Curling tongue back (or pointing just the tongue tip up) is correct. That is how most British and many American people pronounce it, and that version is called the retroflex r by language experts. Rachel belongs to a group of people who physically can make a humped 'r' (also called bunched or retracted), and which sounds very similarly to retroflex r. Curled tongue 'r' is not incorrect, in fact it is the most common form of English r. You need to adopt a form which feels most natural and comfortable to you.
+Vidra V the English /r/ is the same as the american r any time its pronunced, or is it not the case?..i mean what i know is that in american English the r is always pronounced while in British English there are some rules to leave it out but whenever its pronounced it sounds exactly the same as the american r..or does it have a different sound?..I mean for example both americans and the english say "real" the exact same way, right?
I have seen at least two methods of /R/ pronunciation.. One is the same as Rachel's and the other is exactly like the British version I have adopted... So confusing for me as a Chinese who has been learning British English in the past 7 years. LOLLL
May i ask u a question?is curling tongue back correct for dark L in American accent?
I think the position can vary a bit by person. But yes, there will always be a place down the center that isn't touching, so that would leave the sides or the top/sides to touch the roof of the mouth or inside of teeth.
Yes, a lot of people use the W substitute. This means the lips are in the correct position --- rounded --- but the tongue is not pulled back as it should be. Think of bringing the front part of the tongue up very close to the roof of the mouth, but make sure the tip isn't touching. Practice it much slower than in conversation to get the transition comfortable and accurate, then speed it back up.
She is the best English teacher I've ever seen!
Thanks!
I actually think it's more helpful to think about the point of contact: the middle part of the tongue. Yes, you don't want the tip to be touching anything, but I think focusing on what does touch will get you a cleaner, more focused sound.
:)
u r my best teacher ever..... i love u my great teacher..... u helped me a lot. thank u so much
There are two ways to make the R. One does have the tip of the tongue pointing up. I find when non-natives try to make it that way, the sound is less accurate and more hollow. That's why I teach it this way (also it's how I make it!). But it's certainly possible to get a good R consonant with the other position.
Incredible video! This, just in 10 minutes, has helped me pronounce R's better than I've done before my entire life.
I can't believed I figured this out myself with such an effort when I could have just watched your videos!!!
Thanks for all these awesome videos you teach me so much !
You're welcome
Dolls&Pawpsicle tt
This series is very helpful and is the best tutorial I've ever found. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Dear Rachel´s English ... good afternoon... it ´s 01:00pm here in Rio de Janeiro-Brazil. I just want to tell you that you are the best . Thank you for helping us. Best wishes.
Yeahhhhhh I understood it FINALLY!! Thanks a lot. It was years I was struggling with this sound. Thanks Rachel
Rachel, thanks for your lesson. I found it very helpful!
You nailed it! Now I have a guide on how to teach my student the "r" sound. You're a life saver.
Thanks to Rachel's for her comprehesive method of teaching english . I had a good idea fron her and her way to say and I jope that she will contenou with the same methid
rahmany alshugaa I will keep on! :)
@RastamanAbsol Some native speakers pronounce it that way too. I find my students have an accurate sound with this method more frequently then the other.
The tongue tip shouldn't be touching anything for the R sound.
Best, Rachel
This is the most frustrating sound. We need another fresh video for this sound. we unfortunately couldnt get the hold of it based on this video. Thank you Rachel for the good work.
I didn't know the right tongue position, until now! This is really helpful.Thank you so much.
very good video Rachel I am 22 and am an American, and am still having trouble with my r sound. 5 months ago I decided to go back to speech therapy for the first time since junior high and am improving quite a bit. I can say my beginning r's and r blends pretty well, but I seem to struggle with rl world and sometime r sounds at the end. I really hope to completely master the sound in the next few months. It is crazy to me how hard it is to master this sound.
Rachel, you are literally a genius!
For me it happens easily because the tongue is contracting, which makes it a little fatter.
This is a very difficult sound to explain and make!
you are the best teacher Rachel!! merry Christmas!!!
I have definitely had students say the same thing. It's not true. :) Yes, you can definitely get better by training. Holding out the R (I have a video on it) is a good approach. In January, I am releasing a lot of training materials on my website.
I would say, nothing! I think they are all the same sound, but some will be slightly different due to being stressed /ɝ/ as opposed to unstressed /ɚ/.
How I love the American 'R'! Thanks so much, Rachel!
Erlan Hernández :)
Retroflex /r/ is not wrong. It's just another way of producing it. It may sound hollow when produced by someone who normally bunches their /r/, just like a native retroflexer will sound silly when trying to bunch.
Even though I don't think I can copy you exactly, this video lesson helps me a lot. Thank you. It is a long-ago video but still helps people like me. I should say that "Thank you!!". I will practice with your lesson to be sounded like you. :)
You're welcome Jieun! Glad you liked it!
thank you teacher Rachel, this video helps me a lot!!!
