The line "I was born in a crossfire hurricane", was written by Richards, and refers to his being born amid the bombing and air raid sirens of Dartford, England, in 1943 during World War II.

    From Wikipedia, about this song:
Keith Richards has stated that he and Jagger wrote the lyrics while staying at Richards' country house, when they were awoken one morning by the clumping footsteps of his gardener Jack Dyer walking past the window. Surprised, Jagger asked what it was, and Richards responded: "Oh, that's Jack - that's jumpin' Jack." The lyrics evolved from there.[8][9] Humanities scholar Camille Paglia[10] speculated that the song's lyrics might have been partly inspired by William Blake's poem "The Mental Traveller": "She binds iron thorns around his head / And pierces both his hands and feet / And cuts his heart out of his side / To make it feel both cold & heat."
Jagger said in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone that the song arose "out of all the acid of Satanic Majesties. It's about having a hard time and getting out. Just a metaphor for getting out of all the acid things."
According to the book Keith Richards: The Biography by Victor Bockris, the line "I was born in a crossfire hurricane", was written by Richards, and refers to his being born amid the bombing and air raid sirens of Dartford, England, in 1943 during World War II.

Back in high school in the early seventies we couldn’t get enough of this song and we sang our heats out. Our school paper was called Jumpin’ Jack Flash in their honour 😎😎😎

The live version is definitely fun and filled with energy, but I think you should give the radio single version a try. A lot more harmonies and a bit tighter. It doesn't age, it is pumped with youthful energy and fun 🥳

To be honest, there's a generation or two that never understood what the lyrics even were, never mind what they meant. Jagger's vocals on the studio version are pretty much indecipherable. This live version was filmed in late 1968 but never was released to the public until 1995, so prior to that no one really knew what the hell Mick was singing. There's a classic scene from the 1986 movie Jumpin' Jack Flash where Whoopi Goldberg listens to the studio version over and over, trying to decipher the lyrics, and finally in frustration yells "Mick! Speak English!!!!""

This clip is from the long hidden but now available Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, with performances from The Who, The Dirty Mac (Keith Richards, Eric Clapton John Lennon and Mitch Mitchell), Jethro Tull (featuring a pre-Black Sabbath Tony Iommi), Taj Mahal and others, plus more from The Stones. Shot over two days in December 1968 in London, it was of it's time.

It is a gas just watching you react. But seeing Mick strut his stuff in his prime, and bending the song any damn way he wants, and showing why they will be around for decades, is a Christmas present of rare quality. Thank you. The song has always made people feel good. I guess if he can be alright after all that...so can we. :)
    Gonna watch it again.

Charlie Watts, RIP! PS. That clip is from The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, December 1968. The Stones also play "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Sympathy for the Devil" and Keith Richards plays bass for John Lennon on "Yer Blues". The Who play "A Quick One While He's Away" and Taj Mahal rocks out with "Ain't That a Lot of Love" among other performances.

Classic Mick. My favorite song of theirs had been “Brown Sugar”. But lately I’m more into the older slower tunes like “Time is on my Side”, “Wild Horses”, and “Angie” (I’d play my guitar along to that one seemingly endlessly). Plus, “Shattered”. That one was huge in my school when I was in high school. 💜💜💜

The British loved the blues and rock coming out of the States in the 50's and 60's. The young people wanted something fresh to them and they gravitated to blues artists and upcoming rock and roll. They were tired of the poverty and restrictions lingering from the 2nd World War and wanted something fresh and exciting. Thus, groups like the Stones were born. The Stones were considered the bad boys, while the Beatles could be taken home to mother. London was tough back then and that is some of the reason for the stoic expressions. Are you the first to react to this video? It's the first I have seen on RUclips. Thanks for reacting to this. I enjoyed it. Cheers from Canada

Don't forget that Jagger is a highly intelligent and well educated guy. He qualified to study at the LSE, one of the most prestigious humanities universities in the world, and intended becoming a journalist, possibly as a stepping stone to entering politics. It was only the popularity of the band which made him drop out.

I think at times you take the lyrics of songs too literally or attribute them to the singers actual personal life, when they are artists telling a story, and using terminology of the day. If something was awesome or fun, it was a gas. It’s a term that came from the jazz age, and was first written by James Baldwin in the 1950’s.

    • @naytonestew7202

Yeah, I kinda think of the lyrics of this song as being lyrics from a blues song: "I was born under a bad sign...my mother dropped me in a ditch...my dog took my last meal..." From that perspective, these lyrics can be considered traditional blues lyrics, just twisted a little for the modern audience. So much fun.

Come on how could you never hear of jumping Jack Flash. The Rolling Stones are great. My 78 year old aunt just saw them down in Tampa. I saw them in Philly back in I don't know 76 or 78 something like that it was when the sticky fingers album came out and I actually got up on the stage with Mick Jagger. Concerts were so much different back then. You could smoke you can smoke weed everybody snuck in booze but you danced so much that you didn't get drunk. We were right at the stage and my friends dared me to go on it. They should have known not to DARE me especially when I was drinking and having such a great time. Not too many people can say they were on the stage with Mick Jagger. Of course I got kicked off I only weighed 98 pounds but just the fact that I got to dance on stage with him. And I'm still dancing today that's why I love listening to you. I love your show but you got to play like Wilson Pickett's Mustang Sally or go back to the root of the blues which was the root of rock and roll. That's why the Rolling Stones are so great Mick Jagger is fighting right now with Paul McCartney because Paul McCartney told Jagger that the stones were nothing more than the cover blues Band. Are these two kidding me fighting now. They should be so happy that they're both alive and can still dance they should not be comparing themselves to each other. The Beatles arrived here first. That's because the Rolling Stones were set up by the cops and this is the truth but some kid with a whole bunch of drugs in a suitcase who casually slept out the door when they waited the place and they were going to give or they did give Keith Richards a year in jail and they gave him a Jagger I don't know probation or something because they didn't want them to get visas to come to the USA because they were known as the bad boys of rock and roll all the charges were eventually dismissed but if the Stoned arrived at the same time as the Beatles, who knows what would have happened. I was just going to listen to the Cinemax presentation and it's called Paul Schaefer and Cinemax presents Fats Domino and Friends Jerry Lee Lewis is playing piano Ray Charles is playing piano the fat man's playing piano Ronnie Wood comes out starts playing guitar it's an amazing show. But I think I'm going to listen to the stones now thank you.

At this point they'd been up for the last 48 hours subsisting on various substances. This was them at one of their lowest points, with Brian Jones (guitarist on the left) almost completely lost in addiction and he will be gone from the band and dead in months.

They were born in a ‘crossfire hurricane’. Hitler was bombing them at night when they were born. Which is why he then sings ‘ and, I howled at my ma’ in the driving rain’.

Just love your reaction...I still see Whoopie Goldberg dancing to this song in the movie Jumping Jack Flash..I think she channeled Mick Jagger...😁

You have to see it in context at the times. It was revolutionary then. Here in germany there was just shitty german folk music and we loved the Stones or The Doors as a band against the governments. For us (not really me but my older brother) it was revolution at this time. I was still too young but my brother infected me with this music.

    It’s a new re-mix style called “live!”
Also here’s a new word for you, you don’t like the ‘beat’ of this song, you actually like ‘The GROOVE’ of the song. Groove means rhythm, beat, and guitar riffs all together as one.

My dad was hardcore rock'n'roll but love The Stones - In the last 30 years I think The Verve nearly pulled it off. Check out Slide Away Glastonbury or Life's an Ocean, Jools Holland Live - cheers
