What JIMI HENDRIX and THE ALLMANS thought about LYNYRD SKYNYRD

- Berry Oakley called me and told me to come up to Byron Georgia to sit in and play harmonica with The ABB at the Atlanta Pop Festival. Thom Doucette was the other harmonica player at this festival and got the credits, but there were two for the ABB. This is a short back stage conversation between Jimi Hendrix and Gregg Allman about Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was July 4, 1970 and Skynyrd was still a band in Northeast Florida but Jimi already knew their sound. This is the music grapevine at work and this tells how he knew.
I don’t believe anyone has ever said that Jimi Hendrix had ever talk bad about any musician. He was a very humble guy all the way to his death.
According to Carmine Appice Hendrix wasn't very positive about Led Zepplin called them 'excess baggage!'!! Goole it!!
Google it!!
@@bowrog And? Jimi's opinion about them doesn't change where they stand as legends. Everyone wants to bag on them for "stealing" old blues music. That goes on everywhere in music. They were iconic and if you or anyone else doesn't like them so be it... I don't care for the Beatles or the Stones. That doesn't mean they aren't great Perhaps my view is different as a musician in that if you are filling arena's on a nightly basis whether you are the bay city rollers, Hendrix or whomever you are by that simple reality a star and you've made it. What more do you think a musician really wants?
What an artist wants is irrelevant to this discussion as are your musical tastes . On this thread a comment was made 'Never... did I hear of Jimi speaking a disparaging word about musicians'--I was replying to that!!!
@@bowrog He also asked his manager Chas Chandler " When I go to London, will I meet Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page ? "
Skynyrd, Allman brothers, Hendrix and early 70s! Now those were the best of times!!! RIP
They weren't the best of times for many people, but music from the 70's was certainly the best.
to conclude, Duane was a music freak & one fine guitarist, Skynyrd was one hellofa southern band & Jimi Hendrix was a fckn force of nature. IMO.
Force of nature indeed!
No need at all to add "IMO" at the end of your sentence, Brother. It's not an opinion. Testify.
Hendrix made a lot sound with just a drummer and a bass player... I think he was the best I ever heard.. skynerd my favorite band of all time ... just great lyrics and music..
Rush is the best 3 piece ever by far.
@@drewjohnson4794 Thanks for the laugh.
I don't think I've ever heard or read an interview where Jimi badmouthed any of his fellow musicians. Love and miss you, Jimi.
on the contrary he had nothing but kind things to say. very generous with his comments.
I read he hated Neil Young's electric guitar playing and also no fun of Blue Cheer.
xmandlt Good point...and true. Jimi never spoke poorly about anybody(Monkees, etc) even though he could have. He concentrated on speaking about others' good points, or not at all.
Jimi, like Duanne, was extremely intelligent and a true gentleman; they both lived and breathed the music.
And LS was/is a great rock band, not THE greatest, but a great band.
He once said the guitarist for Chicago was greater than himself.
Ned Modelo I wouldn't doubt it...but I DO doubt Jimi foresaw Chicago selling out and doing no more Rock the rest of their career(nothing but Pop & love songs)!!!
What few people realize - and I don't think even the Brothers themselves knew it at the time - is that the Allmans were much more of a jazz band than anything else. The drummers did not play like typical rock drummers, and their use of odd time signatures went way outside the typical blues / rock boundaries. Truly one of the most unique and brilliant bands in history.
True. Folks also don’t know that Duane was a jazz fan, and brought both a pre-release copy of Layla and Coltrane’s My Favorite Things to a radio interview in NYC. He also said of Miles Davis (in the same interview I believe), “That cat takes you places you never been before.” And In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was inspired by a song on Kind of Blue - All Blues. So they really were a proto jazz-rock band, as evidenced by their entire solo-driven approach to their performances.
bug Wes Montgomery fan also
@@pgroove163 Think you mean BIG Wes Montgomery fan! Took me a bit to figger it out!
Love your story,s but your time line,s are way off. Last time you said in 69 Ted nugget and the Amboy Duke, s went on before Skynard and Ted said watch this he was going to blow them off the stage he went and played cat scratch fever he cane off stage and said now beat that skynard went out and play give me three steps and blew him off the stage . Not sure when give me three steps was written but cat scratch wasn't written until 76
It wasn't Jazz, they just learning still that early. Fanboys call their screwups jazz music lol.
