Regarding the insulin spikes during the day and the calorie deficit, I think that those may be irrelevant depending on your fitness and health level (gut, pre-existing inflammatory conditions). So if you have metabolic syndromes (diabetes, gut autoimmunity, etc.)
I would propose to avoid many BIG insulin spikes during the day. Maybe a couple of big meals and a few small snacks, mostly whole foods. Regarding artificial sweeteners, the jury is still out. Some studies claim that overconsumption of some (aspartame, acesulfame potassium, etc.) may cause carcinogenesis over the long haul. Relying on current studies is not ideal in these circumstances since that's exactly what happened with the tobacco and the processed food studies during the 1960s and 1980s respectively.
Lastly, one major issue regarding artificial sweeteners is the psychological trick they put you in. They predispose you to sweetness and thus it's much more likely to look for sugary foods afterward. Your tongue has receptors and overstimulation of those can cause issues. If you don't believe me that stop eating sweet chocolates (under 60% cacao) and eat only 85%+ dark bitter ones. After a couple of months, if you try to go back to what you were used to, you will feel disgusted by all the sweetness that overwhelms your tongue's receptors.
Having said all that, eating occasionally artificial sweetness won't really cause damage I think. My opinion is not to make something a habit before the science is on par with all the macro-results (10-20 years of cohort studies concluded).
Whatever the case it's good to talk about all that, so thanks Myron.
