  • Here is a review of my Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX hiking boots. These are award winning salomon hiking boots renowned for their stability and protection. The salomon quest hiking boots weigh in at 640 grams. They are not light but I think offer the best compromise of protection vs weight.
I think the salomon 4d 3 walking boots are super comfy, more comfy than my salomon mid boots.
These gore-tex boots are genuinely water proof. I've tried them many times since purchasing them. The gore-tex lining helps these salomon boots breathe too meaning your feet never get too hot and sweaty.
The salomon quest 4d 3 hiking boots are rugged. The build quality is excellent and despite all the scrambling, they show very little wear. They are super stable meaning the chances of injury are reduced, and believe me, I've really tested this out.
The new 2021 Salomon Quest 4D 4 GTX hiking boots have just been released. If you have the money I would strongly recommend buying them. If, like me, you like a bargain you can pick these up for as little as £100.
If you like this salomon quest 4d 3 review please give me a like. If you want to see more backpacking gear reviews check out my other videos. If you want to know when my latest videos are out please SUBSCRIBE.

Couldnt agree more with you on these Andy. I have these boots and I absolutely love them. Well worn in and they feel like slippers. If I'm honest I've never been bothered with weight. Let's face it a solid boot is going to offer just that little bit more protection. Top top boot. I'm looking at the 4s now as I saw the new ones are out and they certainly come with some big claims by Soloman on improvements. If you can get hold of a pair I'd love to see your review and thoughts on them? Cheers again Andy keep trekking.

Bought these boots in 2020. Black Friday deal for 120 €.
I've used these boots a lot in the last 4 years, as they were my only real hiking boots.
    I have both good and bad experiences with these boots. Mainly good ones, but unfortunately also a couple of hiccups, namely;
    - They are extremely heavy, and I get physically more exhausted when wearing these.
    - After 3 years, the toe-cap started to come loose from the top of the boot.
The weight of these boots, which can be considered a plus, is the biggest drawback I have to using these every single day.
I can actually notice the difference quite drastically, when wearing these compared to a pair of trainers. And I know it's comparing apples and oranges, but it's definitely something to keep in mind, if taking these for prolonged walks. Even just a trip to the forest.
The construction has recently started concerning me, since I noticed the toe-cap was starting to come loose, and after investigating this, I saw it was a common issue with not only this model, but Salomon shoes in general.
Now, for the good parts of this shoe, it's without a doubt the most stable boot I have ever walked in.
I feel almost impenetrable when I put these on. You can take them through any type of terrain, and they will always perform absolutely perfect.
The traction is immense, and I have walked up steep wet hills, full of leaves and small creeks, and never feared of slipping at all. You become one with the mountain.
The support around the ankle is also superb, and never once have I rolled my ankle, or even feared it might happen.
As for waterproof, I guess the proof is in the pudding.
I have, quite literally, stood right in the ocean with these, with water all the way up to the top of the boot. And not a single droplet entered the boot. Even after almost 4 years of usage.
Now I'm back again, looking for a pair to replace these ones, and with the knowledge I've gathered, I'm probably not gonna go for a pair like these in the future.
As good as these boots are, they simply do not fit my lifestyle, and general needs for a hiking shoe.
After every single walk, no matter how wet, dry, long, or short, I always end up with soaking wet feet, and in the winter there's quite literally steam coming off of my feet when I take these off.
As it turns out, I sweat a lot. Like, a lot. And these boots, with the GoreTex membrane, does not help me in this matter at all.
Compared with the exhaustion of wearing these, because of the weight, I will probably have to go with a smaller hiking shoe, or even trailrunner, instead.
But a lot of this has to do with my personal needs, and not with the faults of this boot in general.
I've enjoyed my time with these Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX, but it's finally time to move on.

These are awesome! The new versions are probably even better. The only fault is they are not great on wet rocks but apart from that I would give them 10/10 in every category.

I have had mine for about 4 yrs, been around the world with me, not used everyday but my go to boot for walking, last month I did wear them everyday while in Chicago so not "out in the wild" they were perfect! the only thing I find with these boots they are not good for standing still imo, but I guess they are built for walking lol,

I bought a pair of these and the leather near the toebox started to split open on my first hike. Salomon refused to warranty them saying it was from misuse. So keep that in mind when spending this kind of money on a pair of boots. Salomon considers walking with their boots on misuse.

4 of the 5 of us who go hiking have these. We absolutely hammer them and there’s only 1 of us who are now experiencing problems. His problems are cracks in the side of one boot after getting dry / wet / dry / wet etc etc but that’s after 3+ years. I think you got really unlucky as ours are excellent.

