If you flip the carpet tool over it will give more suction for picking up stubborn bits, I am guessing the motor is only 300 watts? so won't be as fast as modern one with 1600 or more watts. So even though it was slower picking up it was far better than using a carpet sweeper/floor brush or even taking the carpet outside and beating it Back then vacuum cleaners were luxury items as were fridges/washing machines and televisions. Modern cleaners with 700 watt or so motors have newly designed motors to double or even triple the suction, I have just bought a new Electrolux which has a 700 watt motor and is more powerful than my 1600 watt motor vacuum
