Why does the skin tear after a period of one or two months of tanning?

Do you ever do this without the wool on? Like if you wanted to make a leather purse with the finished leather?

Abigail Morris thank you, what a great question! I have not personally done "hair off tanning". But, the tanning formula I use has instructions on the bottle on how to do so. I believe it involves some bleach. Deer Hunter's & Trapper's Formula.

Thanks so much. Will be butchering for the first time next week and can't wait to try. Does the pelt need to be salted and completely dried B efor putting in tub and starting

You can definitely flash and tan straight from a fresh skin. You can also freeze a fresh skin, then thaw and flesh and tan. Otherwise, I recommend salting and waiting for it to dry first.
