Sohyang has said in an interview that this 2014 performance before Michael Bolton was the most pleasing to her personally up to that point in her career because Michael Bolton is one of her absolutely favourite singers, and because he was so effusive in his praise for her she was satisfied that she and her team could produce similarly world class songs and performances. And hey, Michael Bolton told her she was a vocal "virtuoso" after the concert and invited her to join him for the rest of his South Korean tour. How do you beat that? Well, Michael Bolton can offer to take you on an entirely new world tour making you the featured guest--and that is _exactly_ what he did!
Unfortunately, or not, the two could not make their schedules match no matter how hard they tried and the tour never materialized. This was actually fairly depressing for Sohyang because she really wanted to go BIG TIME in the music business at that exact moment but everything seemed to conspire against her. Pneumonia problems would crop up and this has been a chronic problem for Sohyang. She would later recognize this as God's way of preventing her from getting caught up in the North American and European music industry that would have been destructive to her character at that time. Sohyang is humble enough and courageous enough to confess she had become so ambitious that she was an ugly person, short tempered with other people and not treating them with proper respect. I know, my jaw hit the floor when I read the interview too! Sohyang a _mean person?_ Say it ain't so! But we all have times where we are embarrassed at how we behaved and Sohyang is just a human being, like the rest of us.
Two years later in 2016 Sohyang was almost ready to quit the entire music business because her health problems were so bad. Yet she had given her truly immortal performances of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Arirang Alone," "Everyone" and "I Have Nothing" only the previous year in 2015, and "The Prayer" and "Power Of Love" in 2014--songs _any_ diva who has ever walked the earth would _kill_ to have in their repertoire! So she plundered her bank account and took a trip to New York and Philadelphia. In the latter city Sohyang saw a quote from President Franklin Roosevelt where he had said in his inaugural address during the Great Depression of the 1930s that "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." This proved so inspirational for her that when she got back to South Korea she entered the "King of the Masked Singers" contest in 2017 and won it on six consecutive occasions! Still the pneumonia dogged her so badly she knew it was God's way of telling her she had to reassess why she had become a singer in the first place. And that was to sing to lift people's spirits who were going through hard times.
In 2018 David Foster himself did eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club and it is thought he offered to be the producer for new recordings of her. But she had been really reconsidering her purpose in life and decided the Hollywood lifestyle was the last thing she truly wanted, and in 2020 she turned down a contract offer from Sony Music US, _the 2nd largest music corporation in the world!_ And there were many others before that going back a decade or so! Since then Sohyang has been resolute in her decision to stay away from the music "industry" and manage her own career for the purposes she had started it all with. I for one can't express how happy I am she has chosen the path she did because she is one of the most inspirational people I have ever come across in my entire life, and I know countless others feel exactly the same way. 👌😉💖💖💖

What a wonderful breakdown! I much enjoyed the details you went over. Michael Bolton (who once made this song a hit after Bill Withers did) was the one standing in the end. It was a show dedicated to his songs so he was there and 'judging'. He called her performance virtuoso and invited her to concert with him. So Hyang is my favorite. I think it is partly because of all the different techniques she has mastered, and also how she delivers her performances. Vocal master and monster.
SoHyang is an ultimate performer! There are many female singers with good tone and singing skills, but it is rare to find a singer with as many dazzling weapons as Sohyang for live performances. 😘 Love your reaction Jennifer!

It doesn't get any better than this! My favorite vocalist reacted to by my favorite young lady reactoress. ( See Jen, I too can make up my own words! ) This was from a Michael Bolton special in S. Korea. Six popular S. Korean singers were invited to a competition and each was required to cover a Michael Bolton song. SoHyang won hamds down. The man you saw react first is Jay Park. Lena Park and Ailee also competed. On another note, thanks to yoy Jen I now know the difference between an onset, an offset and an elephant. Thank you!

I really didn't like this version at all-just too much manipulation! It felt like showing off every ability all in one song. Wayyyy over done-destroyed the beauty of the song. But I liked your analysis.
Don't judge and jump to conclusion. It's its own concept of the show(competition) where singers are allocated the songs of a legendary singer (in that episode, it was on Michael Bolton) and are requested to sing one their own ways. Full manipulation is allowed within the show by its rules in the first place.