I like Skynyrd, but the Allmans are the best damn band in the land. The Fillmore East album inspired me to learn bass, guitar, and keyboards. They're my main influence and God rest their souls.
We are gonna have to agree to disagree lmaooooo
The Allman Brothers were just a jam band all their songs sound the same
I love them both. Equally, with all of my heart! No comparison. Just grateful for both.
You can do that, too.
Comparing these two bands is like comparing Beatles to Beach Boys - two totally different styles. But the Allan's never had / never will have any equal.
Maybe. But rvz was the coolest mf there ever was
The ORIGINAL LYNYRD SKYNYRD can never be duplicated, no matter how close the family is. I emotionally and lovingly listen to ORIGINAL LYNYRD SKYNYRD now and forever. Best band ever; incredible young geniuses of Southern music. I’m 53, and was 10 in ‘76 when LS was very very busy. I miss them so much, never met them, but this was a very Special Band. Ronny Van Zant, musical genius !!
1:33 I was expecting him to say, "there's only one way I'm going to the concession stand to get a hotdog"
3 of the greatest bands/musicians of all time. And all seem like good people. Stay healthy, stay safe fellow music lovers!
My Dad went to the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970 - I just found a random photo on the internet of the Pop Festival and my DAD is in the picture! so random - he had great seats pretty close to the stage, and he was only about 17 to 18 years old. He had told me years ago how he ran away for a week so he could go to it, because his parents would not allow it. He saw Jimi and the Allman Brothers so I always was trying to talk to him about it. Then couple weeks ago I say to myself - I wonder if I look through a bunch of Atlanta Pop Festival pictures on the internet, could I possibly spot him in one of the pics. Well the very first picture that I picked out to look at, because it was a real clear picture with alot of people in it. I said dang there he is right there, so I sent to my brother and asked if he could find Dad in the picture, and he spotted him instantly as well, and we both recognized his hands( of all things ) . So Cool
That is cool!
I went to August Jam biggest one day event in NC history 250 k plus. Told friends I'd meet them at OD tent. I never saw them. I'm on Facebook at a site about the A J looking at picture. There are my friends 30 ft. from when i was right on front row at 3 A M. Did your dad see picture?
WOW Skynyrd, Hendrix, & the Allman's. Now THAT'S some great talents & some great music!!!
Biff Roberts
you think
Now..we have BTS, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran. 🙁
Jimi was known to be very humble. Met him when I was 15.
How did it go? I’m probably the biggest Jimi fanatic. I’m 15 now so, I didn’t get the chance to meet him while he was alive :(
Me too!
What an incredible memory for you. I've watched footage of him being interviewed. He was humble, insightful, and respectful of everyone..and a good sense of humor, too. Dick Cavat asked him " How's does it feel to be acclaimed the greatest guitar player in the world ? " His response was something like " Well, I know I'm the greatest guitar player sitting in this chair. " A real visionary.
"Met" - is that what they called it back then?? ;)
@@suazot ..? Huh
I enjoy any story relating to Duane Allman. Thank you SO MUCH!!!! God bless.
I was at that festival in '70. ABB was the reason I went. Hendrix was flawless. The purple acid was too. We started driving back to Dallas, TX and pulled over to sleep. A cop woke us up in Louisiana and told us to move on. We didn't remember leaving Byron, or the trip to LA. Whew boy.
great stuff brother. I could sit and listen to these stories of better times gone by all night long. God bless ya Steve
+smokie harris Thanks Smokie for one of the best compliments I have had. I was just at the right place at the right time and this is just like sitting around a campfire with all my friends telling stories.
+Steve Vest's Swamp Chat Most definitely better times.
+Steve Vest's Swamp Chat I hear ya on the better times. what I wouldn't give to go back and relieve some of the times I've had as well. I often feel this homesick empty feeling and I have no doubt its not just the longing for those days. you without a doubt had some great great times and one of the important things is that it may have been years ago but you can relieve them everyday in heart memory and thoses that have went on spirit. take care brother and look forward to many more stories from ya
Steve Vest's Swamp Chat I love it
Great story brother. No offense, but get all these stories out before we are all gone. You old timers aren't going to be around forever to get all the stories out. I had the priviledge of owning Greg Almans Les Paul. Back in the 80's I had a Les Paul my uncle gave me. He was in a band playing bass that opened up for Billy Joel in the 70's. When he got out of music, he decided to give me the guitar. My music teacher liked the guitar, and like an ass I sold it to him. I was a fucked up wiseass kid and didn't think before I did stuff. I also had a nice epiphone les paul that was hot rodded, so I didn't need another guitar, but needed the money. My music teacher got the word out he was selling the 59' Les Paul. Back then around 82-83, a 59' Les wasn't worth what it is today. My music teacher sold it to the great Greg Alman for $5000. My teacher said Greg was coming over in about an hour, so I went to his house. I got to play Melissa in his basement with the one and only Greg Alman, just 2 guitars. I wish I recorded it because that was one of the coolest moments of my life.