Hey Tom, Thanks for the comment.I'm considering Salomon Quest so it is good to know their customer service sucks. In return I will share my experience. I had similar problem with my Meindl boots some time ago but they were happy to replace them without asking questions. They also returned big chunk of money as this particular model went on sale the time I brought them back to the store.

I have a pair identicle to yours , they are not worn every day but still get about 20miles a week. Unfortunately after six months they are falling apart . I also wear Zamberlans and Han Wags so every boot gets time to dry naturally between thrashings . As you say , if you can find some for £100 grab them cos they are very comfortable - just don't expect them to cope with everyday high mileage . Bite the bullet , spend the extra 50-70quid and buy one-piece leather/Nubuck Zamberlans etc .

@@BackpackingUK Hi - no worries . My swift review didn't really get across how much I love these boots . They are supremely comfortable , very light (for me) , excellent grip and fit - I have slim feet - are 100% waterproof and rinse off to new looking , but , the toe protector is detaching from the suede top front and sides , on right boot the suede is inferior and has actually split and all highstress areas on sides of front are looking like the suede is weakening . I am gutted cos I love them but am thinking not to buy them again . I do always rinse off whilst still damp and dry in dark hallway etc . They are only used for rough milage walking not working* They are the first pair of anything I've ever spent less than 200 quid on in last decade - and will be hard to replace .

Hey Andy, I bought a pair the first generation of Quest 4D when they first came out. Back then I was more of an occasional hiker, but the Quests seemed like a massive improvement over any of the leather boots I'd had previously. That was it, I became an advocate of Salomon Quest boots, so when they eventually failed I bought version 2 of the 4D, which were actually a much tighter fitting, so once winter set in I bought another v2 pair of the 4D (to allow for thicker socks). These lasted a few years of casual hiking, and into the start of my more regular, and taxing hiking journeys.
Despite being well maintained (regularly cleaned and re-proofed), to the point they still looked fairly new, when they crapped out they really did crap out in style! "What happened?" I hear you ask. Well, they started leaking like a sieve, and even in damp grass my feet would get soaked. Worse than that, when they did get wet a black dye would leak into the boots (I've no idea where from) making my feet jet black, to the point I'd have to scrub my feet with a strong bleach solution.
But, despite the boots looking almost new, I'd had them a few years, so they were well out of warranty, and I had to bin them. I had a weekend hike/wild camp in the lakes coming up a few days after realising they were finished, and daren't risk a new, unfamiliar boot, that would take some breaking in. So I bought a pair of Quest 4D 3 (this was back in late July 2021).
Side by side, the version 3 felt a bit less well made than the v2, the materials felt a bit less sturdy and more plasticky. I believe the v3 are heavier than the v2 (I haven't double-checked that) but actually feel lighter on the foot, and they're certainly very comfortable straight out the box.
Again, I've looked after the new boots meticulously, I even have a soft bristled, nylon scrubbing brush in the boot of my car, so I can brush mud, dust etc off them ASAP. Yet they've started to leak a little already (after less than 4 months).
I can stand in a flowing stream and not a drop gets into them, but if walk through wet ground, they leak around the toe area. I suspect it's that the Gore-Tex membrane fails where the fabric flexes above the toes, and water gets squeezed through the Gore-Tex. Currently the leaks aren't so bad that my feet end up soaked, as long as I wear decent merino wool socks.
Reproofing sprays seem to make no difference btw.
Another issue is that when the fabric and leather gets saturated the boots can take 4-5 days to dry out, and that's in a warm, dry house (not a drafty, cold porch), with the boots stuffed with paper. And the rubber toe-box has started to very, very slightly peel away from the leather, too - I don't think it creates a leak path, or anything like that, but it ain't going to improve, is it?
I'm hoping this pair will survive the winter, but I suspect they'll properly fail well within 1 year of purchase.
When that happens the replacement pair will probably just get used for fair weather hikes, and I'll shell out a couple of hundred quid on some decent leather boots that will (hopefully) stand up to years of wet weather hiking.
In summary, I think they are generally a great pair of boots, but just not that durable. If you're happy to treat them as a disposable item, and replace them every few hundred miles, or you're an occasional, or fair weather hiker, then they could be a good choice. For me, if they were more durable then I would absolutely 100% recommend them - no doubt at all. But because of their durability/waterproofing issues I'm fast falling out of love with them.

4 out of the 5 of us wear these. They get absolutely battered but as long as you look after them they will last. I clean them down and use Nikwax products so they remain watertight and supple. I even wear these with standard socks sometimes. My only gripe is the grip on wet rocks isn’t great but that’s the only negative I can think of.
