This is a very important language. Without it's survival, Egyptian hieroglyphics may never have been translated. Jean-François Champollion was smart enough to realize the similarities between the two.
Yeah, its amazing how some words have remained the same (or at least very similar) to middle Egyptian, for example ran (name) has remained.
Actually the Muslim occupiers were the first to realise the link.
The Sufi Dhul-Nun al-Misri who lived in the late 9th century wrote an Arabic-Coptic treatise. He even speculated that the ancient hieroglyphics on the many crumbling ruins throughout Egypt were also a variant of Coptic, but he had no evidence to prove his hypothesis.
It would take almost 8 centuries before Napoleon arrived on the scene - and the Rosetta stone was discovered and translated by Champollion.

@Karim Mabrouk Wow, look at what I started years ago. Regardless, it was very interesting what Champollion realized. Hieroglyphics were a phonetic alphabet, not a symbolic one. I.e., it used characters that corresponded to sounds. Just like the Latin alphabet most of us use today. Previously, it was thought they were symbolic, and that each character represented a concept. Sort of like how Chinese basically made a character for every word. Until Champollion, it was thought that their meaning was lost to time.
And unfortunately Coptic churches in the west have removed it from the Holy Liturgy and the you g generation are growing up extremely westernised and see no value in preserving the language in western countries. Also for some reason people in leadership believe somehow transforming the church to appear more modern and progressive that it'll attract people..

It's complicated.
Several different blood lines were added but typically this was the ruling class and a lot less mixing happened than one might think.
It's hard to define "original" bloodlines since there is evidence of kinglets from before the archaic period indicating that Egyptan culture developed in a similar fashion to greece with more or less isolated city states speaking similar dialects and worshipping the same pantheon.
The difference is that Egypt's history has gone through quite a few phases.
It should also be noted that Makourye and Nobatia just south of upper (southern) Egypt had developed parallel civilizations with Extremely similar albeit slightly distinct linguistic and religious rites.
These kingdoms at certain intervals invaded and ruled Egypt. installing several dynasties like the kushites famous among them would be Taharqa and in turn were invaded and ruled by egypt. Likewise from Asia the hyksos tribes set up the 13th or 14th dynasty if I remember correctly in lower(north egypt) and spent The majority if their time wiping out the rival Egyptian 15 16 and 17th dynasties to the south.
you can tell by they're pharoahs distinctly Semitic names. That they won that one for a time. Until finally Intef and his line up to king Ahmose kicked them out again.
All of this is even before the Assyrian invasion, the Persian dynasties, the Macedonian, ptolemy era, the roman era, and so on. The point is it's a long story.
Much has changed culturally.
As far as we can tell, by blood, little has changed but at the same time we don't have a large enough sample group of bodies from 3000+ years ago to test and see.
Hieroglyphic is a type of writing and not a language .

@@lrimunlmorin7947 if you knew history you would know under Chalcedonian rule the copts suffered unbearable persecutions with their noses and ears cut off and the taking of their churches. The Islamic invasion was a break from chalcedonian persecutions up until the 7th century. The muslims made the copts pay gizia which was more of a mercy compared to what the chalcedonians did but later on the persecution got worse and thats where we are now.

Most of them couldn't even read, let alone have a strong opinion on christology.
Note that the emperor and defacto patriarch of the Byzantine empire at the time of Alexandria's betrayal was himself, *from* *Alexandria*
The only people who were "persecuted" were primarily graeco-roman church leaders living in alexandria who attempted to use christology in order to undermine their new leadership. They were just jealous of their former equal, Heraclius and sought his downfall.
Just like they once did with Hypatia, they contrived a bullshit religious outrage.
Only this time Haracleus was much more powerful and popular than a mere scientist (he defeated the persians and restored byzantine borders) and so they couldn't get people stirred up enough to murder him.
Thus they had no problem selling their iliterate Egyptian subjects to the Arabs because they thought that they could convert the arabs to their cause.
They were wrong.
Anyway...
Pretending that they had the best interests of Egyptians in mind, or even that they gave a shit about persecutions which they themselves instigated mercilessly against pagan egyptians is silly and hopelessly naive.
The copts sold egyptian blood for the same reasons the copts bought egyptian blood, it was politically expedient to do so at the time.
Egypt was always just a commodity to them, a place with many poor and ignorant people that could easily be swayed from one theology to another so long as it came with bread and self pity.
Now 1400 years later, those same ignorant poor people are singing the praises of their slave-god and the swindlers that led them to worship it even as those *exact teachings* are causing their gradual extinction.

