Boi i've mained lucario since bralw, all the way to PM, even crusade and now smash 4, oh and in pokken Sure, back then was only because i liked pokemon and he was ma #1, when i got into the competitive scene,i sticked with him cause aura shennanigans, insane punished from reads and rageing shiek mains. Oh boy, that's a lot of midroll ads. I nearly clicked out of the video before it could start playing them, but saw the comments praising it and decided to stick around. I'm glad I did, but I just hope not too many others didn't give this video a chance, because this is probably the best Lucario guide out there and is definitely worth watching.
Very nice video! Probably the most well-researched Lucario guide I've seen so far, and I actually learned a fair bit. Here's some things I don't believe you mentioned: -While Fair has very low cool down, it also has fairly high landing-lag (18 frames). Nair is much better for landing (9 frames). -Dair is also troublesome when landing. If you dair on your opponent's shield, the air-stall it gives Lucario will make it easier for his opponent to react and punish. -Lucario's jump-squat is 5 frames, and his dair comes out frame 4. This makes dair Lucario's second-fastest Out-of-shield option at frame 9, behind grab (frame 6). -Nair is Lucario's best A-landing aerial, as it autocancels from frames 1 to 7, and only has 9 frames landing lag if you miss. -Nair is a better combo-finisher than Fair in situations where they both hit (which is reasonably often at low percents). Nair has a base damage of 8, while Fair has a base damage of 6. Uair is better than both, though. -Nair and uncharged Aura sphere (at non-high aura) are Lucario's only jab-locking moves. -The footstool-jablock combo you showed works only on a select few characters, mostly due to many getting hit by the dair =( -DThrow is RARELY useful if you can condition your opponent to DI behind Lucario (since that puts them closest to directly above him after the throw) because it has much lower knockback-growth than Up-throw. Still, almost never makes a kill-combo =/ -UThrow will hit/tumble Luma as well as Rosalina if they are close together. You can't really pummel, but you can at least knock-away Luma pretty easily. -Force Palm's (Side special's) range is very deceptive. At high aura, the graphic looks much larger than the hitbox really is. Test this in training mode to understand exactly where the tip is. -Aura Sphere Charge can be directly cancelled into a roll by tilting the analogue stick to either side (similar to Cloud's Limit Charge). You can buffer this on landing if you make the input close to landing, making it a rather poor alternative to A-landing. This is especially useful when using b-reverse Aura Sphere as a landing mix-up. -Lucario's dashing skid animation (when you suddenly flick the opposite direction while dashing) is one of the faster one's in the game, giving another approach mix-up -Pivot grab has pretty great range, and slides a bit if you are fully running when you land it. Doesn't come into play often, but it's there. -Lucario has one of the worst Air Decelerations/Frictions in the game, making it very hard to mix up your aerial motion without b-reverse, which requires pretty heavy commitment since aura sphere can only be cancelled by air dodge. -When fighting against characters whose recoveries have a hitbox on the ledge (e.g. Marth, Metaknight, Ike, etc.) you can still do the Aura Sphere trap by jumping first, starting the charge in the air (b-reversing if necessary), and landing into position. This can also be used to avoid ledge attacks. All I can think of for now. Again, thanks for the great video!
The footstool combo actually works on a huge amount of the cast, if you delay and move away from the characters head, you can shift the dair away from them and still get the as jab lock. It's pretty tricky though.
+Hayds 126 is there even a point in trying to pick up a new character anymore. Smash 5 is right around the corner and we don't know what kind of changes to the mechanics we will see. Some characters might be completely changed or even removed from the roster.
Tip I’ve found. It’s inconsistent, but if you hard turn on the first of the three extremespeed landings, to the point you’re pointing the control stick in the other direction, you’ll still slide, but might be facing the opposite direction. It’s saved me sometimes, as the ending lag feels shorter.
Guide for Luca mains Step 1: spam short hop cancel dair Step 2: Run after your opponent with SHCDA (I call this Pursuing. It also works with Lucas bair if you fast fall right after you perform it) Step 3: You're on your own now, there is no step 3.
I'm a Lucario main and I never knew that you could directly influence which direction his Counter came from, nor did I know that you could also choose which way to launch your opponent with Extreme Speed. I'd seen that you could change the direction he faced as you landed, but had no idea what, if anything, it did... until now, thank you for this video.
Down throw to forward air is pretty consistent against a good amount of the cast imo. Easier to use than a reactionary up air. Also throwing off stage close to the ledge is really helpful to charge aura sphere or put them in a terrible DI position since the knockback is so small.
