    New Construction, 1500 sf, Shelby Howland, Village Carpentry and Landscaping (Design/Builder); Tom Rossmassler & Jennifer Martin, Hempstone LLC (Hempcrete-Lime Plaster Supply, Consulting and Training)
    Nestled on 3 acres, this single family home aspires to become an affordable, deeply carbon-beneficial prototype for Village Carpentry and Landscaping, a local construction company. This new home engages a vibrant palette of natural building materials - local hardwood timbers and cherry sills, site-sourced hardwood flooring and pine interior finish, and hempcrete featuring local lime, cellulose, and wood fiberboard. Together, these materials capture and store more than 12 tons of carbon dioxide in this new healthy home!
    Shelby was looking for natural building materials that could help transition his company away from conventional/toxic building materials. When he heard about hempcrete, he was intrigued, and after learning more, he decided to build a hempcrete house for himself as a showcase for Village Carpentry and Landscaping. This Energy House has Hempcrete walls with lime plaster interior and exterior finish. Superior Walls was used for foundation.

    I very much appreciated that they shared cost per square foot ($235, but to three-figure precision?) But did that include the design cost that he avoided because an architect was unwilling to create the design? Design is a significant factor in the total cost. That said, I am very glad for their courage to build this structure that the rest of us can learn from it. Thank you.

    I would think hempcrete and associated vapor permeable exterior finish materials would benefit from much larger roof overhangs to protect against moisture damage in the longer term. Also talking about heating the whole place with just one wood stove and then a picture of the mini-split unit on the wall almost at the same time seems a bit disingenuous. I am a born critic. Hopefully that applies to myself sometimes also. Really cool build. Congratulations.

    I’m wondering why the stove was installed rather than a rocket stove and mass heating system? The rocket stove would be far less expensive to operate than the wood stove.

      Most likely, you would to find a conventional plan that you like and then hire an experienced (or at least studied and interested) architect to alter it to compensate for hempcrete construction, or do so yourself.
      Just keep in mind two very important things:
      1. Hempcrete is not a load-bearing material. Hence, why it is usually packed or blown in around a conventional timber frame.
      2. Hempcrete is vapor-open and requires only vapor-permeable finishes (e.g., lime render instead of gypsum drywall, mineral paints and washes instead of conventional paint, etc.).
