The watch in the game is pretty much an exact representation of the Lum-Tec Super Combat B2, and at first i thought the on in the show was a MSTR official tlou watch, but the lack of crownguards indicate that it is a unique piece for the show.
Jenni, it is a wonderful story about a watch from a show. It is cool how it becomes a central point of the plot from a watch enthusiast’s perspective. Thank you very much.
Huge TLOU fan and as a equally big watch fan, needless to say this video made my day to see :) Thank you! and more content like this is an awesome idea.
Awesome video! I'm a fan of both the game and now the show. The first thing that struck me was the attention to the watch. That's the watch geek in us all!
(i haven’t watched the whole video by the time i’m writing this) joel’s watch breaks the SAME time sarah dies. time quite literally stops for him in that moment and it’s why the grief and pain is still so fresh to him even 20 years later. he touches his watch every time he thinks of his first daughter. the watch does not only signify his birthday and a present from his daughter, but it can also be a metaphor for the pause/stop of societal progress due to that same day being outbreak day.
Thanks for the video! I only checked the show out because it was filmed in my hometown and ended up hooked. I was curious about his watch too, so great video.
Played both TLOU 1&2 so many times. Absolutely brilliant storyline which is both heartbreaking and exciting at the same time. The fact they turned a video game in to a TV show goes to show how great the story really was.
What I loved about how they showed how emotionally attached Joel was to that watch in game. At the very end, where Ellie confronts Joel about the Fireflies, Joel talked about finally again having things worth fighting for, Joel reflexively grips the watch with his right hand, running his thumb over the crystal. I'm sure Troy Baker did it very deliberately, but it points back to his daughter , and how much Ellie has come to mean to him. I thought it was a great detail and tells everyone what we already know. Watches can be an emotional touchstone linked to our past. My favorites are for me.
Play the game it is not a virtue signalling Hollywood mess, that is nothing to do with anything to do with all the other b's that they are slipping in , turn this crap off and sell or television
I know a lot of people do movie reviews and watch reviews and even movie watch reviews but I think you're the perfect person to cover this last one, you clearly have the love of movies and watches and I think you'd do a better job at combining the two more than any other watchtuber (Is that a thing? It should be). Looking forward to more of these. Thanks!
I loved this! I forgot how emotional this game was. I really enjoyed the first episode and looking forward to the next. This was missed opportunity for a brand to have a tv spotlight and possibly get some sales out of it.
I've heard that you know that you're a watch collector if you have found yourself staring at your watch dial and realize that you never actually noticed what time it is. I would humbly add that you know that you're a watch collector if you are watching a TV show or movie and the only thing that you can think about is "wait, what's that on the actor's wrist?" 😁
They actually made that watch for the game.. limited edition and I'm sure it's now more expensive than one would want to pay for one on 2nd hand market. There is a Lum-Tec Super Combat B2 that is closest looking to Joel's watch. Otherwise, a completely fictional watch which is more for just the story than for the true watch fan. I thought it was funny the watchmaker said it needed a spring to fix. The only thing that could remotely be a spring in that quartz movement is maybe the battery cell contacts.. sometimes they are spring like in their tension.. but, it's not what a watchmaker would call a "spring". Just should have said it needs a new battery.. which may have been equally funny Joel was either too cheap or lazy to replace a battery.
Absolutely loved this video Jenni! I’m a huge Last of Us fan and in fact it was playing and falling in love with that original game back in 2013 which helped get me back into watches as a 27 year old adult after a few years of not wearing a watch at all in my late teens/early twenties. Given the significance of Joel’s watch in the game I started to wonder what sort of watch it was and if I could get one. I started learning about things called “field watches” and “nato straps” and sub seconds dials 😂 I ended up buying a Timex Expedition which looked kind of like the watch in the game to my novice eyes and I’ve been falling deeper down the watch enthusiast rabbit hole ever since 😂 The current favourite watch in my collection is my Oris Big Crown ProPilot which leans a bit more towards Flieger rather than field watch but it does have a coin edge bezel somewhat reminiscent of the watch in the game so the connection to TLoU is definitely there.
Indeed. Makes me think that the circle at 6 O’clock is something other than a small seconds indicator, also the lugs are thin and resemble a dress with more than any field military watch.
Joel's watch in both games is a Lum Tec Super Combat B2. Literally identical, right down to the numerals and the small seconds. The show however is a random no-name watch made to vaguely resemble the game's watch.
Although I'll probably not watch the show or play the game, I still enjoyed your presentation of the watch and the characters. And yes, I'd be fine with more as you say "crossover" videos. You're fun to listen to no matter the subject!