Thank my boi, I'm getting ready for Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Wanted to pick up Lucario once I unlock him. Last time I played Smash Bros was back on the Game Cube
I always love how visually appealing your videos are, makes it a lot more interesting to watch than some other guides! And I don't know if you consider requests, but if you do, Art of Luigi would be great
Astro is my favorite lucario player and possibly my favorite smasher. Something about him is strangely attractive. I want to meet him someday and get his autograph. But i'm starting to think that maybe dreams don't always come true, at least not without actively making those dreams come true. One day i'll work up the courage to hike up to canada and find out which igloo Astro lives in, but until then i'll just have to sit here dreaming until i can meet this glorious lucario main.
I kinda wish you did all of them this way-- it's nice to have a skit or two every now and again but this format of giving the info is vastly more clean, professional, and enjoyable than some of the others.
I can't believe there were still things I've not yet discovered about Lucario. I main him and thought I knew all the tricks but it seems I've still got more too learn. This was an awesome vid, and I've learned more off this character now thanks too it
I'm a little late to the party here, but I've been a Lucario main pretty much since Smash 4 came out (didn't play Melee or Brawl). I did it because I saw him as being bad and kind of a meme character (I play the green/purple one, with my name being Dank). I've only ever done decent with him, though I'm not great at the game anyways, and all my friends are really good. But now I can see and understand what he's actually supposed to do, and how he's supposed to play, so I might have to do a few 99 stocks against my roommate (really good player) and see if I can get some of the concepts down. Hopefully he plays mostly the same in Ultimate, so anything I learn can be applied directly to it.
Art of Pit please because nobody ever talks about this character and I have almost no idea how to use him optimally. Also the ability to select knockback direction with ESpeed is super cool.
Thank you for the awesome Lucario guide. I did not know about the hitbox direction of Extreme Speed, nor about the Aura Respawn. This definitely taught me a lot about Lucario that I didn't know. Keep up the excellent work.
The most surprising thing in this video for me had to be the fact that you can change the direction your oppent is sent when hitting them with extreme speed. My jaw legitimately dropped
Lucario has been the character I play best with since Brawl's release. The only things that I didn't know about that you showed in this video were the Fair into Bair combo, the off and on vulnerability of his recovery, and that his SideB can be started just before landing and still grab. Awesome video. Very detailed and well-done. I've been hoping for awhile that you'd make this, but I didn't expect it anytime soon. Thanks a ton. (:
Bro, you're just amazing. Incredible video. Lucario is definitely my favorite character in Smash4 and soon my best character. I mean, i didn't even know that i could control counter's direction! You won a new suscriptor. ;)
Perfect timing with the release of Sun/Moon and more people finishing them recently (me included), there's always something about playing through a new Pokemon game that makes me fiddle with its characters in Smash.
I dont even play smash 4 i play melee and still i watch every art of video he puts up because they are so damn enjoyable . Keep up the good work man ^^
Yesss, been waiting for this. For his D-Throw, I sometimes use it as a mix-up for Up-throws if I think my opponent will air-dodge from u-throw combo conditioning. Can lead to an up-smash read at mid-high percentages.
There are two extra things I would like to add here. First, you can cancel Lucario's airdodge lag by using neutral air 4 frames or less before landing. Second, down throw gives you an excellent read on your opponent's DI patterns. If they DI in, they generally play more aggressively, but if they DI away, they usually prefer defensive options
A character that's always interested me but I was unable to figure out, explained in an extremely detailed fashion with Insaneintherain's covers playing the entire time? Man, how could I not love this?
paralyzer hit, grab , up air, win. down smash. down b. win. spam Nair. win. there is literally nothing new to Zss. everything about her has been discovered. izaw should spend his time on less developed characters. least that's my suggestion.
Incredibly well done. Just because I'm super critical and Lucario is my main, I'd like to help out with a couple combos. Dair puts the opponent into a jab lock situation with Nair, although as you've shown, you can use Aura Sphere. The difference is you can Dair > Jablock Nair > Dtilt > Grab This also stops working at mid % and also aura dependant (obviously) Aside from getting both hits of Nair on Uthrow, at slightly higher % than 0 on characters like Falcon, you can get Uthrow > Nair into reading what your opponent will do. Out of Nair, the opponent can choose an aggressive option or jump. You can get Uthrow > Nair > Dair > jablock Nair (if they tech, you can get a grab or dash attack) if they choose to do nothing Uthrow > Nair > fade away Aura Sphere if they choose an aggressive option And Uthrow > Nair > follow jump Nair or Fair > AS if you can. Although these are less practical, it's the one I'm best at using lol. Not many people know you can escape Uthrow > Nair very easily.