Jimi Hendrix was such a gift.
I'd like to hear some of Allman's "Stash" tapes.
clarkewi somebody's got to kiss his daughters ass A LOT and bust out a HUGE $$$$$$$ the gal is pissed and not playing around... waiting and hoping. BTW she's not the "bad guy" music business people tried to screw her over and she took her game home...don't blame her ,I'd sit n listen to em all till things got right.Hope that's soon and that I can afford it😰😱😂
@@rustybird4955 why doesn't she just hire a lawyer and hammer out a deal ?
because she doesn't have to ...
Check the Layla Sessions with Clapton and Duane Allman cutting it up and playing a bunch if extended jams. It doesnt get better than guitar battles between Skydog on the slide and Slowhand bending those strings.
My bet is that Dickie has some of them. He's pretty sharp. Just a guess.
I remember the days of reel to reel being the best quality music you could get.
In my opinion still is
if that stash exists, i'd love to listen to every reel
SWAMP CHAT - GREAT TO HERE STORIES OF OUR HERO'S ! THANKS MAN ! 🖒
Thank you, Steve! That is really interesting. I love to hear about what these guys think about each other. Jimi also really admired Billy Gibbons and said so on his interview with Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show.
Skynyrd was a great band before the plane went down. Ronnie Van Zant wrote amazing song lyrics and the band instinctively knew what to do with them.
It was truly magic when they were together but without everyone it just couldnt work. These men's legacies will forever be connected and they brought out the best in each other. Like brothers. But Ronnie had the life experience to express his experiences into words and the band knew how to make you feel those experiences. Listening to skynyrd for me is like talking to an old friend. And i miss that genuineness about them. Straight up honest, from the heart, soul, blues music at it very finest and nothing has ever compsred to it.
Small...but a great piece of music history. It sure would be nice if the tapes Duane recorded would surface.
+Tom McDonald True.
prdwilson shut the hell up idiot. were you there??
prdwilson I think Steve Vest is a sweet man with a good heart and was blessed to have walked along side Ronnie and Duane and call them both friends. He was in the right place at the right time when some of the best music in the world was being made by the best rock and roll musicians the south has ever offered. My hometown heroes. I think you need to shut the hell up again and quit doing what losers do and have some class. Have a good day
Duane's daughter has most of his in released music...the music business pissed her off,an she not giving up shit! Really hope something changes n we get to hear a slice.....like the studio cuts from Eric Clamptons Layla sessions good God what some guitar playing!!!!!
rusty bird the Duane box set produced by her has lots of music. It is in a box shaped like a Gibson Les Paul guitar.
Thank you for sharing this story. Someone needs to find and master those reel to reels. Pure gold.
Warms the heart to hear Jimi knew about the boyz thru Duane and dug their sound ❤
Sir, thank you so much for your time. I love your stories!❤🙏❤
I'm not surprised that Jimi and the Allmans thought highly of Lynyrd Skynyrd. When I first heard each of these artists for the first time I knew I was hearing greatness without need of hearing endorsements from others. To me, their music spoke from the heart and soul--and you can't fake that.
I sure would love to here those tapes Duane has. Bet those would be EPIC!!!
That's the gold right there
Jimi Hendrix was once asked, "How does it feel to be the greatest guitar player that has ever lived?" Jimi Hendrix responded, "I wouldn't know, ask Terry Kath"! BOOM! That is all there is to know! Jimi & Chicago toured together & Jimi was blown away by Terry Kath....I still am, another great loss for guitar players.
Terry Kath was just not human! I could see any guitarist watch him and be intimidated by him to their core! One of my favorite shows of Terry and the Boys was in 1970 in Tanglewood. You can find it here on RUclips!
