How did the "checker-board" property ownership issue begin in the first place?
Was it always that way when the Reservation boundaries were first created?
    Or,
Was it originally Navajo Reservation land that they lost control of/sold off?
Interestingly enough, the news story has left out this crucial piece of information.

It was appropriated like all of the lands on this continent - in defiance of law and justice.
The US does not educate its citizens that’s obvious, but the ignorance of the systematic mistreatment of Native Americans even now in 2023 is appalling.

The checkers have an area of 36 acres each. To drill for water or build an access road you need 40 acres of land and it has to be one contiguous piece of land, so it cannot be joined on the corners. This was how the US Bureau of Reclamation, and US Bureau of Land Management could reclaim (seize) land for the government and they could seize twice as much land as they showed on paper. It makes all of the other nongovernment owned lands 100% worthless. The only halfway safe wells on The Navajo Nation are at chapter houses, and those are government run and regulated. USBR did that checkerboard bullshit all over the west.

I don’t understand why the govt talk so much about “illegal immigrants” if we are the “illegal immigrants “. The natives were here first. This is messed up.