Yes! Thank God! I have been waiting for an Art of Smash video on Lucario since Brawl, but I just never had the time to ask about it. But now, here it is! Thank you so much. - Mr. Tailson
He's been my main since Brawl...Izaw, you've tought me some combo's I didn't even think were possible!I wanna give you a big thank you for making this, I'm definitely gonna learn more from it, xD
Great video and guide! Both are really well done and gave me a really good head start on Lucario since I haven't played since Brawl. I think I'll definitely be a bit more prepared for Ultimate now. :P
Smash 4 was a good game, but never made me feel like I was really playing lucario with his mechanics until ultimately came out. The first time I played him I have realized that lucario is hard character to master and get his moves right, but once you do, he can be a very powerful opponent and be very effective. His mechanics in ultimate are much better than when he first came out. In looks, power, and game play, because he is and amazing foe to face or play as. Although he may not be the best character out there, he can prove to be an amazing opponent if used correctly and used skillful. I am not criticizing your video, as I though this was a good introduction to his moves and his kill sets, but I am saying that the lucario we have is not the same than the one in smash 4. This is still useful for moves in ultimate, but we need to figure out better ways for attacks with him in smash. As a lucario main in ultimate, I say that this video isn’t completely out of date for other newer lucario mains, but you need to see other videos in order to understand his even newer and better combos/ mechanics that have improved from smash 4.
What the HECK your like a MEGA PRO!!! with lucario how do you get that MUCH COMBOS!!!!??? and he’s my FAV!!! Pokémon and I can’t even move my controller that fast!!!!! 😍😍😍 love lucario
I love these so much this gets a like before I even watch the video. lol Even though I don't play as Lucario. My boy with the rhyming name should get a Art of video next.
I would also like to note that the damage of Force Palm's flame falls off with range. Point blank (11.875 base) does more than at the tip (7.56) according to KuroganeHammer and SSBWiki. It should also be noted that a player can mash to escape from the Force Palm grab version, but still receives 6% base damage as opposed to the 13% from the throw.
I began using this character some time back because I never saw him used online. I've begun to see him used more recently, and effectively too, as time passed since I began to train with him specifically. Everything mentioned in this video is accurate information, especially his vulnerability, and so I took time to adjust to his techniques. Unfortunately, I'm not a very good player, so I never mastered the ability to form and enter into combos, but I'll try to apply the advice given here. Currently I'm trying to learn more about Pikachu, which is a real struggle! And the struggle is one of the main reasons I started with Lucario: I enjoy training & learning with unpopular characters, to see what makes then unplayable. But it's so much fun! It's a good game, after all.
izaw I love these "Art of" series, you put so much noticeable effort in these to ensure the titles look perfect as well as the dramatic frames. if you're considering ideas. Id love to see Pit.
Izaw, you make some of the best guide videos ever. The things you demonstrate and say in these videos have helped a lot to use being better players. Speaking for myself here, I have gotten better at characters like Roy because of these videos and lots of practice. Just as a reccomendation, I would like to see Art of Toon Link or Art of Palutena.
A simple Table of Contents for you guys, just in case you need to revisit a certain portion of the video! Also, thanks Izaw, for the great guide on such a difficult character!

Welcome all Frostbite 2017 viewers who TOTALLY mained Lucario since forever
Failboat This comment deserves hundreds of likes but people just don't want to admit how right you are.
I'm confused, was Lucario buffed? Just started playing him.

PianoAuride not reading the whole thing
PianoAuride I'm not a Lucario user, but i would like to thank you for your sharing 🌸
PianoAuride how long did this take you?
Jaden Lopez Maybe an hour to write and remember it all, but at least a year to learn it myself =p
The footstool combo actually works on a huge amount of the cast, if you delay and move away from the characters head, you can shift the dair away from them and still get the as jab lock. It's pretty tricky though.
I just picked up Lucario the other day, your timing couldn't be better.
setk lmao same, picked him up a month ago
setk Omg, me too, its like a christmas gift
Been using him since snash 4 came out. Too bad that I suck at the game in general though.😅
I’ve been trying to pick him up more too. Since my usual main Kirby is a low tier I wanted a high tier main as well. He is also my favourite Pokémon
+Hayds 126 is there even a point in trying to pick up a new character anymore. Smash 5 is right around the corner and we don't know what kind of changes to the mechanics we will see. Some characters might be completely changed or even removed from the roster.

wow, this guy is making me want to main the entire cast lol

I gotta say great work on the slow-mo shots!! Looks fantastic!
I've been thinking about picking up Lucario for the past couple hour-I MEAN couple weeks. So this guide should help.
