Just got a job at a family medicine clinic as a student helper (I’m a med student 🤓) - took my first blood sample and EKG today, both went really well, and I’m super proud of myself! Been taking time to play the piano and saxophone, which I love, and playing board games with my family 🥰 Lots do to, not enough time, but I love my life at the moment

You don't need to justify your tears! Medical School is hard, it pushes you beyond your limits. Heck, I cried throughout basic sciences, I cry after coming home from rotations after a hard day. I cry when my patients are in pain, I cry when their family is in pain. Emotions are what make us human, and if we lose that we are losing our humanity. Keep that with you, Rachel. Laugh your heart out, but cry when you need to. It's what makes you a more empathetic future doctor, and if anyone tells you otherwise just ignore it lol.

New medical students: Here are 8 tips for success👇
Stop comparing yourself to others. You got into medical school, that is an extraordinary achievement.
There is no way to learn everything.
    Seek out help when needed.
Be sure to block out time for yourself.
    Make friends.
    Be open-minded and be humble.
    Check in with yourself.

I just wanted to say that you crying and showing it online helps me to feel normal. I'm also in medical school and lately I've been crying every day because I'm studying 15 hours a day before my exam and still feel like I don't know anything. This year I cried more than I ever did in my lifetime. Sometimes I feel so hopeless because I study so much and still manage to fail. Please don't stop showing us your emotions. And also if some of you never been to medical school you have no right to judge if someone is going to be a good doctor. Guys it's so hard sometimes, you have no idea.
Please excuse my mistakes if there are any. I'm not a native speaker.

As someone who has lived through premed, med school and hospital internships with people who can't help but spout toxic positivity and insensitive remarks that are never called for or asked, especially those who are only looking at my life from the outside... I really would love it if anyone who doesn't think they experience anxiety to the point of tears would NOT judge people who's way of coping is to share/release their emotions in their personal time. Especially those who are not in the medical field or have no experience in spending hours upon hours in a day studying just to prepare for dealing with real events and people. Just once, I'd love those people to stop and think about what their about to say and really internalize what it would feel like if someone said the same thing to them in their lowest times. It's a valuable virtue to be honest but mindful of what you can and should tell people who have vastly different experiences from you. Be like Rachel and speak with respect and tact. Okay, rant over.

I’ve dealt with that as a nursing student. There is just so much information to remember and all of that can be so overwhelming. I used to hold in all my emotions but after watching your videos, I’ve let it all out and started crying and I feel so much better after I’ve cried! Also, let’s all keep in mind that crying is the most natural and instinctive way of letting emotions come out! When you cry you’re basically letting out what’s trapped inside and making you feel stressed/anxious/nervous - when we keep it in that’s when it gets hard to handle! Yes, in a professional environment (especially in the medical field) it’s not possible to cry on the spot when things come up, and yes momentarily storing things in is necessary but: eventually we have to feel these emotions! Whether it be by almost exploding in nervousness/anxiety, through coping mechanisms orrrrrrrr through letting it happen in our bodies (i.e crying!).
Crying is necessary and super important! If you can cry on the spot then definitely let it out! If not try and give yourself a moment after the fact when you can be by yourself or supported if it feels better and leeeeeet itttttttttt ouuuuttttt 💙
I love how open you are about mental health and sharing allllll facettes of med school. You’re absolutely awesome, motivating and have an incredible emotional intelligence! The Herd is only better because of that! 😄❤️

So, Kaylee, you are so brave for putting this out there, and by acknowledging this you're already headed in the right direction -- you should be so proud! And I know you're trying to get more fit, which is perfectly fine and great and you have no idea who I am, but if I could recommend you to do one thing I think it would be to put that same amount of energy into trying to love yourself just a little bit more everyday. Because loving yourself affects how much of yourself you can pour into others. And after all, people will remember you because of how you make them feel, not because of the way you look. Anywaysss, proud of you and good luck with everything!

I was studying for the mcat and although that will never compare to the stress of medical school, during my studying I can’t tell you how many times I cried out of frustration because it was just so much material. That doesn’t mean I didn’t pick myself up and move forward, it just means that I didn’t let myself shove those feelings aside and would rather face them even if they come out as tears. I ended up doing just fine on my MCAT so being emotional doesnt mean you’re less intelligent or less strong that anyone else. :) i really appreciate your transparency because school is hard and other people who are struggling too should not have to pretend like everything is perfect.

I applaud you for sharing with us, total strangers, your life; the good, the bad, and all the in between. Too many people on social media try to make us think that their life is “perfect” as if that’s reality. I support you as we are all human and have every right to feel what we feel.

