when he was practicing alone at sea. It shows that Jecht has a facade. He wants everyone to think his skill is just raw talent when it's not.
In Jecht's official Bio, it says: (He had been criticized as hating to practice. However, looking at the actual fact that he repeatedly went out to train at sea, it may be that he thought it was bad form to reveal that he was working hard and was covering up the truth. It can also be thought that those self-confident words of “I’m the best” arose from having personality wherein he couldn’t maintain his confidence unless he bragged).
Really facinating video. I remember playing this game as a kid and the story between Tidus and Jecht really hit home. My father is an alcoholic too (tho less abusive as Jecht was) so I really identified with Tidus' struggle, its one of the reasons why I love him so much as a protagonist. Now that I'm older tho, even tho I still very deeply empathise with Tidus, I also recognize how complex a character Jecht is. He isn't just an abusive father, but he has his own struggles and failures that he deals with. It's just unfortunately that, in the guise of tough love, he ends up just kind of taking his frustrations out on his child. I subbed recently but this video got me to comment. Your content is fantastic and I really hope you get some more exposure soon because your analysis videos are all very high quality content. :)
Thanks for the comment and sharing your story. It's fascinating how FF can relate on so many levels to different people. And as you've noted, as time passes you can acknowledge aspects of character and story in perhaps slightly different ways. Anyway, glad you liked the analysis, thanks for subscribing too.
Ject and his story with Tidus overlap a lot with Zach Fair and Cloud. We witness people reluctantly following the footsteps of another, more experienced person with which they share deep connections, and tragic endings, maybe even shared loves/friendships. I wonder how a FFX prequel would play out... thematically, it would be nice to see how problematic characteristics get ironed out in a coming of age style story. I'm not sure it NEEDS to be told; but, there might be some interest.
Yeah as I recorded I did wonder about a prequel - it has the potential to be amazing, humorous, tragic - everything you might expect from such a strong set of FF characters in the Spira setting. As you say though, does it really NEED to be told? The allure and intrigue of Jecht in FFX is that he's so elusive and unknowable in certain ways; what's left unsaid is sometimes more powerful as a narrative experience. Also, that's a good observation about the Zack and Cloud parallels, I'd never really considered it from that angle before!
I'm so glad this is a big analysis :) no one usually studies jecht just Kefka or sephiroth ( I do love them both) but it's nice to see others now and then
Thanks. Yeah I'm a big fan of Sephiroth and Kefka too, but as you say, they're popular almost to the detriment of other antagonists. I have Kuja lined up for discussion soon actually. He's a guy I never particularly paid attention to on my first playthroughs of 9... I barely even mentioned him in my review, but I played through it again this year and he's a really interesting dude.
Jecht got twisted a lot in Tidus' memories. He was a past prime alcoholic, but also "a kind, gentle man" as Yuna said. Tidus meeting Jecht once again was really touching. He hated and loved Jecht all in one.
The 'can't hack it anymore' theory actually IS evidenced in the game, during the scene where he volunteers to be Braska's aeon. He says something along the lines of 'I might as well make myself useful whilst I still have some form of youth left.'
@@AlleywayJack I mean, of course, I'm horrendously misrepresenting what he actually says, but if you rewatch that scene, you definitely get those sorts of vibes ☺ Great work on the video by the way, this sort of thing is what I've been looking for a while for 👍
I think the scars on jechts body are a physical way of showing that perhaps he has his own level of pain and hardship that he himself had to overcome. And maybe that’s why his relationship with tidus is one of tough love, to display an air of “strength through adversity”. He may not have fully overcome these things though as he turns to alcoholism to somewhat numb the pain. I always wanted to know what scarred his body so much, but I think this is important to understand a little about the man.
Beautiful vid, I think jecht is a great example of one of the story’s great themes, we should take things as a sum of their parts and not just cling to one’s we like or don’t.
Great analysis! I know you touched on Seifer Almasy in your FFVIII analysis, but it would be great if you could dive into the character more as he's one of my favorites in that game, and there's a lot to his character that we don't see explicitly in the main game, similar to Jecht.
Thanks! Yeah Seifer is one of my favourites too, and I will discuss him and a few others again in dedicated episodes eventually. It's just a matter of time and getting some other stuff recorded that I've been sat on for awhile. I'm glad you liked the analysis :)
I really find it curious how dream people such as Jecht and Tidus are able to interact with the real world so much, to the extent that Jecht can become the final aeon, and Sin. I also wonder if there's a reason written down anywhere about how Jecht was able to cross over to Spira in the first place.
Nice observations that I haven't seen discussed very often. I always felt that it was down to Sin being such a powerful entity it could traverse realms, both real and fabricated (after all Aaron used it to visit dream Spira too). Sin is a metaphor for death- the ultimate reality, so could basically traverse anything. Whether Jecht was a mistaken 'chosen one' who was supposed to end the cycle of Sin (much like Anakin Skywalker) or whether he just came into contact by accident, it set all the events into motion for FFX. But I always figured Jecht failing and Tidus succeeding was borrowing the fated 'prophecy ' idea from Star Wars where Anakin goes bad and becomes the very force he wanted to defeat, and his son Luke (Tidus) has to conquer him.
Pretty sure most cant at all, and that Tidus and Jecht are the exceptions. I was under the impression that Jecht was "made real" by the fayth. Tidus we know ended up in Spira because he was "touched" by Sin
@@BroadwayRonMexico That's an idea. Tidus is guided by the Fayth lightly throughout the game, mostly Bahamut. They mention how tired they are of dreaming, so perhaps they are responsible for Jecht and, by extension, Tidus as some sort of long term plan to end the cycle.
Dream people are basically aeons, dream zanarkand was summoned along with everyone in it, thus they’re all part of an aeon and the aeons have physical form, yu yevon is the fayth they’re born from
Jecht reminds me of Christopher Titus' anti dad routine. "Where there is hope, I will stop it! When confidence rears its' shiny head, will be there to kick it in the testicles! Anti dad!"
Lol Jesus Christ dude, I’ve played this game through so many times, love it to death, never 4:56 realized the Oedipal thing and it’s probably cause I’ve always wanted to ignore it lol

I'd be 100% down for a FFX prequel with Braska and Co. as opposed to any more sequels. Great vid!
Yeah, as I was recording this and thinking about how we don't see Jecht's whole story it did strike me that a prequel of Auron, Braska and Jecht journeying through Spira could be amazing.
I think back in the day it would've been a good idea but i think they would screw it up nowadays
This would be great. Even though I really like the oldschool turn based style of 10 I wouldnt mind a fast paced action style where you play as Jecht, Braska, and Auron. Tidus is the "unreliable narrator" when it comes to Jecht.
This was a very interesting video on a very underrated character.
Thanks glad you liked it :)
Underrated? He's a fan favorite. That's like saying Auron is "underrated".
@@TooLameToDie what makes you think he is?

All three. Jecht is my fave ff 10 character. Second and third being lulu and auron
My absolute favorite FF character 💯💪🏾
I'd love to see a prequel movie for FFX that follows Braska's Pilgramage.
I'd love that either as a movie or a game. FFX was great and character building Jecht/Auron/Braska even though they weren't seen much on-screen.
I love jecht