Dead wrong.. The actual quote is Jimi saying, i dont know, ask Rory Gallagher! When asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world. Terry Kath was his favorite though
bro ive seen this “quote” used for about 10 different guitarists
@@gorliagirp7274 , nope, actual quote was for Rory
Well per the documentary on Chicago I believe it was called something to the effect of "now more than ever" Jimi was at a Chicago show and was talking to one of the guys and told him that Terry Kath was a better guitarst than he was.
As far as jimi being asked hows it feel being the best........there's several guitarists he would mention when asked that question. I heard rory, Johnny winter, etc. I've never seen an interview with jimi though where he said anything like that. But as far as terry kath that's the story per the band in the doc.
This. Is. INCREDIBLE. Why didn't this video turn up sooner in my feed?? Better late than never, youtube. Thank you so much for sharing this anecdote, sir!
I was there. I was part of the Hendrix thing. He had a band he produced called Cat Mother. I roadies for them. It was a gas...

Just tuning in.. Love the stories Steve.. Imma little younger at 52, but Skynyrd has always been my favorite southern rock band.. Turned many of friends on to their music early on.. Good times....
Around 76/77 Lynyrd Skynyrd sold out in St Louis, I crashed the concert at Kiel Auditorium by paying off a long haired doorman to let me in, ended up walking right up to the stage while the band was playing give me back my bullets, glad I was crazy(and still am) lol
wont be long and we will all be singing "gimme back my bullets" lololol. great song
Hey Steve, love ur stories. just happened across u this am. i saw Skynyrd at Willie's 4th of july picnic in Tulsa before the crash. what a time, camped out in the bar ditch in front of Raceway.
Steve thanks for sharing I have ronnie van zant's tattoo on my left arm, and lynyrd skynyrd is the greatest band of all time and my favorite! I wish ronnie was still here he was way before my time but i wish I could ever met him!

I love you fellas. I can't completely believe that LS was the best and most original RNR band, but most certainly one of the tops. Keep rocking and being a fan of you and the ABB I'm sure you are sad of the loss of Mr. Trucks recently. What a dynamic drummer and great man. Keep living the music guys. We'll keep listening.
Keep up the cool work brother. My heart pangs when I think about what happened in the swamp but it's got alpha and omega all over it like a signature so I know it was meant to be. RIP to the baddest lineup that's ever been in the history of Rock and Roll. Good stuff never lasts.
These are Great Stories! Form Thee old "daze" Steve! Thanks for sharing them for us! Looking forward to more stories from Off the Road on The Swamp Chat! 👍
Neat. Although I always say that the Allman Brothers are the best and most original rock and roll band EVER. Their "Live at the Filmore East" album proves it.
Check out the recent release (last few years) of their complete Fillmore East recordings from March ‘71 which were the source tapes for the album. The first night, first show performance of You Don’t Love Me is the greatest live performance I have ever heard. It’s on RUclips.
Thank you for sharing the story. I Love Jimi and LS, Jimi had a good ear. My cousin got to meet the AB and Duane asked her out on a dinner date. She said he was very handsome and sweet soft spoken. I also read in my Badfinger book Pete Ham singer of Badfinger played guitar with Duane when Badfinger toured Macon GA and met up at a local radio sation. Pete really liked him. Do you remember Duane or Gregg talking about Badfinger. I also read Gregg got up and jammed on stage with them at their Atlanta show at Alex coollys ballroom in 74.
Good Story as Pete Ham was also a great singer and song writer.
I was a Badfinger fan growing up. You have a fantastic RUclips handle.
I’m here for anything Allman Brothers. Skynyrd great. Allman is one of one.
Thank You Steve, great talk. I have been an ABB fan ever since my cousin, Red Dog, their roadie. I'm reading Gregg's bio now and your info on this is great and helpful. My cousin wrote his own book, and I'd recommend it as well. Then there is Duane's daughter, who wrote a good book. I enjoy the ABB even more when I know the history. Enjoyed your playing, too.
Always enjoy hearing first-hand from other Brothers about that fascinating time. I was there. Heard Jimi play The Star Spangled Banner at midnight on the 4th - with all the fireworks!
I was also at the First Atlanta Pop Festival in Griffin at the raceway the year before. This was the Second Atlanta Pop Festival he is talking about here. He is correct but it was the second, not the first.
