- I did an intro to the Tethrd Mantis Saddle for a friend of mine Tim. He's never used a saddle before so I figured I'd let him try mine out before he considers buying one.
The hunting challenge is all about the journey to self reliance, chasing and embracing God’s creation and serving the next generation.

I’ve found for me it works better to be on the side that the tree is leaning towards instead of the way you had him try it. It helps gravity to not want to swing you off of the platform.
I'll have to try that.
Yea definitely want to set up with the lean instead of against it. Let gravity help you not hurt you or hinder you in any way.
The Mantis is what I started Saddle Hunting with. Great job!

Thank you. He still hasn’t gotten a saddle yet, but that could change at any moment. Some people are slower to make changes than others 😂
Thanks for making the video! I've been looking into these since last season. Not gonna happen this year, but I'm really hoping to give it a whirl for 2021. Nice to see a complete rookie attempt using one and quickly get the hang of it.

I used my saddle to hunt for the first time last two days. I got a young Doe! It's very comfortable but very timely getting up in the tree and setting everything up! You will be sweating! Best advice....have trees already prepped with ladders/steps/spikes.
Mr. Skeptical Thanks for commenting. John Eberhart preps all of his trees post season. I’ve come to learn that trading any tree I need to hunt based on sign vs rushing the sit resulted in a big change in my success rate. However, based on my first year of saddle hunting, prepping trees that I’ve had success in would save time.
Pack out climbing sticks !! It takes me less then 5 minutes to get completely set

@@thehuntingchallenge of course! I have the 3 pack of XOP climbing sticks which stack together. I wear my saddle out, and strap those sticks to my pack. Its not cumbersome at all, you can walk through standing corn no problem, even crawl on your hands and knees through the thickest brush without getting tangled. When I find the tree I want to hunt, I set the bottom of the first step at knee height( in relation to standing on the ground). I have a small caribener on each side of my saddle and loops tied on my other 2 climbing sticks. I clip 1 stick on each side of my saddle. They don't hit or make any noise. I carry the straps for those in a small fanny pack which I remove from my pack and put on at the bottom of the tree. I get on my first step and then attach each step as I go up the tree. My bow is attached to a line that is tied into my saddle, and I wear my pack up the tree. My ring of steps (for a platform) is also in my fanny pack easily accessible. Once set i hang my pack, pull my bow up and im good
@@Djsweepaman nice. I do something similar but use a 3 step aider. Depending on the tree, from ground to hunt height, I’d say I’m 5-15 min depending on branches I have to go over etc. However, when it comes to camera gear etc, it adds a little more time to be fully set up.
Take a look at the JX3 saddle way comfortable, or the happy medium of an Arborist’s grade saddle like the Petzl Sequoia. The Saddle options are endless but I am just not crazy confident in the hunting quality saddles that aren’t having to meet any standards for falls (includes the JX3 for falls).
What climbing systems options did you guys cover ? Climbing sticks, climbing steps, aiders such as Knaider & Schwaiders etc, or arborist’s grade full on climbing ropes. I am going full on Climbing Ropes with the Petzl ZigZag and Chicane rope wrench for ultimate security.
Hi Michael, thanks for commenting. Earlier this year I actually switch to the Latitude Method 2 saddle. The two panel system makes for a very comfortable sit. In the future, I will be breaking down my entire system and will show a video. It took me a few years to dial it in the way I want it. However, I use 3 skeletor sticks from Tethrd with two step aiders on each. Chance are, I will probably move to the new latitude sticks this year.

I like the compactness of the Steps like the Wild Edge steps and the Primal Steps, smaller form factor and the Wild Edge steps come in a sort of holster carry bag. You can also create a ring of steps up top we’re you are hunting from.
I would love to see a video of the pros and cons of climbing methods.
@@michaelgeorgia7063 Yup. I created a ring of steps with my bullman steps which I used the first year of saddle hunting.
i think a sit drag is still more comfortable than any saddle ive used
I’m planning to switch over to a saddle for 22’ season. I would like to see more about how to climb? I’ve saw guys use sticks that strap on the tree, I just wonder if it wouldn’t be as easy to use gaffes?
Thanks for commenting. It’s taken me 3 years to settle in on a solid climbing set up. I will continue to use sticks and at time the one stick method. I’ve often thought about using spikes but didn’t get to far. I’m sure, if you’re comfortable with them, they would work great.
Gaffs expose trees to disease issues and parasite issues and insect issue. Wild Edge Steps and climbing Sticks do less damage to the tree. Arborist Grade climbing gear does even less damage to the tree and replaces the need for a tether with a much more secure option to be suspending from.
I’m getting ready to purchase a saddle from tethrd. I’m 6’6” and 260 pounds. What saddle will be my best option? I’m a big guy. I wear a size 38 in jeans. Any advice would be EXTREMELY helpful. I saw the eberhart saddle was on back order and our bow season starts in a week. I generally don’t hit the woods until the middle of October so I have time in my side
David gillispie that awesome man. Although I have the mantis, I would consider the phantom. I understand it’s a one size fits most. I would suggest you reach out to Tethrd via social media message and ask them. They are very responsive and helpful. Good luck 👍🏼
I have the phantom and it will fit a BIG guy and has a lot of upgrades from the mantis. I love my phantom and would highly recommend it.

Ron Macdougall I haven’t followed up with to see if he is using one or not. I sat in mine for 8 hours Monday, no issues. Very comfortable.

Ron Macdougall thanks for commenting and watching. Just so you know, I have a Tethrd mantis. I’ve heard really good things as far as comfort with the new phantom. Guess I should say just to be safe... I’m not sponsored by thethrd or anyone for that matter 😂. I’d suggest trying to connect with someone who has a saddle and lives close to ya. That way you can try before you buy. However, I didn’t do that, and haven’t hunted from a traditional stand or climber since.

How do you bend at the waist to take a steep shot?
The only difference than in a traditional stand is that I find myself doing more of a lean while bending at the waist which keeps tension on the tether for a rock solid foundation. It takes a little bit of practice but in most cases I found my form to be more stable when shooting from a saddle.

What was your total cost to get started with a saddle?
$675. That includes the climbing steps I used $110 and 2 Ropeman Ascenders (optional) $90.
@@thehuntingchallenge You can cut that expense by 1/2 or more by using climbing sticks w/the saddle set up. 😁 Makes you more mobile too!

You need to have at least one stick so he could really see what is like. He will never get in a tree like that
Maybe. Just wanted to give him a sense of what the saddle felt like. You’re right tho, the climbing aspect is just as important but it’s not worth it if you don’t like the feel of the saddle.

@@thehuntingchallenge It was fading in and out badly. Good video too, it was nice to see a new person trying this out for the first time. Im looking into saddle hunting this year. I used to climb (and cut) trees so used to hanging on a rope.
Too much work vs a regular self climber. Doing this in the dark and with heavy clothing on in winter is no fun.
I can see how some may feel that way. Having hunted in a climber for years, I think the benefits of the saddle out weigh those of a climber. Just my opinion. However, with anything, there are pros and cons.
Looks uncomfortable .
This is my 4th year using it and have had a number of all day sits with no problems. It’s not for everyone tho. 👍🏼