I HEAR DAT JAZZ EVERYWHERE
It's my favorite; InsaneInTheRain
Being a Lucario main since Brawl, can't get a better guide!
Missingnumber Gallade same
you are undrrated on the amount of work that you do
"Not very effective"
"Effective"
"Super Effective"
I see what you did there ;)
I really like Lucarios aura mechanic. Basicly you hitting him makes him hit you harder
I'm early lemme think of a joke
Lucario at 0%
LordBreadDog
I got a better joke: Lucario as a Tournament pick
tsu would like to argue otherwise
Tyler Keaton don’t know how it was two years ago, but lucario is almost top tier
This was an incredibly well done guide. I'm very impressed with the amount of analysis and the quality of the guide. Great job!
the quality of these videos is amazing
thanks
The music choices in this video are top notch. That Cynthia battle remix is actually one I have modded into Smash 4.
I always love how visually appealing your videos are, makes it a lot more interesting to watch than some other guides! And I don't know if you consider requests, but if you do, Art of Luigi would be great
*picks up lucario*
Tecaluca *Then drops him because he's mid-tier*
He's top 15.
I always thought he was mid-tier. But this is kinda old. I main Lucario and I now see his big strengths (but also his big flaws)
Mid tiers are still good
What the fu** are you doing?
thanks so much im a lucario main and looking to get better so thanks . Im gonna listen while practicing combos

@le frogger Why does everyone think we live in igloos up here? It's cold but not *that* cold, eh?
I don't even main any of the characters you made an "art of" video on, but I love watching them, they're so well made!
I've always loved Lucario and loved playing him. This guide may take my gameplay to the next level. Thanks a bunch man!
Lucario has always been that character that I wanted to pick up but did absolutely terrible with whenever I did.
Honestly I'm a zelda main, but lucario has always been my favorite. This video helped me figure out how to actually use him. Thanks
I kinda wish you did all of them this way-- it's nice to have a skit or two every now and again but this format of giving the info is vastly more clean, professional, and enjoyable than some of the others.
Im so glad you showed the use of nair. A lot of people think that aerial is useless but its actually one of his main tools!
Was on for glory 3ds(I was bored) and came across this really good lucario that could have competed in real competitions
It was probably me, I used to be an online warrior with Lucario last year😅
Overtime Beats you have skills to play on the 3ds 😭
I can't believe there were still things I've not yet discovered about Lucario. I main him and thought I knew all the tricks but it seems I've still got more too learn.
This was an awesome vid, and I've learned more off this character now thanks too it
I'm a little late to the party here, but I've been a Lucario main pretty much since Smash 4 came out (didn't play Melee or Brawl). I did it because I saw him as being bad and kind of a meme character (I play the green/purple one, with my name being Dank).

Art of Pit please because nobody ever talks about this character and I have almost no idea how to use him optimally.
Also the ability to select knockback direction with ESpeed is super cool.
I aprove this comment. Pit is not a bad character, at all, but nobody picks him up; however, I don't know how to use him optimally either.
Benjamin gutierrez oriol +FlameUser64 Are you guys in the Pit Discord? Give it a chance, the Pit community would love to help ya

Lucario is my personal favorite on super smash bros and pokemon games
Thank you for the awesome Lucario guide. I did not know about the hitbox direction of Extreme Speed, nor about the Aura Respawn. This definitely taught me a lot about Lucario that I didn't know. Keep up the excellent work.
This is really deep. What a great guide. Thanks.
BEST (late) CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER!
"his SideB can be started just before landing and still grab." He showed that at 14:24
When both are at 0%, down throw to fair fair up air. Down throw puts them at a slightly more horizontal distance, making it easier for early % combos.
KinsanGaming101 DI....
some nice insaneintherain jazz you got going on here
I love Lucario Awesome pokémon and character, i learn play smash with him, my favorite pokemon since 2007. Thanks izaw i learn more about him.
The beginning sax ensemble in the jazz cover of Route 209 gave me chills damn that was awesome
I had just read an article on Day and wanted to pick up Lucario. Great timing, and great video!
Excellent work as always, Izaw. I can't wait to see what you do with really technical characters like Ryu and Shulk.
I love watching your guides, they help me very very much when picking up a new character!
Man, you sure make the best guides of Smash in RUclips. You poikt out every detail and the way you edit is awesome, keep Up the good work!
I dont even play smash 4 i play melee and still i watch every art of video he puts up because they are so damn enjoyable . Keep up the good work man ^^
Neeth gross melee
Kayden 21 ikr
U make every character sound op
Man you have made one of these for every single one of my favorite characters, keep it up because you are an awesome teacher
Yesss, been waiting for this.