It was great to be a Brother then - and now. I've been thinking about that a lot lately. Thanks for sharing Brother. Toured the Big House and it was great. Going back soon!
Thanks again Brother, just wanted to clarify, not correct you.
LS...true bond, true brothers - the best of the best.
Steve - just... Thanks for sharing. Even if you don't get the book the way you want it...this kind of input from you helps to round everything out. Connects dots that I did not know were there if you get what I mean. Again, thanks and all the best.
Thanks, that was my intention from the beginning to connect the dots. I see myself as a missing link with pieces of history that have not been shared. I wanted to start telling the stories and as I have, I am finding more that needs to be added to the book. I am not in any hurry to finish it. I have been working on it for a long time.
Dude, you are an overflowing fountain of information. Love ya man
Jimi was a gentleman and never talked down about any other musicians and always tried to encourage others. Jimi ruled from 67 until his death in 70 and a few short years later Skynyrd would take the title of the greatest rock band. What a great bit of rock history that he actually had heard Skynyrd before he died. Cheers P[>
WOW, Awesome, , what a treasure of knowledge of the music experience, thanks for sharing.
Man, are Duane's tapes preserved anywhere? That sounds like a treasure trove of fine music.
1) The Experience had broken up just before Woodstock a year earlier. 2) By the summer of 1970, Lynyrd Skynyrd weren't even signed to a major label yet, had only just a handful of recorded demos out, and were still a year away from making their first proper recordings in Muscle Shoals. So how would Jimi have known of them, and why would any promoter take a chance on putting an unsigned band on stage at a major rock festival?
Lynyrd Skynrd my fav southern rock band and that's difficult to say cause gees these guys were all so damn great Almann Bros. Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Outlaws, .38 Special all of them also from Fla. Florida did put out most of the great southern rock bands. Then you got other greats From TX. ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker from So. Carolina.
I'd say that's the most original American music of our time.
Toy Caldwell was a great guitarist.

Steve- thank you so much for these history lessons. There have been so many great bands w/ so much great music, but in no way could I give much argument to your statement about LS being the greatest R&R band ever. To each his own huh but what a perfect storm scenario that took place when that group of boys got it on.... The hardest part for me is waiting thru the 2-3 weeks of "withdraws", before you feed us more!!!! Thanx again🎸🎸
+Mike Lathery That means so much to me, Mike. I am hoping to get more closer together. Got some great ones ahead. Next one is more of what Duane had to say about them to me when I was in Atlanta and sitting in at Piedmont Park with them.
+Steve Vest's Swamp Chat Oh yes more please. I have been a big fan of Skynryd my whole life, but even bigger fan of Duane Skydog Allman. I am waiting patiently for the next one. :-)
Three of my favorite groups.
Steve I love listening to these great stories you share with us.
True story he telling, I was there too and those were his exact words and Gregg's exact response. Fact .
The truth is, all of these musicians had not thing in common. Good music. Probably not a stretch to say that if you played good music you could recognize good music. The respect for someone else's talent shows how good they were as musicians. It wasn't about how well THEY could play. It was about the music...period. That appreciation translated to their music as craftsmen of the trade. Truly great story. Thank you sir!
That is supposed to say "one thing" damn auto correct
I lived about 15 mins from Byron, Georgia. My dad did a bunch of work in the Big House in Macon. Love the Allman Brothers

Stories like these makes me like the internet
Well worth the four minutes here. Don’t forget Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniel’s, Grinderswitch, etc.
Cool story. R.I.P. Jimi Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Greatest fucking generation of all time. They were the gods of our modern music. There is no way to repay our debt of gratitude
Jimi and Duane were both music addicts. They both knew that Ronnie was directing something completely new under the sun. As Al Kooper stated, they were a heavy band with a country singer. Ronnie was the Mark Twain of rock, and I think his writing was so far out and intelligent that it gripped any real musician.
Thanks so much, Steve. Great memories, that we all need to hear.
Sweet Home is on the list of greatest opening licks in R.R history. Dylan, Beach Boys, Beatles, we are talking "Non Plus".
I absolutely love the segue way of them going to get a hot dog and he going "there ain't no other way Jimi could've known about Lynyrd Skynyrd other than through you". What kind of story telling is that!?