This was a great video. I forgot about Joel's watch, but this was a great reminder. I didn't expect a Last of Us video from one of the watch channels I follow. Appreciate it!
I watched your videos before and enjoyed them. I love watches obviously :) being subscribed to Teddy Baldassarre, Long Island Watch, Just One More Watch, The Urban Gentry... My favorite games of all time are TLOU and TLOU2 (yes i liked the sequel too) and I have to say you have win me over now. Subscribed! P.S. I hope you get your hands on that Cartier Tank you want
I always call out watches in shows and movies. If I don't know what it is I'll try to look it up, so I appreciate this video. Looking forward to playing this game in March when it comes out on PC.
You can see the detail that Joel's watch broke at that exact moment as far back as the PS3 version. It's just a detail most people will miss because of the emotional weight of the scene.
That case looks like the same one Timex uses on their 40mm quartz watches (Snoopy, etc). It looks like the exact same one, from lugs to crown. The dial, though, is something I've never seen before.
Jenni, I love the idea of using a TV series or movies to introduce those, who previously were not familiar with the history of watches, to the world of horology, while also showing those who are watch enthusiasts the role that their beloved watches play in imbuing characters with distinct and subtle visual style. I think the role of watches in media would be an interesting series of videos for you to produce. The most logical place to start would be to show the evolution of watches through the many decades of 007 movies, as no character on the big or small screen has elevated the prestige of luxury watches more than James Bond.
I was skeptical that you'd be able to stretch the content of this video to be 15 minutes - but I was gladly proven wrong. An enthralling examination on what should have been a simple throwaway prop. I was happy to walk away with a better knowledge of aviation vs. field watches.
Yay. I enjoy it when two of my fan spaces collide: watches and post-apocalyptic games/series. This was posted before the last episode where the metaphor is pointed out directly by Tommy: "...life has stopped for you...". Have you ever looked at other films where the watch is allergory or metaphor for time stopping? The trope where the second hand slows to an almost stop to show where time slows down, or a watch used to mark time until death, or watch as heart.
Did anyone noticed that watchmaker says: "its a spring", in a quartz watch. Although Im aware that, there are tiny springs in a quartz watch that connect movement to the back case, I think that the watch wold still work without one. Hence my nerdy comment that it should be a nice winding mechanical movement, more pleasing to the eye and the show, and also, more valuable and meaningful...
Would love to see you do a review of the Lum-Tec Super Combat B2. Especially since they have re released it recently after the popularity of the Last of Us show.
The odd thing is no one talks about the quartz movement thing. That watch had to has automatic movement because it will be really important in the further episodes 5:42
I’ve been digging through posts trying to find the closest I can get to this watch and i’ve owned all along a 43mm Timex Expedition Chrono in black DLC, i’m going to polish the coating off and expose the bronze case and put it on this green nylon strap, call it the Joel Miller.
MSTR made the watch for the PlayStation store with a seiko quartz movement that is now being sold on eBay for $6000 😂 its a very close representation except in the game the bezel is coin while the one made by MSTR and worn on the show has a smooth bezel. I found an extremely similar one made by Invicta vintage 37071 with a white dial sold on jomashop on sale for $49.99 retail $595 Or just buy an Etsy one for $70 🤣 Other watches that has a similar look are: Fortis classic second automatic $2195 Mont Blanc 1858 small second special edition €3220 Idc big pilot heritage watch 48 €15,200 Patek Philippe calatrava pilot travel time 42,000 Swiss francs Archimede large 45mm pilots watch €940 I’m going to get the invicta cuz I like the white dial better and not because I’m cheap and I don’t feel like spending more than $50 on a prop watch 🤣
Hi, interesting vid as im about to make one of these watches. Id just like to say that Fliegers werent the first watches worn on the wrist. Soldiers wore pocket watches on their wrists first, then converted womens watches, 'wristlet watches' into their own by soldering lugs onto the sides and modifying the dials during world war 1. 'Flieger' is german for pilot and these were worn much later on during world war 2. Also another point is this watch has a smaller seconds dial right? then why has it got a central 'ticking' seconds hand aswell? I think the smaller one is a dummy printed dial. not actually working. Im making this one due to the fact that hardly anyone else has got it right. So thanks for this, it covered all i needed to know about the watch used in the series.
10:36 not sure the sub dial is for seconds like you’d expect it to be as you can clearly see a seconds hand moving round the main dial. Don’t often see a watch with two set of seconds hands outside of chronographs, which clearly this watch isn’t. 13:09 watch the show, or play the game- both Joel’s brother AND Joel served in the military.