You inspire me, and showing weakness, helps me to feel more "normal". The online/social media culture has cultivated a desire to only "show the best" but we forget that EVERYONE has bad days. That not everything is sunshine & daisies all the time... Thank you for being strong enough to show your tears, weakness, etc.

I love YOU Rachel! Those same people who said that you wouldn’t be able to control your emotions when interacting with your patients have NEVER interacted with patients. As a nursing/pre-med student, it’s so HARD to not let your emotions get in the way because you truly feel for the patient & you just want to be there for them. The patients ALWAYS comes first, even if your emotions & opinions are put aside for a moment. It’s extremely difficult, but it’s for the patient!

It's an important paradigm that people can be so responsible and caring as well as overburdened that they would still blame themselves for their burdens or how they feel because of them. I think it falls to everyone to manage each other and do no harm if not actively help. Tell them a joke. Give them a hug. Say or do something nice. Try to understand if possible and take away from the world that we know is so difficult by putting a little beauty back in it and remembering that we need each other. Anyone not getting what they need to keep going deserves better. We all deserve better and that's no ones fault. We are all responsible for each other. Do your best to help yourself and others live the best lives possible on this planet.

I totally agree! I started PT school online in mid July and I've had my fair share of frustrated breakdowns in my room because I'm so overwhelmed by the content. But how I act now is not how I'm going to act when I'm with my future patients, and like you said, our emotions will help us be even better health care providers by being able to empathize with patients and truly understand them as a person.

Rachel, whoever said that you showing yourself crying on a camera is wrong or is a sign on weakness, is totally wrong. You are being yourself and you are showing true emotions. It is not always a smooth sailing in your life and personally I like to see the true emotions in you. You don’t fake it till you make it!. I see how much you care about your study and you said yourself you want to be the best doctor you can be. I admire you. I am 36 years old. I’ve been watching your vlogs for many months now. I wanted to be a doctor but life happened and I chose to get married and relocate to another country. But I like to see what studying to become a doctor is like. You are a very smart and a beautiful young woman. If I ever see you cry again, I will cry with you, because I will understand how hard life can get sometimes. I root for you and I believe that you will become and amazing doctor. Do not change. All my love goes out to you.

Ok first off, I am a 1st year NP student and I love your videos! Second, I just need to stand on my soapbox for a little. I was once told, the day that you stop crying, have feeling, or being sad when a patient is suffering/dies is the day you need to leave nursing (medicine, etc). I have seen so many physicians and nurses just burn out and stop caring. Which, in the very end, hinders patient safety and outcomes. Yes, we are tough. Yes, no shit this is a stressful job, I will argue that what we go through makes us superhuman. Yet, we are human. Being human means you have emotions. Having emotions and being empathetic makes you a "better" physician. Remember, the day you stop getting sad, is the day you have to leave medicine. A provider that doesn't cry/get sad, is a provider that doesn't give a crap. Now that ultimately a lousy doctor. At the end of the day, you can cry...just don't cry harder than the family/love ones :D

I am a premed student and I cry pretty often... it is something I have struggled with and have felt “weaker” for in the past but ultimately crying is only a sign that you are human, and if my doctor cried in front of me I would feel a deeper sense of trust in them, not the other way around. You do you girl

lmao idk what kind of flack you’ve been getting about you displaying your emotions but as an M4 i can confidently and unashamedly say I probably cried once/week on average during my entire time at medical school. granted the average is severely skewed by third year which was just such an emotional hot mess. so anyway yea to all these peeps who be hatin.... uhhh med school isn’t hard it’s grueling. so yea sometimes ppl cry. or turn to less optimal coping mechanisms. the fact that the general public sees this as a weakness an inability to be a good physician is a great indicator that most people don’t know what the f*** goes on in medical education and all the crap that comes with it. i’m grateful and honored to be able to work towards my goals, but like training for a marathon just aint the same as like... eating ice cream... like it’s going to suck and push you to your limits and it better or else we’d never be prepared for the real world. idk if any of that was well articulated but girl i feel you and just keep showing and doing you bc there is clearly some kind of stereotype out there that needs to be dismantled

I fully understand how it is to be a medical student. Being a 1st year, about to take my finals for 2nd year promotion, I can tell how it is. I, myself, am not much of a "crier". I can't like, cry easily and even then, sometimes I do cry which is a big deal because it's an anomaly for me. But the stress is so high at times, and you feel inadequate at times because of the vastness of the course, that you breakdown.