Authentic lol
It's a bit scattered. But that's how memory works sometimes, for things long in the past. This guy associates talking to Duane with him praising Lynyrd Skynyrd and describing tape recording them with the same occasion they walked over to get a hot dog. A bit weird but not unbelievable. In a way it adds authenticity, IMO. I didn't believe the story at first since LS's 1st album didn't come out until 1973 - 3 years after Jimi's passing. So the only way Jimi would've heard and liked LS is by either seeing them play in a local bar (unlikely unless Jimi visited the Jacksonville area, which is kind of out of the way) or by tape recording. So, I believe the guy. I have no reason not to.
God Bless you Greetings from Greece
I think I commented on an earlier video relaying the same story (my memory could be faulty) that this could not be true, but I was wrong about how long LS has been a band and I can tell from your passion for the music that you are entirely sincere. I am enjoying watching your videos.
You right on Steve..God Bless
Love the history behind the scenes, thanks for the upload!!
Ronnie absolutely loved the Atlanta rhythm section. he thought they were the best southern rock band.
+My Videos Ronnie had stated many a time. that Ronnie Hammond was the greatest singer he ever heard. maybe steve can tell us some Atlanta rhythm section stories.
+bisp25 I ran across Mylon LeFevre and Keith Evans in Atlanta in 1970, both great musicians who worked with ARS. In the late 1990s, Keith Evans was on tour with the Kentucky Headhunters and I sat in playing harps with them in Orange Park, FL at a concert. I talked to him last year. Mylon Lefevre did a show with Mountain and Bloodrock where I sat in with Bloodrock playing harps. It was at the Coliseum in Atlanta on Halloween 1970. DOA was Bloodrock's hit song. They mixed up gospel and rock back then. It wasn't that unusual to find a gospel band playing with a rock band in a concert back then.
they were great.
I loved ARS & saw them in Central Park. I have 2 daughters Melissa & Jessica.
Doraville is one of those songs that you can listen to all day long & it will sound better every time. Shame Skynyrd never wrote a song called Jacksonville.
Great story. The guitar players for lynyrd Skynyrd were incredible imo.
LONG LIVE LYNYRD SKYNYRD, I SAW THEM AT FUNOCHIO'S BAR THE WEEKEND THAT AL KOOPER WAS THERE AND DISCOVERED THEM AND WANTED TO SIGN THEM ON HIS RECORD LABEL SOUNDS OF THE SOUTH, I GOT TO MEET SKYNYRD, THAT NIGHT , THEY MADE SUCH A IMPRESSION ON MY LIFE THAT NIGHT, I NEVER HEARD MUSIC PLAYED IN SUCH A GREAT WAY, I LIVED IN JONESBORO GEORGIA AT THE TIME, THE FIRST ALBUM CAME OUT AND I LOOKED AT THE ALBUM COVER AND WENT DOWNTOWN JONESBORO AND TOOK A PICTURE OF ME STANDING IN THE SAME PLACE THAT THE PIC WAS TAKEN, I HAVE HAD THAT PIC ON MY WALL SINCE 1973, COUSIN FIGEL
Cousin Figel awesome
I also saw them at Funnochios in Atlanta...they were wild. Ronnie threw an empty Jack Daniels bottle out over the audience. It hit the exit door, and luckily the bouncer retrieved it. Man, we loved those Guys, and the Allman Bros. so much. Their songs are rough and rowdy, filled with sultry, swampy music and liquor- fueled lyrics about loneliness and lost loves. Gets you deep down in your
soul. Long live Southern Rock ❣
I saw Skynyrd play at our local Junior College cafeteria. They were the backup band for Strawberry Alarm Clock.
Saw the Allman Bros later at the same college in the gymnasium just after Idlewild?.
Both these bands paid their dues.
That brings back memories are used to live in Jonesboro Georgia unfortunately I was born in 1968 I was too young for that but I went to Jonesboro junior high, Jonesboro senior high then I moved to Philadelphia when I turn 17. Where did you take the picture at downtown Jonesboro by the old courthouse by the railroad tracks?Cousin Figel
what a cool story, so great to hear tell this thanks man!!
1970 is pretty early for Lynyrd Skynyrd to be known on a national level by someone like Hendrix. Wikipedia says they just started using that name in that year; their first album was a full three years later. If you say Jimi brought them up in conversation, that's fine with me, but it is a little surprising. Hendrix must have been pretty knowledgeable about obscure (at the time) Southern boogie rock, must have had his ears open while he was touring. They were a real good rock and roll band, no denying that. To this day, when I'm doing barbecue and beer, there might be some Skynyrd playing a little too loud.
