  • A Napier Lion Aero Engine running at Brooklands Museum. This is the same sort of engine which is in the Napier Railton in the backround. It took three years to restore it to running order. Sorry about the start up but it made me jump.
The Napier Lion was used in the Schneider Trophy in the 1920's. It powered such planes the Supermarine Sea Lion 3, S.4 and S.5. The S.5 won the race in 1927, but afterwards the engine was at the end of its development. So a couple of them were fitted in race cars and land speed record cars.

Peter Morley put one of these into a Bentley chassis. What a beast., I saw it at Oulton Park a few times.
This was the engine that powered The Golden Arrow LSR car.

One day ,and I pray never it could lead to a accident, and someone gets hurt or killed. To run a engine without it being in a pull is dangerous. It needs something pulling on the crankshaft to stable the force

Where in the world did you find that bit of misinformation? If you want to worry about something, worry about that unscreened propeller arc being accessible to spectators, including small boys who might run up for a closer look at any moment.

Normal operation. At very low power settings, you cannot hurt an aero engine by leaning the mixture as long as oil pressure and temperature and coolant temp are normal. The standard shutdown for piston aero engines is to shut off the fuel, and then turn off the ignition after the engine stops.