I'm considered an Augnostos deacon in the Copitic Orthodox Church although I haven't been formally ordained yet, my knowledge and teaching is approved by the priests, deacons and sub-deacons.
The issue is in the Coptic use of nature vs. substance. Christ's nature is one, seeing that there is only One Christ, just like our St.Cyril and our teacher Discourus taught using the analogy of wine and water and the heat that radiates from a sword in the furnace.

When the greek came to Egypt the greek language mixed with Ancient Egyptian language to update to be Coptic language until the Arab came and we start to speak only Arabic and use coptic only in the church praying.
Coptic developed from Heratic Egyptian, Heratic also is the mother of ProtoSinaitic which is the root of Phoinician, Greek, Aramaic, Syriac, Hebrew and Arabic

I'm not Coptic, and I know nothing of the faith, religion, language, or people, but this song brings tears to my eyes. What the hell does that mean?
The tune itself was originally used to welcome a Pharaoh or later on a King or ruler into a city or town, later the church adopted the tune and put in lyrics more fitting to Christianity, it is now said in the Coptic church to welcome a pope, bishop or on occasions such as Easter and Christmas and other feasts of the church.

This is what is called Miaphysitism. We are Miaphysites, neither monophysites, nor diophysites. It's been a label that we as Copts along with the rest of the Oriental churches have been labeled with since the Council of Chalcedon, and hopefully one day, with the amount of openness in the media and the readily available means of communication, we may be able to clarify as part of the Oriental churches that we are diaphysites, to those who still see us as Monophysites.
M Barsoum monophysitisism makes more sense though.

The vast majority of Copts remained Oriental Orthodox. Those who became Chalcedonian were few and were primarily Greeks who had some particular connection to the Empire.

@YemeniteChanter We chant the hymns in coptic, but many parts of the liturgy and other services are done in the native tongue. For example, in Egypt they pray in coptic and arabic, in canada we pray in english, coptic and arabic.

Coptic church is one of the oldest churchs in the world. It was established by St Mark the Apostle in the 1st Century. The Copts kept the same traditions, teachings,books and even hymns until this very day. They did not adopt any other religions in their church or any old religions such as Isis or Horus and Defiantly does not have any relationship with Buddhist teachings or Hindus. All their sources come from The Holy Bible

i know the daughter of an coptic priest. her family is one of the rare who kept the coptic tradition.
they speak it fluently. because i think there will be never again such a oppurtunity i just started to learn reading coptic and a little vocabulary from her :)
Anyone who has heard the recitation of the Quran will immediately find comfort in the tone and melody of this hymn. I wonder whether the reason Egyptian Quran reciters are different in the Maqamat they recite in due to the indirect influence of hymns such as these. I also think this is the closest thing we’ll get to Ancient Egyptian singing
@naeel6150 There was a schism in 451 over the Council of Chalcedon. Some Copts accepted the Council and joined the Orthodox churches, while others did not and remained with the Oriental Orthodox group of churches, in my view a more ancient tradition. God seems to like having different churches, because one church by itself can't see the whole truth. We need different perspectives, but we all love the same Lord Jesus Christ.
Understood. I attended a festival at a Greek orthodox church one time, I asked one fellow about it, & he acted like I had asked him a very sensitive question !!
I guess one could say that I came from a standard Protestant Christian background then became somewhat liberal after studying a number of different belief systems, including Evolutionary Creationism & Intelligent Design.