Whew! Glad Jimi thought highly of them -- love Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Just happened on this guy, don't know who he is, or if what he says is true.
But being a huge fan of this era and these artists mentioned, I've read a lot about Jimi and ABB, Duane in particular because his death came about two years before I discovered the Allman bros and I decided that I needed to know more about him.
Can't say I've read much about Skynard, didn't really get into them until much later.
But from what I read about Duane, this is totally believable. He was the ultimate conisuer on what was going on in the business and always wanted to hear whatever he could.
So it's totally believable he carried around a reel to reel so he wouldn't miss anything.
What a personality he must have been.
And with Jimi, it sounds like him too.
He was too polite from what I gather to ever say anything negative about something he didn't like, so according to one if his gal pals, he wouldn't say much of anything then.
But if he liked what he heard, he wouldn't stop talking about it and would tell anyone who'd listen.
He also would study it and take it on himself.
Some people call that stealing, I think it's just great instincts.
Lynyrd Skynyrd back in the 1970? Sounds like a science fiction. We all miss you Jimi...
Thinking the same I thought they were the 1% at that time?
Didn't realize Duane was a fan of Jimi Hendrix. But, on the other hand, he did record Little Wing on the Derek and the Dominos record. For me, Duane will always stand out as a great musician and accomplished so much in his 24 years.
Im sure Jimi and Duane were big fans of each other as they were 2 best guitarist ever to walk the face of the planet
Duane said Jimi came to him in a dream and played him the cords for little Martha
charles kaplan don't forget ...Jimi said Billy Gibons was the best he ever heard.....now picture Billy ,Jimi,EricClapton and Duane as a guitar band all playing together...kind like the Layla outtakes....ooooh man!
I was lucky enough to of seen all three play in concert. Hendrix at Devonshire downs in LA Lynard in Seattle before the plane wreck and the Allman Bros
In LA . I'm 66 yrs old and had alot of great times as a teen and early 20 s on the west coast seeing so many early bands including these rockers. Concerts were cheap and the music was great. Lol America
Fantastic firsthand stuff, thank's again Steve!
I could listen to your stories all night long steve.
Thanks for sharing this bit of interesting history.
Great Story Steve thanks for the sharing of it
Great story! Thank you. 👏
thank you, man. God bless ya.
Assuming this is all true then " Someone " in the Allman family needs to bring these tapes forth .
Man, thanks for sharing Steve, it's through cats like you that we get a little window to the past! Thanks again man, just really cool vid Bruv, Cheers and here's to good Rock-N-Roll!
IMO I take Allmans over Skynyrd, ABB would stretch out into jazz territory frequently, Jai on the drums could lay down some jazz beats and the improvisational trips they took were just awesome. The Allmans also delved straight into country (though not the cry in your beer at the bar stool style) at times, I really appreciate bands that don't get too caught up in one idiom, guess the whole "southern rock" label really just tried to capture the rock, blues, jazz, country combo that these guys represented. Skynyrd, no doubt are rock and roll legends and certainly were impressive too (now living in south Alabama, I think there's a state law against ever interrupting the extended guitar solo in Free Bird, and of course the state song and license plate motto is Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama")! Hendrix loved the blues and turned it into his own flavor, know he thought the world of some Billy Gibbons too!
I have been playing with Artimus off and on for a long time. But I don’t like when a band is labeled as the best at anything. It’s to broad of a statement. Every musician I know has an idol and we emulate them till we start to find are own style,so you can’t make a statement like that because of where they came from. We all come from music that was played before us. But I will say that they were just as ground braking as their influences. Much peace and love I didn’t mean to offend anybody. ✌️❤️👍
Damn, watching this makes me feel like we have regressed so much as a society since then.
Makes me grateful I was alive back then, so I know how much better things could be if we all worked _with_ each other more.
Actually, the societal degradation we're currently mired in, BEGAN with the hard left turn we took in the 60's. As much as i love much of the music of the era, the 60's were the biggest trainwreck this country's even seen. To name just two elements, the recreational drug craze, and the sexual revolution, both came about then, and we've been paying the price ever since, with no end in sight.
@@markrodgers2976 Yeah, it's way worse now.
