    As a carpenter I agree with you that you just need to either know the person or trust them which only comes by feeling them out. Sometimes jobs like that can blow up in your face if they have no idea what's they're up against. Love the clips it feels like I'm working with you.

    I cant help but think any amount of force at the top of those posts would rip those brackets right out of the floor. Interesting vid though, thank you for the info.

    I had a magnetic bit holder that would constantly leave the bit in the fastener I was driving. Tossed it and bought the Milwaukee brand from Home Depot. I highly recommend it. Retrieving the bit from the fastener and reinstalling it every time is super annoying. I didn’t realize I was doing it until someone pointed it out to me. Might save you “a bit” of time on the job.

    Not being critical, this will turn out great. I do think you should consider to clear coat those handrails for two reasons: Reason 1- Galvanizing is toxic you aren't really meant to be touching those. Nobody in their right mind uses these for water supply anymore(its only where it pre-exists). I have a feeling they are going to give you black hands using them. Black iron wouldn't have been toxic but would still turn your hands black. Reason 2- with use the silvery galvanizing will wear off and look unsightly, with a clear coat will preserve the look as they did when installed. I think they would look incredible chromed but that may be cost prohibitive. Anyways everyone's a RUclips expert. I do exactly what you do here where I live. Have learned a few things from your videos, especially the business related content. Learned I definitely don't charge enough lol. Thank you for your wonderful content.

    I really enjoy your videos, there very informative. Will you be adding any fixing to the first post you installed other than re lying on silicone to attach it to the wall? I feel there is some leverage to be had if any pressure was placed at the top of the post, ie kids leaning/climbing on it (I know they shouldn't, but it happens)

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  6 лет назад

      No. large chunks of the wall will have to be ripped for the post to move.

    Be careful about removing a drill bit by reversing the drill instead of loosening the chuck by hand. I watched my buddy do that and as the bit was dropping out, the chuck caught it and threw it back at him. Had to drive him to the hospital to get stitches on his eye lid.

    Hey brother,
    You mentioned you don’t take credit cards? Is there a reason? I own a mobile business and use square to collect credit card payment. I always just ad the fee in the cost of the job so I do lose on the income.
    Or you could give them the option and inform them there is a “convenience fee” to use a card.
    Let me know. Just curious.

    Great video! Been watching your channel for a while. Just a quick question. Do you ever do larger renovations or do you enjoy sticking with the smaller handyman type projects. I do both but lately I’ve been accepting more whole house renos. There’s times that an extra hand would really help but I still can’t justify the added expense of an employee. Just curious. Thanks!

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  6 лет назад

      I mostly do large renovations. The small stuff is what I have time to edit and put on youtube. As I'm getting older I'm feeling my joint pain a lot more. Starting this year I'm only taking on 6 or 7 larger projects. I have never had an employee since I went self employed. I was a superintendent building houses and condos before that. Managing people in this industry is like baby sitting.

    • @ryandallavia
      @ryandallavia 6 лет назад

      The Handyman Still fairly new to the game so luckily no joint pain yet! I’ve been fortunate enough to be fully booked enough to be able to pick and choose my jobs and am not sure how I can grow without employees. I agree, the bar is set super low. I would be happy just to have someone show up on time and do what they say they are going to do. Would love a q&a series. Thanks !

      don't take on "on the book" employee per se. Hire subcontractors, whoever works for you must bill you independently. then you aren't responsible for their taxes, insurance, training, ect,ect. and if they don't perform, much easier to fire lol

      The Handyman you’re right probably too high to scrutinize, but I think you’ll see it upstairs because of lack of pickets. I would have turned it to face the wall unless the other faces were just as bad or worse?

    None of my co-workers live near me, so I can't ask them. My neighbors are all in the trades themselves and do their own work -- the one is adding a room onto his house with just a few buddies helping him even as I write -- so I can't ask them either. (I have no intention of hiring my neighbors. The one adding a room is a semi-retired HVAC guy and keeps offering to do little jobs for free. It's embarrassing, particularly when he uses his own stock of materials.)
    We do have a kind of referral service, and the last time I hired their guy I guess he was OK. But I feel like he took his time at the beginning of the job and then rushed it at the end. I'd rather someone who was more efficient all around. Plus, I have possibly improperly installed laminate flooring on a staircase, and he didn't seem to know much about it either way, so I don't feel comfortable hiring him to deal with it.

      That's kind of a tough situation. You could see if you have the next door app in your area. Or a similar app. Trial and error is sometimes the only way.

  • @muniznick
    @muniznick 6 лет назад

    On reg customers sometimes I let them buy the materials when they want to save money on them but I still charge a premium price for my work and do not guarantee their materials, I'm a HVAC contractor as my main line of work and I get people wanting me to install used or units bought online I charge them accordingly and tell them upfront/in writing that most online a/c purchases do not come with a reg warranty like contractor bought ones and if they call me for warranty work I will charge them full price, bad enough a/c distributers treat us like lepers when trying to warranty anything much less an online purchase, I'll get laughed out of the building for online warranty stuff. Wonder why you do not take c/c's, I use Square some of the time and just uncharge the svc fee.

      Noconz0727 Ridged has come a long way in the last few years with their cordless tools. 10 years ago they were know as home owner grade tools that no contractor could depend on for day to day use. I had a full set 10 years ago. I ended up selling them all for DeWalts. I use use RIDGID tools and I still burn them up. A good warranty helps when returning them.
