  • Hopefully this tool will work better for punching hammer eyes than that silly round punch I was using. . .

Nice job! I was lucky enough to have been in one of Alec’s last tool making classes. It was an awesome experience and I learned a ton. One trick he taught me to correct an off center hole, which I kept punching, was to cool down the side you don’t want to move with water. That way only the red hot metal moves and it’s easier to realign a punched hole. We also used would dip the tip of the punch into a mixture of graphite and bees wax to prevent the punch from getting stuck in thick stock.

That must have been an awesome experience!
Yes, the water trick works well. I have learned a lot since I made this video, but it's always good to get reminders. :)

Just a few things. For forging the tip of the punch, you first make it round, and then flatten it out to make it into a capsule shape. The tip of the punch is key. If the geometry isn't correct, then you might as well not bother making it. The tip is at a right angle, and the bevel is sharpened at a right angle. any shallower that that and you wont actually punch a plug. Here is a video that may help explain what I'm trying to say-ruclips.net/video/nCETra-GCMU/видео.html you may have to copy and past that into the search bar. Also (and this isn't important) but Brian Brazeal is the one who actually came up with it. After re reading this, I realized what I wrote almost sounds rude. I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to help.

Well, I may have to do some adjustments with the grinder, but I'll keep that in mind for next time. Thanks.