I love your presentation skills, but a retroflexed /r/ is not an "incorrect" production. If you look at the research out there, you'll see that retroflexed (or cupped) /r/ is produced by just about the same number of people as the retracted (or humped) /r/ that you propose is "correct". Additionally, many American English speakers will actually alternate between the two versions of /r/ based on where they are in a word and what immediate precedes or follows them. If a tongue moves more naturally toward one way of production than the other (retracted rather than retroflex, OR vice versa) best practices say that a clinician should focus on the natural inclination of the tongue and work to strengthen that /r/, so that it can be correctly produced in all phonetic environments.
I do the curling back, and I've been speaking English since I was 3, so I here I thought I'm speaking some kind of "pidgin" English lol
Very nice! I love these videos. I've learnt a lot indeed, thank you Rachel!
Very nice, i'm trying to teach English to a friend and it helped me to explain. There is no better way to teach Pronunciation than explaining tongue positions. Sadly just a few teachers i see do it... That's why you see so many people saying "tanks" "3 = Tree"
What a great resource - thank you Rachel!
OMG I'm so tired of trying do the correct sound. HOW SHOULD I PULL BACK MY TOUNGE AND FATTEN IT IN THE MIDDLE?! It's impossible to do. I can only move my tip of the tounge or the whole tounge. I'm not able to grow it in the middle. HELP ME people, I'm hopeless
I feel the same way too. How on earth can I pull back my tougue and fatten it in the middle????? too hard!!
That's the big question, sir! :D
I think it depends on people's tongue length - I, for one, have a short tongue and therefore cannot do the apparently "correct" R sound.
I think we shouldn't try to make any perfect sound; It's impossible to sound 100% like a native speaker. What we should do is to imitate them and make real conversations to see whether they can understand us or not. :)
***** hey where are u from?
That's awesome!!
hi Rachel, thanks so much for guiding us foreign language learners how to properly speak English, your lessons have helped improve my English so much in just few days. However, i still struggle on this "dr" sound. The story is, i used to speak English perfectly as second language. Nevertheless, when i learned Russian as my third language, everything messed up. Now i am so badly affected by the run "R" in Russian (the "d" like sound) that i can not pronounce it properly like i used to.
This is truly one of the hardest sounds in AE. You never know how much to culr your tongue and where to place it exactly. You always end up sounding like some Chinese(mandarin), Irish or Indian. English R is much easier you, you don't have to curl the tongue and you can't miss the position.
Thank you, Rachel! I just realized I always pronounced the "hollow" R sound.
This video is SO excellent.
Thank you so much ma'am
I am trying to correct my "R" now since I have been doing it just like you said, curling the tongue up, which might sound okay, but it makes it difficult for people to pronounce words like paRTy, haRDer, muRDEr or even MURDeReR. I could never understand why I couldn't pronounce it, but pointing the tip of your tongue up is very close to the "flap T" which is used in these words and there isn't enough room to make a distinctive movement / sound. Thanks a lot for this lesson!
Cool, thanks for the quick answer. And when you make it the tip of your tongue is pointing down? I just can't get my tongue in this position. And btw your videos are great! Keep up the good work :) You're helping a lot of people.
I want to say BIG thanks for your great tips, Rachel!
I'm from Russia and here is completely different [ɹ] sound. It sounds like your first example "how not to make it". Now, i know how to do it right!
thank you very much Rachel!!! now i can make a fairly good r sound. I've making it wrong for 17 years
I can say the r at any position, except when it comes at the beginning of the word followed by u or o, Rule, Room, Roof, and especially if there is " the " before it, the rule, the room,, etc !
Nice thank you teacher from Kuwait
This English "r" is exactly the phoneme used in the 'caipira' (country) accent in some non metropolitan regions of São Paulo state. Since I am unaware of any English colonization in Brazil, I guess its just a coincidence. Just search for a video called "Rede TV Piracicaba - Sotaque". Thank you for the video.
I just can't get enough from this video!
it's really helpful!Thanks Rachel!
Awesome teache. I love hte way she explains
Hey, I'm german and i have to do a presantation in school about the presidential election.I had problems pronouncing the english R but now I watched your Video I have no more problems at all.
Hello thank you so much for your help
I always thought the "R" has to touch the top and disconnect immediately (Like the Russians do). Upon testing it, I realized that I now started to sound somewhat American in my own language.
Oh well, now to figure out how to say R correctly in my own language. The biggest mystery of all.
Thanks for the help, that was way more simple than I though.
Rachel, your name is hard to read but I love it.
Wonderful! Thanks rachel.
good looking teacher and great information.
thanks a lot!
@zhijie1115 Good ear! That will help you a lot as you study! Sometimes in front of a camera, people tend to enunciate a little more clearly than in every day conversation.
Rachel, I got a bad habit of pronouncing R by curling the tongue backward and is really hard to pronounce the correct way you do. Does your tongue touch your mouth roof or just touch your upper teeth?
+Omidwar21 Curling the tongue backward is correct English r (there are two forms of r in English - some people can do the curling type and other people do the retracted type). Your habit is correct and you don't need to change it.