For his D-Throw, I sometimes use it as a mix-up for Up-throws if I think my opponent will air-dodge from u-throw combo conditioning. Can lead to an up-smash read at mid-high percentages.
19:40 this is something I did not know or utilize before. Thank you so damn much.
These videos are always so beautifully edited, keep up the good work!
And yes I know I'm like a year and a half late to this video :)

Now in Smash Ultimate just take the low aura effectiveness and boost it a bit and u are practically updated
YESS!! ON THE DAY THAT I CONSIDERED MYSELF A LUCARIO MAIN!!
Loved the intro by the way, keep up the good work.
Izaw personally thank you a lot for this. I really wanted to see someone take lucario into depth
Incredibly well done. Just because I'm super critical and Lucario is my main, I'd like to help out with a couple combos.
Dair puts the opponent into a jab lock situation with Nair, although as you've shown, you can use Aura Sphere.
The difference is you can Dair > Jablock Nair > Dtilt > Grab
This also stops working at mid % and also aura dependant (obviously)
Aside from getting both hits of Nair on Uthrow, at slightly higher % than 0 on characters like Falcon, you can get Uthrow > Nair into reading what your opponent will do. Out of Nair, the opponent can choose an aggressive option or jump.
You can get Uthrow > Nair > Dair > jablock Nair (if they tech, you can get a grab or dash attack) if they choose to do nothing
Uthrow > Nair > fade away Aura Sphere if they choose an aggressive option
And Uthrow > Nair > follow jump Nair or Fair > AS if you can.
Although these are less practical, it's the one I'm best at using lol. Not many people know you can escape Uthrow > Nair very easily.
I'm loving your guides, Izaw. I swear, it makes any character seem top tier!
Yes! Thank God! I have been waiting for an Art of Smash video on Lucario since Brawl, but I just never had the time to ask about it. But now, here it is! Thank you so much. - Mr. Tailson
Thanks Izaw! Your Art of Smash 4 videos have helped me kick ass on For Glory!
Time to destroy FG lucarios >:D good work Izaw, an art of Robin would be nice, if you would consider it
I don't have any Lucario players in my region. This will prepare me for that day. Thanks Izaw!
This is good stuff, thank you for the work put into this.
izaw did my request, i have been waiting for this my entire life
I actually was studying lucario for fun because of his dumb rage, so this is just perfect. Thanks man
seems like I studied him well since I knew all if these things. Great video any way it surely surpasses any other guides on him
How's your banjos high G string?
Casey Campbell 😠
I love Lucario! He's my Favorite Pokemon! Good job lucario! I choose you and I'll support you forever!!!
He's been my main since Brawl...Izaw, you've tought me some combo's I didn't even think were possible!I wanna give you a big thank you for making this, I'm definitely gonna learn more from it, xD
I didn't know you could choose in which direction you want to slide for counter.
If you are familiar with all the songs in this guide you're the real MVP.
Great Video nonetheless You Explained a lot about Lucario, I even learned some new things.
Awesome as always dude. Also, is Lucario your favorite Pokémon like me? If not, who is?
Lucario is my favorite Pokémon, and my main since Brawl
I am Gan Torterra for smash.
-lucario is waifu/husbando tho-
Stitis Channel same
Las Kerfuffle Greninja for le frog footstool combos
Lucario is my favorite Fighting type Pokémon!
Great video and guide! Both are really well done and gave me a really good head start on Lucario since I haven't played since Brawl. I think I'll definitely be a bit more prepared for Ultimate now. :P
Your 'Art of' series of videos are really well made and helped me correct a lot of mistakes I used to make in-game. (I main Roy BTW) So, thanks a lot.
Through training only a Lucario main can become one with the Aura!
Also thanks for the tips✌️
What the HECK your like a MEGA PRO!!! with lucario how do you get that MUCH COMBOS!!!!??? and he’s my FAV!!! Pokémon and I can’t even move my controller that fast!!!!! 😍😍😍 love lucario
I think I'll try this character.
*See's Izaw Lucario video*
*Tries Lucario for 2 hours*
*Goes back to main*
Thank God this channel is a thing it helps me so much and this vid convinced me to main lucario
Really like the background music you use. Amazing video as ever
I wanna main lucario solely because of this video, amazing work and quality! Keep it up Izaw :)
izaw I love these "Art of" series, you put so much noticeable effort in these to ensure the titles look perfect as well as the dramatic frames. if you're considering ideas. Id love to see Pit.
thnx :)!
