  • My daughter and I did this for her school science experiment. If you want to try this, remember you cannot see this effect with the naked eye. You can only see it through the lens of a camera. We first tried it with a high-end video camera at 24 fps, but the effect wasn't very dramatic (not sure why). We tried it with an iPhone 4 and it worked much better.
    For this experiment you'll need:
    - A powered speaker: We're using a JBL EON subwoofer turned all the way up. Keep in mind that 22 hz is a very low frequency (you can't actually hear it) so that's why we used a subwoofer.
    - Tone generating software. We used the the full version (.99 cents) of the iPhone app here: itunes.apple.c... The full version allows you to type in the exact frequency you want.
    - Rubber hose, 3/4" diameter: at first we tried the garden hose, but it seemed too heavy, so we switched to the lighter rubber hose.
Tape the hose directly to the speaker. The speaker vibrates the hose and creates the effect. We tried a trickle of water but it didn't work very well. We had better luck with medium-pressure on the water.
Experiment with different cameras. We tried my wife's iPhone 5 and for some reason it didn't have the same effect as the iPhone 4.

Hi I have been working on this experiment but it's not exactly coming out right. I am using an app on my iPhone which can set the camera to 24fps. The speaker is quite loud but when I play my 24 hz frequency it isn't working. Any suggestions ?

+Alisha Sagar Are you using a subwoofer? A regular speaker will likely not be able to reproduce 24hz frequencies. That's an extremely low frequency that's barely audible to the human ear. Also, what kind of water hose are you using? It needs to be very lightweight. When we first used a garden hose it was too heavy for the speaker to move it at a rapid enough rate. We went to Home Depot and picked up some lightweight rubber tubing and that made the difference.

+Barry Nicholson yes I am using a subwoofer and at the highest volume the frequency can be heard quite well :)
The pipe I am using is similar to yours although it maybe be a bit thicker. Do you think it's the app I am using? It's called movie pro and it lets you choose different frame rates. Thanks :D

+Alisha Sagar I tried using our high-end camera which could film at different frame rates, and could never get it to work. It wasn't until we filmed it just using a regular iPhone that it worked, which we kind of discovered by accident. Have you tried it just using your phone with it's regular settings?

+Barry Nicholson I haven't tried it yet because on the internet it said iPhone 6 video recording is at 30 fps. But I will definitely try today and see :D thanks so much