I have the same ''problem''. For instance with words like mirror or horror. There's so many r's that the word just comes out sounding like ''mirrrr'' xD It's so frustrating
thank you
Excellent video, thank you!
(continue) Thank God, after watching your video, i was somewhat able to pronounce the "R" if it stands alone. However, i am still deeply confused with the "DR" sound as in "drain," "dry." I wonder if you can do a specific video about how to correctly pronounce the "DR" sound; it would help so much. Thank you for your great lessons.
Thank you for making these videos
My pleasure!
Thank you so much, Ms Rachel! ^^
Muito obrigado/Thank you so much!!!😃😃😃
You're welcome Lucas!
My r sound real good now. Thank you
Thanks for the video..
brilliant work!!!!!
I HAVE NO IDEA IM STILL CONFUSED....I don't know how...I'm so sad
Look, keep in mind that the clouds will lift and things will move faster. Personally I had fixed my pronunciation problem then I noticed it coming back due to anxiety after moving home or in stressful situations during recordings or in public areas. Its the most disheartening thing ever but giving in to being sad about it does no good when wanting to fix it your just playing a victim and the victim is usually stuck...
Hey Rach, I recommend you to use those animation to show how the tongue moves, because it's difficult to imagine.
thank you very much
I can pretty much hot every /r/ sound at ir er ur are coming out great as well as all begimong sounds. However my OR has a ton of w in it still and I clearly still sound British. This wouldn't be so troubling if I wasn't American. Like born and raised American.
I very like your video. But, I begin learning english with america accent, so, can you add english subtitle in video. Thank you!
thank you Rachel
Thanks soooo much .
Wish u the best .
Hi Rachel! Does the tongue somewhat follow the shape of a Pringles chip when making an R sound? Thanks!
+Ban Ban i have the same question, i speak Spanish and for me its very hard to pronounce the r
Thank you for your great videos. They're really helpful. I love them so much. Rachel, could you tell me how to pronounce "father's arms". I find it very difficult to pronounce the phrase including 2 R and 1 's. Thank you very much.
thanks a lot 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
For me it's American English. But I would bet in England it's British English.
HI Teacher nice vid Congrats...quick question you didn't talk abut the tip of the tongue..I was pronouncing it the wrong way. by curving the tip up and backwards
As someone fluent in English, If you think this is difficult, try learning the Mandarin Chinese pronunciation for "R". (hashtag subtle motivations)
Hi Rachel, Thanks so much for your video. I would like to ask you a question about some sounds related to the R sound. With the er sound (like in her, stir...) and also with ar (like in car) , does the SIDE of the touge tough the roof of the mouth?
Don't hate yourself. Not worth it, even for the letter R!!!
I can make the "okay r sound"(curling the tongue backwards) but when i try to speak r with the correct way it sounds like ahh.what do you think is the problem? i've been trying to speak r for months..
There are two ways to pronounce the r sound, so my question is: is it fine to pronounce the r sound by pointing your tongue to the alveolar ridge? Because that's easier for me to do than the other way around.
Thanks a lot Rachel :D
you are really great
Thank you so much
You're welcome
Does an overbite have any affect on this?
Hi! It shouldn't have too much of an affect - I think you should still be able to find a good American English R sound with an overbite!
R sound really frustates me a lot... I saw many videos but my problem was exactly the same you said ... i was doing 'd' sound .... Thnx alot ... You explained it much better ... I m trying 2 improve my pronunciation in english btw its good but i wnna make it better ... I do found out sm flaws in my pronunciations ... I m from india .. Thumbs up !!!!
Thank you!
God... This video explains it perfectly. Trying to get my Japanese friend to get it. Those tongue curled back R's are BS. you nailed it
Lately I've been describing ɹ by using the word "ear". I can pronounce this word using entirely the tongue alone without lip movements, with the mouth partially open so a student can see inside my mouth to watch tongue placement. Spanish speakers can easily pronounce a good ee sound, and it is a very small change in tongue shape to move to the ɹ sound. I also show students this website soundsofspeech.uiowa.edu/english/english.html It often eliminates the need to use a thousand word description of a tongue movement.
Nice idea!
Thank you :) this helped a lot although i found my self staring at your face most of the time, you are beautiful.
There are 3 different lips positions for the r (at 2:35). When linking an r at the end of one word to a vowel at the beginning of another word, which lips position to use?
The front part of the tongue comes down? So it's not supposed to be pointing up?
Hey Rachel. I would like to know to pronounce OUR in a sentence. Thank you
Hi! i speak english on a daily basis and ive never heard of anyone that my way of saying r is incorrect. my tip of the toung DO touches the top of my mouth. is that wrong? i mean, i i usually chill with americans and canadians and ive asked them to tell me whenever i say something incorrect and even when i ask about my r sound they say its as good as an americans.
thanks for answers:)
I can't pronounce the R without curling my tongue! Please help me!
+William Persichini It doesn't matter. Your accent is correct as the first comment said.
Thank you so much:)