A crossover of watches and video games on a popular watch channel? This just keeps getting better and better!

Agreed!
Wow good eye
Plus the three-hand dial with the 'small seconds' sub-dial on the show would imply that the sub-dial for the show is likely a 24 hour display.
To me it looks like a Timex Weekender case with a custom looking dial made for the show. I really liked the show too!
I was thinking the exact same thing
I've played The Last of Us several times and love that HBO is making a show! Great analysis of featuring Joel's watch!

I think the Joel's watch on the HBO series is a Timex weekender, It's the same case shape, I have the chronograph version, great affordable watch

What a good show I enjoyed it. Keep up the good work JE.
Hi, Jenni love your videos. Great work, entertaining content, thank you. What do you think of CW Bel Canto?
It’s a Lüm-Tec Super Combat B2
Would love to see you do a review of the Lum-Tec Super Combat B2. Especially since they have re released it recently after the popularity of the Last of Us show.
Excellent video
You think it’s a single pusher chrono? If that is a small seconds subdial - it clearly has a large central seconds hand.
I will definitely come back after I've seen the episodes!
I think this is a Lüm-Tec Combat B watch
There are 2kind of watch that i found same as Joel's watch.. Is the Lum-tech Super Combat B2 and Invicta Aviator 22528
Very cool content... love it
Jenni I love your watch.
That kind of thing tugs at the heart strings.
Sub seconds but also a seconds hand… only one crown/pusher so it’s can’t be a Chrono. Maybe a date? 24hours?
That was awesome! Danke schön!
Woohoo! Games and watches! ThanksJenni
Top video, once again. Just for info. The original German WWII Fliegers had 55mm diameter.
Looks like a superstore fashion watch to me
TLOU was what started my pocket knife obsession years ago. Thank god I’ve already been bitten by the watch bug and had it scratched before the show 😆
When your doughter fix your watch and at 11:35 in the video it still show the same time.
That was fun!
I have Astor and Banks Fortitude field watch in my collection I have a blk dial with an I've strap and a white dial with a stainless steel bracelet.
I have a Sangin Instruments Overlord and Joel's watch looks almost exactly like it!
I love this crossover. You should start a gaming channel.

Other watches that has a similar look are:
Fortis classic second automatic $2195
Mont Blanc 1858 small second special edition €3220
Idc big pilot heritage watch 48 €15,200
Patek Philippe calatrava pilot travel time 42,000 Swiss francs
Archimede large 45mm pilots watch €940
I’m going to get the invicta cuz I like the white dial better and not because I’m cheap and I don’t feel like spending more than $50 on a prop watch 🤣
She should've bought him a G shock tough solar. It probably would still be working.
the serie make me play the game again. And any Field watch with small seconds is a great option to copy the Joel's watch.
